Strahan’s 92 to be retired as well

RodneyHamp : 1/25/2020 8:40 am
I didn’t see any thread about this:

Quote:
For a team with such a long history, the Giants are quite selective at this. Hall of Famers get their numbers retired. No one has ever been assigned No. 92 since Michael Strahan last wore it in 2007, but the Giants have never announced that number has been retired. Strahan was enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2014.

“It’s retired,’’ Mara said.

Officially?

“Not yet,’’ Mara said. “We’ll do Michael’s announcement another day, but Eli’s will be retired.’’

10 & 92 to be retired - ( New Window )
Good - well deserved. Eli and Strahan were great players and are fine

Giants are going to run out of jerseys

Rosters keep growing with restictions on numbers that can be used for each position. They should unretire numbers after X years.

Happy for Strahan though.

At the current rate, this is only an issue if the team lasts another 100 to 200 years.
They should start using hexadecimal numbers

The captain needs his retired long over due.

Kind of defeats the point of retiring it in the first place

IMO it would be awful for a team to unretire a number after promising a player that it will never be worn again.

Just very selective and use the Ring of Honor accept for the most special cases
Carson's isn't retired?
SFGFNCGiantsFan : 1/25/2020 10:06 am : link
That's a travesty.
Carson's won't be retired.

At this point, many others have worn 53. Right or wrong, that time has passed.

None of us will have to worry about that.
Glad 92 is finally getting his official due

The “running out of numbers” fear wouldn’t be so bad if they loosened up the jersey number/positional tie in like in college.
I love Strahan but the fact he's getting his # retired
TheMick7 : 1/25/2020 10:50 am : link
before Carson is ridiculous! They keep parading #53 out to players that couldn't hold Harry's jock! I have to believe Harry personally looks at this as a slap in the face from Mara, yet he continues to act as The Captain, showing up at Eli's retirement yesterday, continuing to show his class & dignity!
That's a big surprise, but well deserved!

I knew they were going to retire #10, but had no idea plans were in place for #92.
Well deserved.

Who really knows what goes into making the decision. With limited numbers maybe they determined the maximum if deserving they will retire is two from any Super Bowl era team, and if so it’s not about Carson or MS being more deserving, but rather he was just a notch below what LT and Simms were to those teams. Or maybe it goes back to prior to that and when he used to be very outspoken and critical of the team and used to threaten to hint about wanting to be traded and threatened to go fly fighter planes or something like that if not. Maybe Wellington took exception to that and told John he would never retire Carson’s number no matter how great he was on the field.

I think Carson was great, a HOF LB, one of my favorites but my point is we really don’t know all that goes into making the decision and while I would welcome if they did do it, I don’t mind that they fall on the side of being ultra exclusive in bestowing that honor. There will always be players border line deserving wherever they draw the line, that’s what makes rising above that such an honor
Well

deserved. Strahan was one of the greatest Giants. His contributions are legendary.
Carson's
AcidTest : 1/25/2020 1:15 pm : link
number should also be retired.
Patches
Simms : 1/25/2020 1:39 pm : link
I think if they run out of numbers due to positions, maybe an honorary patch in tribute can be worn. Have seen it done within the college ranks.

Unless the NFL stretches the numbers worn by position??
Finally, weel deserved...

Eli and Strahan have set a very high bar for jersey # retirement: 15+ yrs only Giants,1+ SB victory, Multiple pro bowls, multiple Giants & NFL records, good citizens, HOF consideration.

It would be nice to retire 53, but you are way too angry about. I doubt Carson is all that upset.
Always some

whinercthat has to piss all over every good moment.

The internet is annoying.
What I remember most clearly about Strahan is the 2003 playoff game
GeofromNJ : 1/25/2020 8:07 pm : link
against the 49ers - the game where the giants blew a 24-point lead and lost, 39-38. Strahan played his heart out and was not the reason for the loss. All during the second half, Jeff Garcia ran around in the backfield as he engineered the SF comeback and Strahan spent two quarters chasing him down. Late in the 4th quarter, in between snaps, Strahan was waving to the sidelines begging for the coaching staff to take him out for a play or two so he could catch his breath. As per Fassel's incompetence, Strahan's pleas were ignored and he was forced to continue to chase Garcia, even though he was totally spent. On the final go-ahead drive by SF, Strahan was so spent he could barely breathe was a non factor. Most observers insist the Giants lost that game on a bad referee call. True enough. But I also blame Fassel. One, for failing to sign a competent long snapper, and two, for not giving Strahan a breather which would have made him effective late in the game.

Eli and Strahan deserve it. That's it for the moment though. No one's asking for anything more. It would have to be at least another 15 years before we even consider retiring another one (AT LEAST), so I wouldn't worry about it just yet. Ultimately there are only 53 guys on the team each year, let them figure out what jersey # they can wear, we're not going to "run out" any time soon.
