drafting a RB this year

Andy in Boston : 1/24/2020 10:49 am
I'm guessing Giants draft a RB this year in the mid to late rounds....with the focus on the run game by Judge and watching the 49ers, its apparent we need a RB or 2 to spell Saquon. And with the new RB coach, Burton Burns - you know that he'll have a really good read on all of the SEC backs....as he's been in the SEC for the last several years. Thoughts?
What I really want to know is
figgy2989 : 1/24/2020 10:50 am : link
what happened to Gallman that he fell out of favor with Shurmur and the previous staff.
If we use a mid-round pick on a RB

I'm going to have catastrophic diarrhea.
If BPA, sure, but I wouldn't set out to find one.

I'm good with Gallman and Buck Allen types

Maybe investigate how much Chris Thompson or Peyton Barber wants in FA.

If a RB presents themselves as by far the best value in the draft then you do it, you take the best player. But i wouldn't set out to find one.
Why not two or three

you can't have enough.

SEC RBs we can pick up on day 3?
i wouldn't this year over OL

once the line is established then yes we should draft/sign RBs regularly.

After his first concussion, he wasn't the same. In and out of concussion protocol is my best guess. Sometimes, a concussion can derail a person for a year or more.
It's not crazy

All world Saquon has flaws to his game. Need a short yardage FB that can block, get that tough yard, and lead block for Barkley.

I like the bulldozer types as well - ever since Larry Czonka and Bettis "The Bus". We had one in Brandon Jacobs.

I don't think height is as important as bulk. I would like to see the Giants go after AJ Dillon out of Boston College. He's only 6'0", but he's 250 lbs and he's a punishing RB - a workhorse guy.

Betis was 5'11" 255 lbs, and could be counted on for short yardage 3rd downs as well as inside the Red Zone.

Read up on AJ Dillon and I think you would like him. Whoever we get will be a backup to Saquon of course, so a change of pace back would be nice - either a scat back rabbit or a bulldozer. I prefer the bulldozer type.
AJ Dillon - the most physical running back in the draft. - ( New Window )
I've wanted a complimentary RB . . . .

to spell Saquon ever since Saquon was drafted. Given better blocking and schemes for his use, I expect he will return to being an explosive play maker, but he just isn't the type of RB you want trying to pick up a half yard for a new set of downs, or a TD. And frankly, he's even far from ideal at picking up blitzes.

How I'd dearly love an Ironhead Heyward or Mike Alstott, but I haven't seen a FB like that in years. A more physical RB with some size who isn't contact averse would be a blessing. I'm still investigating Patrick Taylor Jr. of Memphis as a possibility. Tall, but not massive, decent speed, hands and great vision, and a knack for short yardage. And he should be available in the later rounds, or even as an UDFA. Remember, the Giants get three round 7 picks this year. Those are almost throwaway picks, but you never know, Bradshaw was found in the 7th too!

actually a really good RB class also... If you look man QB, WR, RB, OL all really good and deep.

After reading about Dillon's size, and a description of his game, I found video of his play to watch, and I wouldn't touch him. Frankly, he looks like a slower Ron Dayne.

I think Sy'56 mentioned Dillon, talking about a bruiser who could spell Barkely on short-yardage among other things. Sy said we should use Barkely more like Carolina uses McCaffrey, and a bruiser RB would help us do that.
I think using Barkley like . . . .
TC : 1/24/2020 12:40 pm : link
McCaffrey would be about ideal.

But my opinion of Dillon remains, though I could be wrong.

Just went back to some of his video to see what disturbs me so much in his game for that role. The first thing that jumps out is that while he is obviously a big, strong young man, he's not a particularly violent runner. But what concerns me most is that he doesn't appear to have very good balance to the extent that he often looks about to topple over. If the balance issue I think I see is true, that's a real problem for a short yardage RB.

I'm good with who they have now.
Red Dog : 1/24/2020 12:40 pm : link
They've got quantity. And they only need 2 guys behind Barkley plus maybe someone on the Practice Squad.

Gallman can play - he needs more opportunities to shine.

Buck Allen can play, too.

Penney was an NFL tail back before he became a fullback, so he can fill in there if needed.

Plus they have a prospect in Hilliman who should get another chance in camp.

My considered opinion is that they should be drafting OL and defense, and find the further reinforcements for the RB group from cheap journeymen and rookies.

A day 3 RB is 100% necessary - someone like travis homer
Eric on Li : 1/24/2020 12:47 pm : link
who can play specials, pass protect, and just add a little bit of dynamic ability off the bench when Saquon is out.

Also from Miami, Deejay Dallas is a versatile guy who plays very tough. Has great hands (played WR his first year at Miami, almost played CB too), runs through a lot of tackles, can play some specials.

The second highlight here is him running through a Ryan Connelly arm tackle out of the wild cat vs. Wisconsin in a bowl game a couple years ago.

Just grab Peyton Barber in FA, he's not going to break the bank.

“I love him," Arians said. "For a man that size, you know, when you watched the tape, you don’t see him as 230 (pounds). You think he’s a 205-pound running back because he’s got great feet.

"Not every back’s going to be a home-run hitter. He gets those 10-, 15-yard runs breaking tackles, power runner -- punishing runner. When we’re building something, that’s the kind I want to build around.”
Also Asking About Gallman
Samiam : 1/24/2020 2:48 pm : link
Agree with the question posted above. What happened to Gallman to get him on the shit list? He wasn’t even active the last few games and was a healthy scratch. The only thing I can think about is that maybe he wasn’t a good ST player and they want the backup RB to play specials. I know I heard Gallman name came up on a Giants podcast and the moderator said Gallman was never told the reason for his status. Was anything ever said about Gallman was effectively benched? He seemed like a competent backup
