Kevin Sherrer enters his second season on head coach Jeremy Pruitt’s staff. After spending his first season as co-defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach, Sherrer will serve as special teams coordinator in addition to inside linebackers coach.
Sherrer has coached six linebackers selected in the NFL Draft in the last five years. He has won two national championships and three SEC championships.
In his first season on Rocky Top, Sherrer helped a UT defense improve 74 spots from 2017 to 2018 in run defense and 45 spots in third down defense.
Prior to arriving in Knoxville, Sherrer spent the previous four seasons as the outside linebackers coach at Georgia, where he helped lead the Bulldogs to the SEC Championship and College Football Playoff National Championship game in 2017.
He also was the defensive coordinator/defensive backs coach at South Alabama in 2013 and served as the director of player development at Alabama from 2010-12.
Sherrer was a three-year letterwinner at tight end at Alabama from 1993-95 and was an accomplished high school assistant coach in the state, including replacing Pruitt as defensive coordinator at prep powerhouse Hoover High School.
Well, we should at least do well on Special Teams.
And there is that Saban link.
Kidding aside, looks like another piece of the interlocking puzzle of JJ's staff. ILBs are now covered. I will not be surprised if more information reveals Sherrer is a great teacher.
UT Special teams Coordinator ('19)
UT Defensive Coordinator (co) ('18)
UT Inside LB's ('18-'19)
UGA Outside LB's (14-'17)
South Alabama D-Coord + Defensive Backs ('13)
BAMA Player Development ('10-'12)
Seems like the odds are that he will be a defensive assistant somewhere but he doesn't seem like a 1 trick pony.
RE: the thing that stands out about his resume is diverse experience Â

Without knowing much about the Pruitt staff, it's interesting that he was essentially demoted last year.
Anak - it appears like a reassignment more than a demotion Â
the other co-DC remained (Chris Rumph) and both kept their roles as LB coaches so it wasn't a wholesale defensive change, it's Pruitt's defensive system after all, so it seems like they just wanted to add Derrick Ansley who had worked with Pruitt at Bama in (16-17) and then been the DB coach of the Raiders in 2018. Pruitt adding a guy he coached with at Bama with NFL experience to his staff makes sense.
I have no idea so it's purely speculation, but he could have moved Ferrer to ST coordinator over the other co-DC because he thought he was more capable of learning a new role?
I don't have a ton of insight into Tennessee but it looks like they actually had a decent year compared to rest of the post-Fulmer years and ended the year on a 6 game win streak.
Stapleton says he's coaching ILB's which makes the most sense Â
I would like to see Carter play inside or at least be given an opportunity to fail inside. Let's say we sign Yannick (sp?) and resign Golden then that LB corps looks pretty decent with Connelly and Carter inside. Obviously there would be more potential than actual production but that still looks like a huge improvement over what we have had the last decade or so.
Depending on what happens in FA and possibly the draft Â

Tennessee's linebackers weren't great in coverage most of the season, and opposing tight ends and running backs were able to find space and get open for catches and touchdowns on a near-weekly basis, though. Florida's Kyle Pitts (four catches for 62 yards and a touchdown) had a big game against the Vols, and tight ends or backs from Georgia State, Alabama and Missouri all found the end zone. The Vols held up pretty well against Indiana's tight ends in the bowl game. Link - ( New Window )

Right because he’ll be working with the same level of talent here 🙄

And you know, based on Judge’s words, I’m sure he will find out what position best suits Carters talents. I wouldn’t be surprised to find out ILB is it. Then, this coach can coach him up and put him next to Connelly.
Then, if we can either resign Golden or pick up someone better + Simmons....we may actually have 4 pretty good linebackers. But I’m getting ahead of myself again, aren’t I?

This is a very underrated hire. Giants fans need to be excited about this one! He is no Antonio Pierce but as a Vols fan I can attest to the improvement he brought with him to the team. He was our Co-DC 2 years ago and our Special Teams coach AS WELL as our ILB coach last year.
I know he flashed as a pass rusher this season with 4.5 sacks but he struggled mightily versus the run. This will be an important offseason for him as he needs to get much stronger in order to hold up versus the run.
The Giants will add an edge rusher or two this offseason so Ximines is likely battling Carter for the primary backup spot. He could be an important piece of the defense even if he is just a situational pass rusher. Let’s hope he takes a big step forward under an improved coaching staff.
Ok, so you see that TE? Ignore him. You don’t want to get distracted by his trying to fool you by running a pass pattern. That’s a red herring.
Focus on your blitz. No, too much penetration! Just get to the LOS, make contact with the blocker, and stand there helplessly. More helpless! You’re at lost puppy level, but I need you to get to polar bear whose ice floe melted level.
Hey! Stop looking at the TE! Pervert. I told you to ignore him. But if you can’t, get no closer than 3 yards. Just let him catch the pass and flail at him. More haplessness! Imagine you’re playing in ankle shackles and a straight jacket. Good. That’s better.
Now on run fits, you want to find the blocker in your gap, engage him, give ground, fade back like you’re on skates....wait for it...wait for it...there, now fall on the RBs back 7 yards from the LOS.

Kevin Sherrer is expected to leave Tennessee and join Joe Judge's staff coaching inside linebackers, via @GoVols247
Actually the player I hope we can zero in on now is Darrell Taylor from Tennessee....he is going to be an outstanding EDGE rusher in the NFL....he's a freaky talent...
Well, if he brings Daniel Bituli with him as an UDFA, it'd be awesome

He’s never even coached TE’s, has he? Why would we hire him to do that when he’s had success coaching defense?
Quote:
Maybe he was hired as TE coach and not ILB coach? IDK. He did coach Lorenzo Carter at Georgia, along with guys like Leonard Floyd and Jordan Jenkins.

Not that I know of. But yes, he was a TE in college.

I would have to guess that Freddie Kitchens is gonna be our TEs coach.

...but I'm not gonna get too excited about the Giants hiring a LBer coach.
I'm just waiting to see if the 2020 Giants can find at least one play-maker for this pathetic defense.

From that photo you posted, sure looks like you found our play-maker.
