NFL's Greatest Moment - Final Four (fan vote)

Bramton1 : 1/23/2020 11:49 am
As part of the NFL 100 campaign, the league is having a fan vote for the greatest moment in league history.

The top four are set. In no particular order, the Helmet Catch, the Immaculate Reception, the Dolphins' perfect season, or The Catch.

Vote as many times as you can. I just voted 20-30 times.

That fact that Malcolm Butler

was not automatically put into the final four is a absolute crime, IMHO.
I don't know how you can't vote

for the Helmet Catch of those 4
The Dolphins

had a great accomplishment but it's not really one moment. Tyree gets the nod because it happened in a Super Bowl. Also, there is a large amount of luck with the Immaculate Reception. If the intended receiver makes the catch or if the ball deflects a little differently, the game is over and Pittsburgh loses.

maybe so, but it will definitely win "all time dumbest play call" by acclamation LOL
Pat Summerall's FG in the snow to beat the Browns

in 1958 would've been my vote if it were there. It was equal in significance to any of those other events, possibly even more so when you consider the explosion of pro football's popularity after the 1958 NFLCG.

Nice to see that the Alan Ameche touchdown

that ended the so-called "greatest game ever played" (1958 NFL championship Bal. Colts def. NYG for you young 'uns) or anything else from that contest, didn't make the cut.

not on the list.
"The Catch"

I still don't get what is so great about jumping up and catching a ball in the end zone, beside it was a playoff game. I never thought it was anything spectacular.

My ratings:
1.) Tyree
2.) Immaculate Reception
3.) Dolphins perfect season (not really amount, more an accomplishment)
4.) The Catch
I've never understood

The Catch being labeled as some miraculous play. Plays just like it are made several, if not dozens, of times in a season. A tall receiver runs across the back of the end zone as his QB scrambles and catches a high pass.

Sure, it was in the playoffs at a critical moment, but it isn't that unusual of a play. Was The Catch any more amazing than Cunningham escaping Banks' tackle to throw a TD pass? Or even the play by DeShaun Watson bouncing off two tacklers against the Bills to complete a pass to set up the tying field goal.
I agree about "The Catch."

Maybe because Dwight Clark looks so lumbering and un-athletic, everyone was surprised he could jump that high?
I agree the Dolphins season was not a moment but an accumulation

On the Tyree catch it was one play including Eli avoiding the sack enabling him to throw the ball to Tyree

I'll say this:

For 49er fans, the Alex Smith throw to Vernon Davis was an insane play. Pretty routine for some of the top QBs possibly in a regular game, but that decisiveness with that little time left and the moment, huge.

Yeah, if I was a bit older than 2 years old, The Catch would have been ridiculous.

If it had been Simms to Bavaro, it'd be crystal clear.

All about context. I guess the only thing that could have made it more bulletproof was it being on 4th down instead of 3rd.

Also, many haters like to allege Montana was throwing it away (as if that means anything) but when has any QB ever thrown it away that resulted in a TD catch, let alone one that was nearly perfectly placed?

Why wasn’t the tackle by Mike Jones of Kevin Dyson

On the very last play of SB XXXIV there? To me that was one of the most exciting sequences I’ve ever seen.

Or is only offense exciting ?

Also if there was replay back then it would've been interesting to see if the pass was tipped by Frenchie Fuqua or the Raider defender.

The rule at the time was an offensive player couldn't catch a tipped/deflected pass directly from another offensive player. It would've had to be tipped by the defender which is what the call on the field was.

I know a lot of Raider fans at the time swore it was tipped by Fuqua and probably still feel that way.

Even so, I have it at #2 behind the Tyree helmet catch, with Miami #3, and the head scratching as to why it's rated so high "Catch" at #4.
