Under the radar signing for the Center spot: Joe Thuney

Pheonix Orion : 1/21/2020 7:06 pm
Apparently can play all 5 spots on the OL. Is young and continues to get better. Learned under Scarnechia.

A Patriot guy so Judge will be quite familiar with him.

#16 on PFFs FA list:

16. G JOE THUNEY
It’s been a story of continuous improvement for Thuney since entering the league in 2016, and he finished the 2019 regular season with the No. 5 overall grade among guards (77.4). Thuney has had his best year in pass protection, allowing just 16 pressures on 693 attempts, good for the third-highest pass-blocking grade in the league (87.4). A converted college offensive tackle, Thuney struggled against more powerful players early in his career, but he’s developed nicely into one of the best all-around guards in the league.

Love the versatility and NYG needs a vet presence on the OL to balance some of the youth, assuming an upgrade of both tackle spots and OC.

The pickings are somewhat thin at OT in FA and almost none for LT. With Castonzo either retiring or resigning with Colts. Conklin may be expensive and isn't a phenomenal pass blocker but is a good run blocker & decent overall.

Becton/Willis/Wirfs- Hernendez- Thuney- Zietler- Gates/Vet RT

Or option 2: maybe we go Gates at OC as he has position versatlity too.

Gates has to be a backup....

there are much better players that we can acquire and blend into a solid OL
Becton LT. Cesar Ruiz Center. Conklin RT

That’s my vote
But if Joe Thuney can play center I’d take him too and save the Center draft pick
Gates as swing tackle
Where’s Solder in your lineup?

He’s most likely staying and will be one of the tackles IMO. He also played for Scarnecchia?!

With a potential rookie LT, I want my signal caller to be a vet.

Solder can still be a salary cap casualty even with a 12 million dead cap hit

Solder wasn't just bad last year he was getting Jones decked and killing drives with flat out whiffs.

The most he can be is a few game stop gap while a rookie gets ready and only on a pay cut which he publicly stated he would take to stay here.
You've got to think Judge is in the perfect position

to decide whether Solder is injured, washed up, needs a better system, better designed plays, or different guys around him.

Solder is a high character guy who said he is willing to take a pay cut to stay. His cap savings is 6.5 if cut. If he takes a cut of that amount or more it makes it much easier to keep him.

He can provide insurance while a rookie gets up to speed.
One thing I noticed about Solder
Since1965 : 1/21/2020 10:47 pm : link
was that he likes to push his guy to his left even though the guy is penetrating. But what made that so ineffective at times was that the center was frequently pushed backwards. As the pocket collapsed and Jones was trying to duck the rush, Solder's guy would be able to slip off him and get to Jones. Maybe with a better center, Solder would also improve?
DG said priority #1 was to fix the OL

We have a young QB we spent the #6 overall pick on and an RB we spent a #2 pick overall on.

Its year 3 and the OL is still not fixed. I would be very, very surprised if we don't sign at least one quality FA OL and one very high draft pick (either round 1 or round 2).

Thuney has the Judge connection and can play RT and possibly OC. According to Jeremiah you have 2 possible really top shelf LTs in Becton and Wills.(Wirfs he thinks will be a guard and he said Thomas needs some work).

Rebuilding the OL is key and finding a starting OC in free agency is easier than LT. I hope Becton is there at #4 because I think he shoots up the charts and could go to #3 Detroit.
I would think they go 1 OL in the draft and 1 in FA.

Conklin would be a nice get. I've been waitng 4 years to see him in blue.

This is what I have noticed a lot too. I havent watched Solder on the Pats but maybe that was his technique to ride a guy deep out of the play and now with Pio getting pushed back so much its creating pressure/sacks that would normally ride him out. It wont clean it all up but a better C will help everyone.

Detroit has a decent starting LT I believe. And their D is severely lacking with a defensive head coach. Also the spectre of trading down for a kings ransom may be quite appealing to them
