NFT: swam my first competitve race

Alan in Toledo : 1/26/2020 9:33 am
Yesterday in Sarasota. Took up swimming in 2018 for health reasons at the suggestion of my personal trainer as serious back and foot problems had ended my tournament tennis career.

Swimming even 50 yards is difficult. I've competed my whole life in various ways. Now I'm no longer able or capable to compete in bridge, squash, hockey, touch football, or tennis so swimming it is.

The misery of serious old age (85).

Way to go Alan.

Need to keep the competitive juices flowing and have something you can look forward to doing everyday or weekly.
Very impressive

I can't tell you how important it is to stay active.

Actually you know that other wise you wouldn't be doing it!

AS someone else said have you tried cycling. We have a great bike trail here in Clermont that I use regularly. Gets my heart rate up and there's no impact on the joints. Just need to be aware of th cars when at crossings.
amazing

I did swim team when I was a kid. Not the high-level year round teams, but a summer league. I was decent enough. One memory always stuck out in my mind though - I once swam as a teenager against an old Little League teammate who had just taken up swimming. He was a big time star athlete in four sports in high school (baseball, soccer, football, and track) and one of his coaches had suggested summer swimming as a good way to stay in shape in the offseason. I wasn't a fraction of the athlete he was, but I beat his ass good because I had great stroke technique and he didn't. After the race he said swimming was the hardest thing he'd ever done in sports.

Congrats, Alan.
My son just reminded me

Had won a very tough national event and a number of regional events (all on teams) but I lost my mojo as I aged.
I'm overwhelmed by the positive responses

Thanks to all who posted.

FYI, much of my time these days is spent maintaining the website I started in 2004 to help senior men tournament tennis players find tournaments.
