Have you seen and hear how many Giants fans have treated him? I don't blame him.

I do. Giants fans are the ones who sold out the stadium every year during his entire tenure, paying exorbitant PSL and ticket prices in doing so. Yes, there are a lot of loud, obnoxious voices, but a lot of appreciative ones, too. A real sour and unnecessary note that detracted from the press conference, in my opinion.

Why would the conversation around Eli be "bittersweet"?
Ten Ton Hammer : 1/24/2020 12:21 pm : link
There's nothing about his career that hasn't been a success. Some of the comments read like he was forced to retire early.

He's retiring in full health, having earned a quarter-billion dollars in earnings, two championships, a bunch of healthy kids, and stats that place him in the conversation with all-time great quarterbacks. He's generally beloved by people inside the league.

Because nine years ago, he was an 8-3 playoff quarterback. Today, he is an 8-4 playoff quarterback. For eight years, they couldn't surround him with an even "average at best" offensive line.

I'm not talking about even winning another title. I'm talking about not having him run for his life for the last eight years.

Agreed, we should have at least been in the playoffs most of those years if Reese was a competent GM. Franchise QB’s aren’t easy to find.

I think Eli declined and has not been great since 2016. But I think the lack of OL accelerated his decline. An above-average OL would have had him playing a few more years, IMO.

I do too. I think many of us felt he got gun-shy. You see this with a lot of veteran QBs who get hit too much.

There were not only too many games when he got abused, but there were too many games when the Giants couldn't pick up a first down on 3rd-and-1. (And too many games where the defense couldn't hold a lead...but that's a different story).

Daniel Jones got hit way too much last year too. Hopefully they will fix it soon or they are going to ruin him too.

Proof that we all hear only what we want to hear. Eli ended that comment with, “I walk away as a New Yorker.” Basically, he’s telling the fans, I love you and I’m one of you. He poked fun at us like he does with his friends, saw us honestly, and accepts it all. Ends it by saying, I am one of you. For you to take that bitter angle from such a tender comment is so unfortunate.

The exact reason why Reese wasn't even mentioned today. The owner gave credit to Ernie for building the Championship teams and no distinct credit or thank you by Eli given to Reese. It is obvious that the negative is Reese.

Acting like PR man Ernie Accorsi was some ace talent scout is a joke. Go look at his 1998-2002 drafts, or some of his Browns greatest hits like Mike Junkin at #4 overall.

Every single GM has a history of misses. Every single one of them.

Accorsi drafted a core NYG team to the tune of 2 Super Bowls and yet the bottom feeders still mock his body of work.

Is this what Eli meant about some NYG fans being "unique"? He was being generous in his choice of words.

Love Coughlin with his Eli comments and letter. It still gets to me that conversation he had with Shurmur, when Shurmur was looking to bench Eli and called Coughlin to discuss.

He said something like "I understand Eli is your guy", to which Coughlin said "yes he is, and he will always be my guy".

No vanilla crap like "well he played well for me but you need to make your own decision" or "he was the best I had at the time" crap. Direct and non apologetic.

And it wasn't just the shitty OL. The defense sucked balls too (other than '16).

How many games in the last 8 years, did Eli give the Giants the lead in the 4th Q, only for the Defense to blow it?
I think Francessa had some stat...
BillKo : 1/24/2020 4:27 pm : link
...that the Giants blew an extraordinary number of games in the fourth quarter over the last 4-5 years.

I want to say like 15..............

Perhaps, though, that's normal with "bad" teams.

There are actually a lot of hall of fame level players who never achieve the level of team success they 'should' have based on their individual talent. Pro football is really hard to win at. Talent is hard to predict and tough to find. They managed to do it twice, which is still more than nearly every active NFL quarterback even nine years later.

It's really hard for me to bemoan missed opportunities when they got two of them, and very few players in history can claim the accomplishment.

I would like 17 years of 10 wins per year minimum too, but that simply doesn't happen anywhere other than new england.
