I'm guessing Giants draft a RB this year in the mid to late rounds....with the focus on the run game by Judge and watching the 49ers, its apparent we need a RB or 2 to spell Saquon. And with the new RB coach, Burton Burns - you know that he'll have a really good read on all of the SEC backs....as he's been in the SEC for the last several years. Thoughts?
Maybe investigate how much Chris Thompson or Peyton Barber wants in FA.
If a RB presents themselves as by far the best value in the draft then you do it, you take the best player. But i wouldn't set out to find one.
After his first concussion, he wasn't the same. In and out of concussion protocol is my best guess. Sometimes, a concussion can derail a person for a year or more.
I like the bulldozer types as well - ever since Larry Czonka and Bettis "The Bus". We had one in Brandon Jacobs.
I don't think height is as important as bulk. I would like to see the Giants go after AJ Dillon out of Boston College. He's only 6'0", but he's 250 lbs and he's a punishing RB - a workhorse guy.
Betis was 5'11" 255 lbs, and could be counted on for short yardage 3rd downs as well as inside the Red Zone.
Read up on AJ Dillon and I think you would like him. Whoever we get will be a backup to Saquon of course, so a change of pace back would be nice - either a scat back rabbit or a bulldozer. I prefer the bulldozer type.
AJ Dillon - the most physical running back in the draft. - ( New Window )
How I'd dearly love an Ironhead Heyward or Mike Alstott, but I haven't seen a FB like that in years. A more physical RB with some size who isn't contact averse would be a blessing. I'm still investigating Patrick Taylor Jr. of Memphis as a possibility. Tall, but not massive, decent speed, hands and great vision, and a knack for short yardage. And he should be available in the later rounds, or even as an UDFA. Remember, the Giants get three round 7 picks this year. Those are almost throwaway picks, but you never know, Bradshaw was found in the 7th too!

SEC RBs we can pick up on day 3?

After reading about Dillon's size, and a description of his game, I found video of his play to watch, and I wouldn't touch him. Frankly, he looks like a slower Ron Dayne.

I think Sy'56 mentioned Dillon, talking about a bruiser who could spell Barkely on short-yardage among other things. Sy said we should use Barkely more like Carolina uses McCaffrey, and a bruiser RB would help us do that.
But my opinion of Dillon remains, though I could be wrong.
Just went back to some of his video to see what disturbs me so much in his game for that role. The first thing that jumps out is that while he is obviously a big, strong young man, he's not a particularly violent runner. But what concerns me most is that he doesn't appear to have very good balance to the extent that he often looks about to topple over. If the balance issue I think I see is true, that's a real problem for a short yardage RB.
Gallman can play - he needs more opportunities to shine.
Buck Allen can play, too.
Penney was an NFL tail back before he became a fullback, so he can fill in there if needed.
Plus they have a prospect in Hilliman who should get another chance in camp.
My considered opinion is that they should be drafting OL and defense, and find the further reinforcements for the RB group from cheap journeymen and rookies.
Also from Miami, Deejay Dallas is a versatile guy who plays very tough. Has great hands (played WR his first year at Miami, almost played CB too), runs through a lot of tackles, can play some specials.
The second highlight here is him running through a Ryan Connelly arm tackle out of the wild cat vs. Wisconsin in a bowl game a couple years ago.

"Not every back’s going to be a home-run hitter. He gets those 10-, 15-yard runs breaking tackles, power runner -- punishing runner. When we’re building something, that’s the kind I want to build around.”
