NFT: Parasite (Korean movie nominated for best picture)

cjac : 1/22/2020 4:22 pm
Since Beez started a 1917 thread i thought this deserved one too.

This past weekend i saw this, 1917 and Once upon a time in Hollywood

of the the 3, i liked Parasite the best. and i liked it way way better than that steaming pile of crap The Irishman.

discuss
Unbelievable film.
Jon in NYC : 1/22/2020 4:24 pm : link
The best movie I saw this year. 2nd is probably Jojo Rabbit.
i didnt see Jojo Rabbit
cjac : 1/22/2020 4:25 pm : link
yet. looking forward to that one

looks like a Wes Anderson movie
Wait.
Pete in 'Vliet : 1/22/2020 4:34 pm : link
Are we now allowed to admit The Irishman kind of sucked?
I kept waiting for The Irishman
Beezer : 1/22/2020 4:36 pm : link
to be something ... and it just never got there for me. This, after a couple friends had told me how amazing it was. I had to stop watching after 90 minutes or so, I was so bored. Came back to it maybe a week later, and ... blah.
Haven't seen Parasite or 1917 yet.
Motley Two : 1/22/2020 4:39 pm : link
I've seen just about everything else this year, so those are the last 2 chances to dethrone 'The Lighthouse' for my favorite of the year.

Might try to watch Parasite tonight, if not I'll see it sometime before this Sunday. 1917 I wanna try to catch in the theater soon.
agree, Jon
ColHowPepper : 1/22/2020 4:40 pm : link
and it's aching, taxing to sit through yet humorous as hell ('they all have the same smell'; hiding 'in plain sight' under the coffee table), but also haunting, the basement dwellers, the interdependence of privilege/wealth and those who cling to survival on their beneficence (or forced to cling to existence in their storm cellars)
the Irishman
UConn4523 : 1/22/2020 4:40 pm : link
is trashed so much that its now an underrated movie, IMO.

i really liked how they kept showing the view from the window of the poor family vs the view from the window of the wealthy family.
The Deniro stomp looked all kinds of fucky
Motley Two : 1/22/2020 4:45 pm : link
but I still liked the Irishman. I think some of the best parts were very subtle by design.
I liked it a lot
ron mexico : 1/22/2020 4:45 pm : link
Very clever.
I didn't think The Irishman was awful.
Beezer : 1/22/2020 4:46 pm : link
Just that given the cast and the guy making the film? It felt like it was on cruise control, and with all the aforementioned? That just didn't get it done.

I thought Parasite was good

but overrated since ppl kept telling me how good it was. I liked Irishman a lot but i dont think it's going to win.

Best part of the movie. Amazing scene that really sticks with you.
Wonderfully twisted storytelling
BlueLou'sBack : 1/22/2020 5:15 pm : link
with acting to match. Not a "great" movie IMO, but extremely imaginative and wickedly funny and fantastically cast and directed.

I recommended it very highly on one of our movie threads 2-3 weeks ago.

Still got 1917 on top of the "to watch" list.
Parasite
giantfan2000 : 1/22/2020 5:22 pm : link
one of the best movies I have seen in the past few years.

amazing direction , acting ..

should win Oscar for best picture but it won't

Did anyone see uncut gems? If so, did you think it and/or AS got robbed? I haven't seen it, but it was getting a lot of hype.
If I can sneak in a recommendation:
BlueLou'sBack : 1/22/2020 5:24 pm : link
My Polish Honeymoon; just saw it at the Lincoln Center's Jewish Film Festival and it was a delightful, wise comedy that touch on a number of very sensitive and delicate areas, particularly the neuroses of the children/grandchildren of Holocaust survivors in Europe.

Very funny as well and a terrific directorial debut by French Filmaker …lise Otzinger. It will get a limited engagement in NYC following it's fine success and I imagine great reviews at the Festival.

Really fast paced for a film that, Sacre Bleu!, features dialogue.
My Polish Honeymoon - ( New Window )
Finally

Others who hate the Irishman. What a pile of crap.
Parasite was good, but I don't get the hype
jcp56 : 1/22/2020 6:47 pm : link
Liked the first half when the poor family got in, one-by-one, serving the rich family. The second half was original for sure, but a bit too contrived for me.

If you like Korean movies, two on Amazon Prime that I can recommend are Burning and Handmaiden. Burning was a simple story, with a slow plot reveal, but very well done. The Handmaiden was a bit slow to start, but then had a few wicked plot twists that were great (and much less contrived than Parasite). It also had pretty explicit lesbian scenes (NTTAWWT), so not a family movie by any means.

I did and yes it got robbed. As did Adam Sandler.

As to Parasite - definitely one of the best movies Iíve seen of the past 10 years. Such a fantastic story & rich with symbolism. Only other one that is in the same league in recent years is Shape of Water.

Parasite is an incredible film, wife and I watched it last week and we both sort of sat there after it was over somewhat shocked/elated/amazed. It was unlike anything we had seen in quite some time. Not sure it will win best picture, but it is certainly deserving. Only thing left for us is 1917...can't wait to see that one
this was such a good year for
ryanmkeane : 1/23/2020 8:06 am : link
movies, there really are 7-8 movies that any other year would probably win best picture. Lots of great ones this year...

Regarding Uncut Gems, i loved it, but i've talked to a lot of people that were just "eh" on it...Safdie brothers style is not for everyone, so I think that plays into the fact that it didn't get nominated. Sandler absolutely deserved a best acting nom though

The Irishman..
FatMan in Charlotte : 1/23/2020 8:11 am : link
had so much promise. It could have been a classic gang film, but you never really got to know the characters, and you had 3.5 hours to do it!

