Seems like every Giants beat writer is pushing McCourty to the Giants. Am I the only one that doesn't want to see this happen?
McCourty is a good player, but he'll be turning 33 before the start of the season. To me, he doesn't exactly fit with what we're trying to build here. Signing older FAs as we're re-building just doesn't make any sense.
If we're going to splurge on a FS, much better to do it with Jimmie Ward, Justin Simmons, Anthony Harris, etc.
Even James Bettcher signed Kareem Martin, Josh Mauro, Olsen Pierre, Bethea, Buchanon, Golden, etc.
It is just common practice to bring along a few guys who have familiarity and a track record of success in the system and usually they are more likely to be older role players who the previous team doesn't mind letting go. That doesn't mean they can't end up having a positive impact.
What?

Yep. Those were all low-cost signings though. McCourty will not come cheap. I wouldn't mind adding Logan Ryan and Kyle Van Noy on reasonable deals.

I would add - how did the majority of those signings work out for the Giants? The defense has been an unmitigated disaster the past three years.
If the price / terms are right, I'm open to the idea.
They aren't 1 or the other. You can do both. They have 10 or 11 draft picks I think, signing McCourtney (or any veteran) won't change that. There are 53 roster spots and if you believe Judge the best guys are going to play.
There are 19 guys drafted in 16/17/18/19 still on the roster (15 by this regime). Probably a few more UDFA/street FA's that will stick like Gates/Kaden Smith.
There are probably 5-10 current roster veterans (Zeitler, Tate, Solder, Michael Thomas, LW, etc) that will stick.
So even if we aggressively project 30/53 active roster players are already here plus another 10 rookies still to come, there are still another ~10 slots available to fill with FA being the likely place to find them.

Nothing about James Bettcher's D the past 2 years should impact the judgement of the new staff. The defense was an unmitigated disaster and that's why he got fired.
Actually, the opposite. He ran slow at the combine, high 4.6s.
He led the nation in interceptions his last year at Boise.
The key is knowing if the guy will age well.
I thought I heard that Thompson was playing pretty well wherever he is now.
They would love to have Thompson right now. Playing better than anyone they have.
Agree all around Jay. Ryan would be the perfect slot CB/centerfielder to fit with Beal/Baker/Ballentine on the outside and Peppers/Love at safety. He has a ball hawking skill set that's currently lacking. In the past 2 years at TEN he has:
8.5 sacks
13 QB hits
26 passes defensed
4 FF
4 INT
That's a lot of big play production in 30 starts.
I’m down with a 1-2 year deal as FS and mentor to Love, who could hopefully keep developing. I get the aversion to another vet free agent safety north of 30, but it think McCourty would be much better than Bethea. IMO
Darian Thompson was sick at the combine and was absolutely dreadful... meanwhile Justin Simmons was a height, weight, speed freak of a safety and absolutely destroyed the combine... so really you couldnt have gotten it more wrong.
