Nick Gates deserves a starting spot next year @ RT or C

We can only hope he upgrades RT. I do hope we resign Remmers too though as he has versatility.

He like Joe Thuney both seem to be those Richie Seubert guys who can play multiple spots. Really strong awareness for blocking schemes and practiced Center in preseason for us under Shurmy.

I'd love Thuney and a 1st round LT : Becton or Wills . Then have Gates and Thuney be evaluated for RT and C. Figure out which guy is better where and play him there. Each guy has played both spots and Judge is familiar with Thuney.

I'd be happy if he's a truly versatile, quality backup who can fill in at multiple positions. If they get more than that out of him, it's certainly gravy.

Hell, the Giants are WAY overdue to get lucky on an UFA offensive lineman. Gates turning into a quality starter would be hitting the jackpot, similar to drafting David Diehl in the 5th round as a guard, and him becoming a quality, starting OLT. You get that kind of luck, what? Every 10-15 years? I don't know if Gates is that, but as I said, the Giants are overdue for some OL good luck. Even the law of averages says not all of these guys they bring in can suck. Eventually one of them has to pan out. Maybe it's Gates.

Thunney is my #1 UFA. He immediately upgrades. But imagine if Gates turns out to be a solid RT???

If we have to live with Solder at LT another year, well, you can't necessarily fix it all in one off-season.

However, I am hoping we draft M. Becton for LT and he is ready for day 1 action. Mauler for Barkley.

Centers are a special breed. You can't just take a guard or tackle and make him a center. That's what they tried with Halapio, much to BBI's unhappiness. And you certainly can't take Zeitler, in the second half of his career, and make him a solid center. Name someone who has done that.

This isn't Madden. You don't just take an OL and move them for the sake of it. And they often fail when that happens. Tackles have compared the left and right sides as basically wiping your ass with different hands. The footwork is different. You can't just take a RT and tell the guy to go play center. Those guys don't know how to call out blocking assignments, etc. It's basically a good way to get a repeat of Halapio.

His presence in no way alters the fact they need to add two high level assets to the unit going into next season.

You guys are nuts, one guy wants Gates at center with "Big George" at RT. Another one wants Zietler at center and Gates at RT. The majority of comments in this thread come off as people thinking the NFL is like madden and you just put any OL at any position, regardless of talent level or experience and hope for the best. Amazing.

Most of the good LTs out there started on the right and then shifted over.

I think expecting to draft a LT in round 1 who isn’t a generational talent and having him start is way optimistic. More likely, we need to get better play out of Solder which i hope happens w some better coaching.

Keep Gates and George Asafo-Adjei developing as back-ups....unless they beat out the starters..

But they still need overall improvements with both tackles and a center.

That position needs a major upgrade and he would solidify the middle next to Zietler and Hernandez. Solder is gonna be a starter at one of the OT spots next year. Gates should get an opportunity to compete for a spot and an OT should be drafted by the end of day 2 to add to the mix. If Big George can make it back to camp all the better for depth.

With that pre-snap bounce that KZ does, if he were the C he’d get us a false start almost every play. No thanks.

Zeitler stays at RG, you don't move a very good RG to C. That's a significant decrease in value and talent usage.

They need an upgrade at C and RT, and the latter may come from this draft, hopefully with a LT upside to eventually replace Solder.

Thank you for sharing. I was impressed in both games with Gates. What is even more impressive, it was at 2 different spots on the line. However, I do not want him at C. I want him at RG or RT. He has great instincts there. Sure, he may have them at C as well, but we will not know until we see it.

We need a massive upgrade at C and RT. He will fill one of them, that is for sure. That is a pleasant find by DG and his team of scouts.

Gates deserves a roster spot but he has to earn a starting position. He looked better at guard than tackle but he obviously won't start there because the Giants are set at both spots. Gates will likely provide solid depth next season.

McGovern is an option potentially but I like Thuney better for upside and Judge will know his game quite well.
