Judge keeps Ben Wilkerson as Asst O Line Coach

YANKEE28 : 1/25/2020 9:44 am
Per Dan Duggan

Joe Judge is retaining another member of Pat Shurmur’s staff: Ben Wilkerson, who was the assistant OL coach for the past two years, will return, per source. Wilkerson joins Thomas McGaughey, Tyke Tolbert, Anthony Blevins and Tom Quinn as holdovers from Shurmur’s staff.
Wilkerson

and Joe Judge are similar in age (37 and 38), so they played college football against each other when Wilkerson was at LSU and Judge at Miss State.
Still positions

to be filled with TE on offense and DL, ILB and potentially safety as well? Coming together. Should get the formal announcements soon you would think.

when Wilkerson played for LSU, he was coached by Nick Saban, so in several ways this ties together.

Wilkerson was a Center at LSU and in the NFL.

Could he get the opportunity to coach another LSU Center (Lloyd Cushenberry) in his future?? Most scouts felt that Cushenberry was the most impressive O lineman at this weeks Senior Bowl practices.
Kind of an odd career.

Guy wins the Rimington Trophy, 1st Team All-SEC...then he doesn't get drafted in 2005, UDFA to the Bengals...a year there, two years with the Falcons, a short stint in the UFL ending in 2009, two years later he's a Graduate Assistant at LSU.

Wilkerson actually done the last two years?

He was in charge of making sure Solder yelled “lookout!” when he gave up the outside rush.
Of Course

Our OL hasn't blocked a thing in several years. Why not retain the Assistant OL Coach, who has presumably also failed to teach our OL anything.

well i know its hard to understand for alot of fans who think they know so much better but the Giants current HC interviewed him and saw an advantage to keep him on the staff.

that's good enough for me

He is an assistant. He could only implement what Hunter told him to do. Now,he'll have a competent OL coach being under Colombo!
Love all the negative insight

When thinking of the youngings, such as Nick Gates, I think they showed progress and signs of being well coached...

I wonder who coached the first/second year players? From what I am reading about a lot of our hires, it seems to be the job of the assistant to focus in on the rookies and young players.... Perhaps that was the case here, and it was determined that he did a relatively good job?
They is plural

You'd think the Giants

Would have a good idea of his value.

It's not like they aren't cleaning house.

People speaking definitely with great authority about things they know very little (or often nothing) about.
It’s not fair to judge Wilkerson IMO
Jay on the Island : 1/25/2020 3:59 pm : link
Hal Hunter was the man in charge and Wilkerson’s job was to follow Hunters methods. I wanted the Giants to fire Hunter around midseason and give Wilkerson a chance in the lead role. We would have gotten a better idea of Wilkerson’s coaching ability and we could have gotten lucky and found the long term answer at the position.

Anyway, I am happy to have Colombo and I look forward to seeing the line perform under a legitimate OL coach. IMO Hal Hunter was Shurmur’s biggest mistake. He should have kept Mike Solari or added a better option like Munchak or Bill Callahan with the assistant HC title.

There'd be like two threads on here without that.

Not sure who you are asking. If you are addressing me, I'd also add Chad Slade to the list along with Nick Gates.
