2008 NY Giants Football

We so forget how dominant we were that season prior to the infamous bullet to the leg episode which changed the trajectory of this franchise a bit. I have basically rewatched most of that season and just reveled in the dominance of our O Line and run game and what could have been. It demonstrates the advent challenges in 09 and 10 which lead to the MVP Eli year in '11 when he had to carry the team on his arm.

My 2 favorite games from that year were the Ravens and the Steelers games. As dominant a football team as we have had in almost 30 years.
I Have No Doubt Giants Would Have Repeated

as champs had not Plaxico did what he did. We were the best team in football that year.
That 2008 team was one of the best Giants teams ever

up until the Plax incident.

We beat both SB teams that year on the road.

11-1 at one point. Destroying teams and knocking out QBs weekly. And then stupid Plax had to go out and do what he did

Grrrr.
I think the Plax thing is used as too much of an excuse

that defense was gassed by the end of the year. Tuck and Kiwanuka had to play all the time, versus the rotation with Strahan and Osi. Kiwi was playing hurt all year on a bad ankle and AP was starting to deteriorate at MLB.

Plax going down was the biggest derail of the year, but there were other factors. Still, the most dominant Giants team I ever watched live.

Pass rushed was played
o me, no doubt we win SB if OSI healthy with plax
Think it was a better team than 2007
Defense was running on fumes.

Man, having a healthy Osi would've done wonders.

Also, Plax...Jim Johnson, the late Eagles DC, was quoted as saying our offense without him was much easier to defend. Plax added a dimension to our offense that was crucial & when he wasn't there, we were compromised.

The best Giants team I've ever seen.

needed that X receiver so Smith/Cruz could eat you alive short option. That was the only season ever I felt comfortable on 3rd and short.
I think losing Osi in the preseason
truebluelarry : 1/23/2020 3:25 pm : link
had far more to do with the late season collapse than Burress shooting himself. You could visibly see the defensive front becoming weaker even when Burress was still in the lineup. Kiwanuka was supposed to have been an OLB then shift into the line on passing downs, that rotation that had been so successful in 2007 was negated when he had to start at DE to replace Umenyiora. You can also factor in Strahan retiring depleting the depth of what had been the team's strongest until in 2007.

In my opinion, the play that told the story of 2008 was McNabb running for a first down on 3rd-and-19 in the 3rd quarter of the playoff game. A healthier defensive line would not have allowed that to happen (as noted in 2007 when they sacked him 10 times, and Osi had six of them on his own).

Correction - they sacked McNabb 12 times in 2007.

Yes, the defense was gassed and a bit beat up on the DL by year end.

However, with Plax this offense still moves the ball so we would have had a great chance to get to the SB and win.
Yep I believe the incident derailed a repeat Superbowl for us

We were dominating.
I remember them blowing the doors

They completely dominated them.

Plax was an Eagle-killer. The Eagles themselves said that without him in the lineup they stacked the box to stuff our run game, because we had no one else who could consistently beat them over the top. We couldn't move the chains and keep drives alive. We were 3-13 on 3rd Down, 1-3 on 4th Down. It's no wonder our defense was gassed, even though we had about a one minute edge in TOP.
The first 12 weeks of that season was the last time watching Giant foo

was fun week in and week out. Yes the 2011 run was exhilarating but the games were such nailbiters that they were hard to enjoy. I agree with the sentiments about Osi and the pass rush but the fact is even without him we beat both SB participants convincingly. The games were not as close as the score.

Carolina also got beat after the first round bye IIRC.
2008 was Coughlin's best NYG team

They lost OSI
Lines of Scrimmage : 1/23/2020 5:14 pm : link
in the pre-season. As the season went on the DL showed its lack of depth and then Pierce also got hurt at the end. Even if Plaxico was around I am not sure if they would have gone all the way.
I have vivid memories of the Steelers game from that year
DieHard : 1/23/2020 5:27 pm : link
I was watching with a Steelers fan friend -- that was a slobberknocker of a game, with a ballsy, clutch fourth-down bomb from Eli to Toomer in the 4th Q. I remember turning to my friend after the game and saying, "See you guys in the Super Bowl." What could have been...
Had they won the Super Bowl that year
Manning10 : 1/23/2020 6:35 pm : link
They were favorites out of the NFC it was all right there for them,
They had Home field through the playoffs, Cards upset Carolina, The Giants had beaten the Steelers late in the year at their place.
But Dead eye Plax and Jim Johnson and the Eagles did them in.
Winning would have cemented Eli, Coughlin as Hall of famers.

That game was awesome! My favorite regular season game of the 2000s.

This is all true. Eagles always gave us the most trouble, even the game in Philly that year was a struggle with Plax.

Reese tried to pick up guys from the scrap head (Jerome McDougle and Reynoldo Wynn) and they didn’t do much. Didn’t help that the best player on that defensive side was big Freddie Robbins who was hurt
I remember Tuck puking

during that playoff game. Had the flu. Obviously, that wasn’t the only reason we lost that game, but with Osi’s injury, it was significant.

Pretty sure I remember hearing that once we lost Plax, the Eagles' and Cowboys' secondary didn't have to do anything difficult to lock down our receivers, leaving the front seven free to focus on the run game.
