Spagnuolo is headed back to the Super Bowl, 12 years after he masterminded the Giants defense that harassed Tom Brady and ruined the Patriots’ undefeated season in Super Bowl XLII. One year later, he was the hotheaded coaching candidate grabbed by the St. Louis Rams, on the opposite end of the Midwest state where he has re-risen. That three-year head-coach stint didn’t work, and Spagnuolo ultimately returned to the Giants in 2015. Three more seasons as defensive coordinator ended with four games as interim head coach and an interview for the full-time position replacing Ben McAdoo. The job instead went to Pat Shurmur — already fired and on to the Broncos — while Spagnuolo is a difference-maker again. |
Weird career.
I'll always love him for 07.
As with all coaches, give him a bunch of inferior players, he's going to struggle.
The difference with him, his schemes & philosophy that demands higher quality performance from EVERY member (he's always stretching them,) if it's not there, the inferiority is magnified.
Other coaches' systems tend to have built-in designs that often hide individual incompetence.
He's not very good at making players better, but he's an exceptional "X & Os" guru. In that respect, he's a credit to the Jim Johnson school of NFL defenses.
