Welcome to Cooperstown, Derek Jeter! #HOF2020
@Yankees |
He was one vote short of being voted unanimously, apparently. Even still, Derek Jeter is officially a Hall of Famer! Always good to see yet another Yankee in Cooperstown! Congrats to Jeter.
(There is a thread asking a question about Jeter from early today, but not a thread since it's official that he is a HOF'er. Thought this deserves its own thread.
Jeter in Cooperstown - (

Sucks there was one in the bunch who didn't vote for him but I'm ok with Mo being the only unanimous HOFer for now. He set an incredibly high bar and that bar used to be for 1st ballot guys. Since Mo broke that unanimous barrier the bar has been raised.
I think maybe the one vote against was a nod to Mo but until the writer gives their reason if at all, it's just me speculating on their reason.

I still think the BBWAA should investigate this reporter. If 396 of 397 voters see he is worthy, then whomever should be questioned and asked his reasoning. If the answer that is the Babe, Aaron, Seaver and Cobb weren't unanimous the voting privilege should be revoked.
There will always be questions on some players. But this is just non-sense.
Trying to think who should flirt with unanimous? Albert Pujols?
I’ll be upset if it’s fucking David Ortiz.

I'm less upset at this than the guy who didn't vote for Matsui as Roy because he said he wasn't a rookie by playing pro ball in Japan. That was absurd as MLB had set the standard he was a rookie by making him eligible, and that voter made up his own rules.
I think if this guy says he voted no because he didn't feel Jeter was at the same level as Mo, I can accept that. If it was just to keep him from being unanimous, that's bullshit and the guy should lose his voting credentials going forward.
If it’s true, why the fuck does ANYONE from a trash site like Barstool have a goddamn BBWAA credential?
Fucking hell.

If David ‘Arias’ Ortiz ever gets elected to the HOF, it’ll be a fucking sham. He’s not a HOF player at all.

Should be unanimous. Probably a Red Sox writer who kept it from being so.

Figures....
That is White Sox Dave and that is a fake ballot.
Trolling - ( New Window )
Not every Hall of Fame player is a 90% candidate. Almost no one is a 95% candidate, let alone 100%. But just because it was never done before is not a good enough reason to not do it now. With that mentality, I can easily argue that Mo should not have been unanimous - Let's talk about Tom Seaver, Greg Maddux, Bob Gibson. They were all deserving of 100% and as starting pitchers they more important than relievers. We say Mo is the best relief pitcher/closer of all time and he was, but.... 45/50 years ago relief was what you did when you couldn't start. Innings eaters. The game has changed. But in the end, top starters still garner almost twice as much salary as the best closers and that tells you which position is more valuable.
So in the end, if there is not a good reason to not vote for a player, then you must vote for him. The BBWAA votes as individuals not as a group exercise. If this writer does not think Jeter is a Hall of Fame player, his judgement needs to be called into question and his voting rights need to be rescinded. I'm not for group think, but I am looking for responsible voting.

Mike Trout if he continues as he has performed to date.

Ortiz - steroid speculation
Pujlos- fell off after cards. Steroid speculation
Trout - I can see some loser knocking him for not winning a WS
Altuve - pre buzzer possibly
The knock on him will be that the Mariners never made the playoffs (I think his only playoff appearance was with the Yankees).
His stats are off the charts great and his MVP's will carry a lot of weight no matter what his playoff or lack of appearances are .

The lack of playoffs definitely hurts as does his injury history. But as of now he has also only played 8 or 9 seasons, IIRC. Have to see what happens in the next 5 or 6 seasons - does he continue play awesome through age 34-36? Do injuries limit his playing time significantly?
Trout and Pujols are the best chances in the future, but ...BBWAA seems to find excuses, although as of now I don't see either as 100%.

Not only will he likely get in - and just wait for the push the year he's eligible, but I'd put money on the guy who left Jeter off the ballot sending in several for Big Papi!!
What a lot of people do not see is that outside of NY(and BBI) Ortiz is a beloved figure, like it or not. I think everyone accepts he is fringey on PEDs but tends to dismiss it to a point.
He will not be unanimous because of being a DH mainly, the hints of steroid use(yes even confirmed) and a sketchy training program in the DR. Just as it hindered Piazza, the steroid/HGH rumors will detract from the old school guys who will not vote for Clemens and Bonds.
Does he get in 1st ballot, yes. Is he a 100% candidate - no.
Ortiz Baseball Reference - ( New Window )
It is shameful that he would escape the same treatment that McGwire, Bonds, Clemens, Sosa and A-Rod have endured.

Ortiz: Will get in at some point. Might not be first ballot. No chance of unanimous. Some people won't vote for him because they don't think he deserved 100 percent Some won't vote for him because they don't think he deserves first ballot. Some people may not vote for him ever because of the steroid stuff.
Pujlos: Will probably get in at some point. Suspected of steroid use, but short of any failed tests, only a matter of time.
Trout: First ballot, no doubt.
Altuve: A lot depends on how he does going forward. If he turns into a shell of himself, then he very well could be on the outside looking in.

Off the top,of my head is the one guy I think has a great shot at being unanimous.

Injury history? What are you talking about? He had one season where he missed 40 games or so. Still finished top 5 in MVP voting every season possible. The guy could retire tomorrow and will walk into the Hall of Fame.

Of course, but they were basically all caught red handed. While Ortiz was one of those rumored supposedly in the commissioners report as having failed a test, was it ever really made public and it seems he never failed a test again. We all know he did it. It does not seem fair, I agree. Now Piazza never did fail a test and he was treated unfairly on suspicion of use. You would think Ortiz would get the same treatment but he won't because of the Red Sox return to World Series victory after 80 years or whatever it was.
But I return to my point that he is loved outside of NY...

should carry the stigma that the main steroid users have, He transformed from a skinny kid in Minnesota with a different last name into a burly slugger, larger than Sosa.

That was actually in the 'Mitchell Report' in the early
part of the 2000's. It was a couple years before drug testing was actually implemented.
Whether people like it or not, Ortiz will get in,
especially after Edgar Martinez just got in.

Thanks - yeah the Mitchell Report - only Yankees got named.
Ortiz deserves to get in, like it or not. His number are great and with all the WS the Sox won when he was there in which he played a huge roll.
Why fret over stuff we have no control over even if it galls you.

It's too bad he got hosed though. my guess is somebody
gave the vote to Walker or possibly even a Schilling to bolster their chances.
Who knows? I doubt he comes forward with that info.