You never understand the daughter. You never get more of a surface look at Harvey Keitel. You don't really get to know the wives. Even Deniro - you don't really know why he did what he did through his life. It was just one long piece about Mob life that seemed to look at the mundane ways.

It would be like if the Sopranos took 45 minutes to show the guys eating subs at the deli.
Wow, how have I never heard of JoJo Rabbit?
Brown Recluse : 1/23/2020 8:18 am : link
I just watched the trailer. Looks awesome.
My favorite..
FatMan in Charlotte : 1/23/2020 8:23 am : link
films of the year are JoJo Rabbit and 1917. Hard to give one a nod because they are completely different. I actually had no idea what JoJo Rabbit was about or the hype behind it when I saw it.

Will probably watch Parasite next week.
Parasite was good but to me, far from great
ij_reilly : 1/23/2020 9:29 am : link
I thought it was worth seeing, but I found all of the characters to be unlikable human beings. I wouldn't want to know any of them.

Made the movie a bit of a tough watch for me.

Honestly, I was totally surprised by the Best Picture nomination.

1917 is a far superior film in all ways. Script, acting, sets, cinematography, you name it. It dwarfs Parasite. Seriously.

The wife in the rich couple wasn't really "unlikable". A helicopter parent maybe. Even the 17 year old, what was so bad? Her interest in the tutor?

Festina Lente : 1/28/2020 7:10 pm : link
I know many here are huge fans but I just don't see it. It was a decent movie and I appreciate the direction (which was very good) but the movie itself just wasn't that enthralling nor were the characters particular memorable to me. It was just above average to my eyes.

Totally agree. I nearly fell asleep and I fought hard to stay through it all. It was just so slowwwwwwww and tedious. Torture....

I know the cinematography and sound were great....
Parasite was a good imaginative
BlueLou'sBack : 1/28/2020 10:33 pm : link
well directed film and I can't fathom folks thinking it was too slow moving. I guess you can't stand anything made before 2000 or films like 2001 a Space Oddessey, Do-Des-Ka-Den, or Ikiru, or even The Seven Samurai?

I'm mentioning Kurosawa films in particular because I don't think anything he made was fast paced.

Modern films in the fast paced category tend to bore the shit out if me.

Perhaps that's why Unforgiven was one of my favorite movies of the past 30 years.
Unforgiven was a great movie.
Del Shofner : 1/28/2020 10:46 pm : link

I'm guessing this is why things like Miracle Whip still stay on the shelves. Different tastes. I guess I could see people not liking 1917 for certain reasons, being slow seems like a tough one to comprehend.

Yeah, I know I am in the clear minority on this one seeing it score 8.5 on IMDB. Trust me, I didnít want to walk out regretting That I chose this Movie instead of Knives Out. Maybe I was expecting something closer to Saving Private Ryan...I donít know. I think I will watch Paths of Glory tonight starring Kirk Douglas, another classic oldie tonight. This is a WWI movie that really pleased me.

Fwiw, The other war movie I saw recently, I loved MUCH MUCH more...MIDWAY. And that was a remake of a great classic. Yet, I noticed this was only moderately received....yet I absolutely loved every minute and canít wait to watch it again.
Academy Award Talk
5BowlsSoon : 2/4/2020 8:10 am : link
Okay, the Mrs and I saw PARASITE last night, so now I have seen 5 of the 7 and wonít see the other two until it comes out on Netflix, so I now can tell you which movie was my favorite. Up until yesterday, it was pretty close. But now, I have a clear winner.......drum roll please.....on an IMDB scale of 1-10, the following....

1. Parasite....9.5
2. Ford v Ferrari....8
3. Irishman......7.5
4. Once Upon a Time......7
5. 1917.........6. (I know, I know, this is unpopular here)

So, as you can see PARASITE, is my clear favorite....but could a foreign film win the Academy? I donít think it has ever been done before. We shall see.

Oops, I forgot The Joker
5BowlsSoon : 2/4/2020 8:35 am : link
The Joker.........7
i have to watch
cjac : 2/4/2020 8:47 am : link
that Ford vs Ferrari

I tried to watch Jojo Rabbit this past weekend but its not available to rent yet.

I did watch the lighthouse which was really really great

Parasite is my fav too
Joker close second, thought it was great

1917 was ok

Irishman was total crap, cant state that enough....
I forgot about
cjac : 2/4/2020 8:50 am : link
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

that rounds out my top 3

1. Parasite
2. Joker
3. Once Upon a Time
4. 1917

I didnt see FvF, Jojo or Little Women, i bailed on Marriage Story half way through and Irishman sucked
Have seen them all and my list is:
PatersonPlank : 2/4/2020 12:08 pm : link
1917
Ford vs Ferrari
Parasite
Joker
Once Upon a time

I like Parasite, it was different and interesting, but I didn't think it was a great movie personally. I found The Joker somewhat depressing, and I thought Once Upon a Time was a nothing for me. The top two I thought were very good.

but it was low on the Tarantino totem pole for me. Seemed as much about DiCaprio an Pitt being in a film together as anything else. Don't get me wrong, it was a fun watch overall, but award-winning? Not at all.

Not even in the same galaxy of Inglorious Basterds in my opinion (which happens to be my favorite of his) however it was good overall. Dragged some in the middle which some of his movies tend to do but was worth it for the payoff at the end.
