Mingus Plays Piano ( Spontaneous Compositions And Improvisations...1963)

Not your typical Mingus...Nothing groundbreaking

Mingus meets Mingus playing for Mr. Rogers Neighborhood

60 minutes of piano...

My favorite tune...'Compositional Theme Story...Medleys, Anthems, and Folklore' ( link coming )

Whatcha got?

Bird Parker on vinyl for me recently. I just got some excellent vintage Acoustic Research 2ax speakers and combined with my 1963 Fisher 400 tube amplifier Bird's music just sounds extraordinary in my man cave. Love Mingus, Davis, Dizzy, Coltrane, Monk. Great stuff.

He's playing at the State Theater in Ithaca on 2/28. Tried to convince my wife we need to be there but we already have tickets to Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center in Ithaca the night before and we're too old and too poor to go to shows two nights in a row ;)

jazz quintet, so I am playing and/or listening as much as possible each day. Usually I will find multiple versions of a tune I am learning in Spotify to steal some ideas. Recently, this process led me to Chet Baker's album Someday My Prince Will Come. It's a really great album. Also, for me, Mark Elf is always in the rotation (at least once per week - any album).

Nice to see a fellow Fisher tube guy here on BBI. The 400 was always my favorite of their early ‘60s receivers. Hope you have a nice stash of 7868!

Grunings--I have a few in reserve. Wish I had more, but they're hard as hell to find and worth more than gold. That 400 is incredible for jazz and classical. I've had many solid state receivers (mostly 70s and 80s vintage) and still have a Sansui 9090db, but nothing compares to that 400 for its sound stage and just how musical it is.

I enjoy reading this and "hearing" so many of the albums I know well in my head.

Right now for whatever reason I am really missing "Majesty of the Blues" by Wynton Marsalis.

And someone please mention your favorite Oscar Peterson Trio album...
