NFT: BA's top 100 prospects - Yankee-themed

Dunedin81 : 1/22/2020 12:47 pm
They list Jasson Dominguez (38), Clarke Schmidt (62), and Deivi Garcia (65). Not a bad showing for NYY. We haven't had a good prospect-themed discussion in awhile so fire away.

It's nice to see the Braves still represented

Despite all the recent promotions.
CF Christian Pache #12
CF Drew Waters #36
P Ian Anderson #44
P Kyle Wright #64

I'm still amazed by Jasson Dominguez
Giantsfan79 : 1/22/2020 12:50 pm : link
he's 16 and barely played any organized ball and he's already the 38th best prospect in the game. But the amazing thing is everything I read about him continues to be positive, I've never seen scouting reports read like his.

Still I wonder if the expectations aren't so high that we're setting him up to crash.
2 years ago Florial
arniefez : 1/22/2020 12:56 pm : link
was the flavor of the year. Now it's Dominguez and Florial is off the radar. A good rule is wait until they get to AA before you get to excited. Hopefully Dominguez stays healthy, Florial didn't and we'll see what he is in about 3 years.

He's 16?! Look at the size of this kid at age 16. That's him in the middle if you didn't know.

A few years ago the great Kevin Maitan was a top 50 prospect despite not playing in the US at the time. I am not suggesting that Dominguez will disappoint like Maitan I'm just pointing out how these scouting services love to hype up the young international prospect.
Of the J2 kids with comparable hype...
Dunedin81 : 1/22/2020 1:27 pm : link
we've seen Vlad, Maitan, Wander Franco, and Eloy/Gleyber (same year) in that ballpark. That's a pretty solid success rate. Could he bust? Absolutely. But the folks who have seen him seem to think that's at least less likely.

Muller, Davidson and Langeliers are knocking on the door, too.
I'm bumping this...
Dunedin81 : 1/24/2020 8:37 am : link
because we're three weeks away from P&C.
Clarke Schmidt's rise has been impressive...
Dunedin81 : 1/24/2020 8:53 am : link
and while Deivi may have better swing and miss stuff, Schmidt is a durable guy with better command. His floor is much higher than Garcia or many of the other high-upside arms in the system, but his ceiling is high too.

Agree on Schmidt

Too easy to fall in love with potential. Schmidt seems solid. Be interested in watching the upgraded coaching approach of the Yankees and which prospects take a leap forward
Dominguez

In that picture above, I think he looks closer to 30 years old then 15.
Here are 3 Yankee under the radar prospects
JPinstripes : 1/24/2020 1:59 pm : link
that I am very high on.

1. Anthony Gomez C. 18-year-old backstop from Venezuela (600k signing) that played in the GCL a little last year. The kid has good size, cat-quick like reflexes behind the plate, a great arm and a power bat. I think he starts at Pulaski this year - look out.

2. Nick Nelson SP. 24-year-old former 4th round pick in 2016. Nelson has swing and miss stuff and throws 3 pitches above average. The kid is a bulldog, described as a very hard worker by teamates and coaches. Garcia and King will get the attention as top AAA starters to watch this year but Nelson just may wind up being more effective than both of them. The kid has top of the roatation stuff sitting mid 90s with his FB topping at at 98, but he has to refine his control this year.

3. T.J. Sikkema SP. 21 year old former 2019 CBA selection (38th overall). TJ only had 4 staarts for SI last year in short season and he was bassically unhittable in his outings. He is a 3 pitch run and sink left hander that saw an uptick in his FB sitting 93-94 at SI and has above average secondary offerings and excellent command. He should start the season at Pulaski and rise quickly.

Agree on all three...
Dunedin81 : 1/24/2020 2:14 pm : link
Sikkema will probably start at Charleston or Tampa though. He could move quickly, he has a lot of polish to his game.
Saw Deivi Garcia
Pete in MD : 1/24/2020 2:35 pm : link
in-person at a Bowie BaySox/Trenton Thunder game last year. He's looks tiny on the mound. Pitchers that small usually don't succeed in the majors. He looks Pedro and Stroman look huge.

Yeah he's a very slight guy, but he generates that torque. Loaisiga is a slight guy too, but to date Garcia hasn't had his durability issues.
Ron Guidry in 1977

was pretty thin. A few inches taller probably about the same weight though.
