Coached JJ Watt, Russell Wilson and Travis Frederick Â
I know someone is going to come back with an angry retort about power dynamics and such, but personally.... I don't care. If we are talking college students, then they are above the age of consent, so it isn't illegal. Coaches can't coach from jail.... Beyond that, I don't care.
RE: Coached JJ Watt, Russell Wilson and Travis Frederick Â
Was DC under Alvarez then promoted. But the D (especially LBs) was more consistently elite when switched to a 3-4 under Aranda and continued under Wilcox and Leonhard (who would have been a great DC for Judge).
Probably wait until after signing day to announce Â
I think this information is a great clue to the orientation of the defense.
Patrick Graham seems to hate the question, "Are you a 3-4 or 4-3 coach?" He responds, "Yes."
However, given Bret Bielema's coaching background and given that we are going to have a coach who exclusively handles outside linebackers, it strongly suggests to me we are still going to be mainly a 3-4 team. Why is this important? It means to be that Lorenzo Carter, Oshane Ximines, and potentially even Markus Golden still have a home here.

Maybe, but as a college coach and DC his teams only ever ran a 4-3.

Plus, how often will we be is sub-packages, 4-2-5, and so forth?
In a 3-4, your pass rushers are the outside linebackers. The "edge" rushers as they are called today.
If you are going to mainly run a 4-3, I don't see the need for separate outside and inside linebacker coaches. And Bilema's background includes defensive line.
It's 3-4 base, Graham is being purposely obtuse. Judge grew up under Saban, a 3-4 guys and Belichick, a 3-4 guy since he started coaching defense and we hire a 3-4 coach to coach OLBs. It's a 3-4 base, it always will be, don't let this blah blah blah fool you. There is a distinction in personnel, absolutely positively different roles for DE in a 3-4 than a 4-3 and you NEED a NT in a 3-4 and we have three guys who can do it. It's going to be a cover 2 shell basically, a bend but but don't break umbrella style that Belichick has used since the dawn of time.
DG and Mara hired a 3-4 philosophy 2 years ago, and have been accumulating players toward that end. They're likely to still believe in that philosophy rather than reversing course and starting all over again.
It is also easier to be a base 3-4 and switch to a 4-3 when needed Â
as opposed to a base 4-3 and switching to a 3-4 when needed.
Agreed, it is also easier to find 3-4 OLB’s than 4-3 DE’s. If the giants switched back to a 4-3 scheme Lorenzo Carter and Oshane Ximines would be poor fits. Also they would have a major logjam at DT and would force them to let Leonard Williams walk since they already have Lawrence, Tomlinson, Hill, and McIntosh battling for 2 spots.
New #Giants asst coach Bret Bielema's title is OLB coach/senior assist Â
Antonio Pierce would be nice.
It would be just like "Worm" Edwards to do that just to screw us.
Rob Ryan. DUH!
Actually, he was the ILB coach for Washington.
