Peyton reflecting on Eli's career

Bramton1 : 1/23/2020 10:38 pm
Just incredible hearing Peyton talking about his kid brother's career and retirement. You can hear the admiration in his voice. And Peyton brings up some good stories, like his fear that he was a bad luck jinx for the Giants and Eli's response to it.

Although I had to laugh. "After my dad and Dan Marino, he really was my favorite player."
Video - ( New Window )
Wow that is an incredible listen

about Eli’s HOF “debate” that when a QB is one of five multiple SBMVPs, there is no “yeah, but”. Can’t say it any clearer than that.
obviously there's brotherly love involved but that was still great -
Del Shofner : 1/23/2020 11:17 pm : link
boy, it makes you think that there's never been another football family quite like Archie, Peyton and Eli. Three great QBs.

Also - on the other thread about what Eli does next, there was some speculation that Eli and family would return down South - but Peyton obviously doesn't think so, says Eli is now a "real NY/NJ guy."
That is so good

I've never been a huge Eli Manning fan, but I'm really honestly glad for you guys that he's getting a nice farewell and so many nice accolades, and that you get to enjoy this.

I've always found it really special to hear Peyton speak about his kid brother. That's got to be a hell of a thing to experience, knowing what it takes to accomplish a championship and get to cheer for your brother's.

I absolutely love the guy, and I will never forget the amazing rides he took us on in 2007 and 2011. It would have been interesting to see what the team could have done in 2016 had the WRs not all gone to Mexico a few days before the game and proceeded to drop 3 TD passes in the ensuing playoff game, but such is life I suppose.

The only thing I did not like was the power he held over the organization at the end of his career. I don't blame him - they agreed to pay him that money and tried to rebuild around him for one more run. But that is not on Eli, it is on Mara and, to the extent others had a say, Gettleman and Shurmur.

But that is not a discussion for this point. Now is a time to remember Eli for what he brought to this team. And those were some of the best memories any fan could ever ask for. I will always be thankful Eli was a part of the NYG, and I will never forget what he meant to this team. He was a class act all the way - from start to finish - and there is not a Giants' fan that should think otherwise.

He will be a HOFer - whether some idiot pundits think otherwise - and he is every bit deserving of that honor. Maybe he won't be a first ballot guy - though I think he should be - but he will get in.
That was amazing

The WRs trip was to Miami, I think you're thinking of the Romo trip to Mexico in '07 playoffs.

But that WRs boat trip makes less and less sense to me as time goes on (and yet somehow makes more and more sense the more we hear about Beckham).

I mean the Romo trip actually wasn't all that bad when you consider they actually had a bye week, AND they were playing at home anyway so didn't have to account for extra travel time. Romo actually played well in that game too, it was his receivers that inexplicably dropped a ton of passes.

But Beckham and the rest of the WRs going to Miami when they don't even have a bye AND they had to travel to Green Bay that week AND prepare for a playoff game? I don't even know how they managed to fit that in. It was complete insanity and made the Romo trip to Cabo look like nothing.

This is why you can’t get to worked up about what people post on this site. 2 time SB MVP QB and was always a great spokesman for the team and never did anything to embarrass the team. Yet you never been a fan? Unfortunately you aren’t alone on BBI. This is just a great reminder to let some things that are posted here roll off your back. Some people just don’t have a clue.

how can you not get choked up when you hear Peyton Manning, as accomplished and decorated as he is, played in 4 Super Bowls, won 2, multiple MVPs; tell you that his favorite Super Bowl moment was when he watched his little brother do it.

I know there are NYG fans who "don't like" Eli and even more people nationally who don't like the Mannings but when you hear any of them talk I have no idea how it's possible.

Great post Chris. After both 4th Quarter TD's in 42 and 46, the camera showed Peyton going nuts.

Fantastic reflections on Eli's career from Peyton.
BlueLou'sBack : 1/24/2020 8:39 am : link
Clear acknowledgment of the foot and shoulder injuries that Eli endured during his 200+ games starting streak ("and Eli never said a word about it"), total respect for how Eli was never either wowed nor intimidated by situations: like Lambeaub field twice in the playoffs deep in winter, like San Francisco where he endured hit after hit seemingly every play, like staring down one of the greatest teams EVER - "a two headed monster with Brady and Belichick" - to win his first SB, and then an encore performance when Belichick laid out his plan "it's a Cruz and Nick's game, we won't let them beat us" - so Eli's response oh shucks, guess I'll beat you with Manningham, that's fine by me...

There's a shotload of great stuff there.

I think best of all is Peyton's acknowledgement that most players (obviously himself) can and do get waylaid by intimidating situations and moments - but not Eli. Eli's even keel in the face of the NY area's expectations of him, and the media pressure, yeah not everyone is cut out to handle that.

Great find, sticky this!

STRAW man much?

It's more like what Peyton said: nowadays most folks look at it - maybe even "remember" it - as the Giants drafted Eli 1st overall.

I would bet good money that Eli would NOT have rejected SD if not for strong advice from Archie. I believe Archie flew out to SD, spoke to Schottenheimer (and maybe others) about the state of the franchise in late '03 or early '04.

It appears to me that Eli heeded advice from Archie. And it appears to have been good advice. Eli has 2 SBs. Rivers has 0.

Actually, Archie and Eli were advised by Schottenheimer not to come there. I believe I recall reading that he approached them and told them not to come here, not Archie going on a fact finding mission.

There's a strange sensitivity with Manning. I was never a huge fan of his. Doesn't mean I rooted for him less or enjoyed when they won less. That's not a tragedy.

I've alway thought he was a good not great QB, who was a little phony at times, and was part of the problem not the solution in a number of seasons. To pretend like I haven't expressed that for the last 15 years would be disingenuous.

That said, I think it's wonderful that fans who really admired him have a nice opportunity to reflect on his success and enjoy remembering a player who was special to them. My whole point was even me -- a guy who isn't a huge fan thought Peyton's message was special.

He's just not that to me. Totally consistent take from me for his whole career and doesn't detract from my enjoyment of being a Giants fan in anyway.
