I haven’t seen his name come up much, in regards to NFL Free Agency. According to Mike Garafolo, he had a number of opportunities to play this past season, but intentionally took the season off to get right, mentally and physically.
I’d be interested to see the contract (length and APY) that he warrants in FA. We do have a need for a ball hawking safety.
What are your thoughts on him?
Devin McCourty is a real possibility. He'll be costly on a per year cost, but it will be a short term investment so the overall contract should be reasonable. Guy can still play.
Broncos have come out and said Simmons’ will he tagged it a long term deal isn’t agreed to, so I’d scratch him off that list.
I’m of the camp of finding our solution in the draft, but a guy who has been there and done that really well, for years, to guide them, on a shorter deal, could prove beneficial
- JJ has a long range vision and is consciously hiring teachers.
- He is apparently assembling a large staff which will allow more attention to non-starters (e.g. Schuplinski with Garappola in NE).
- We have a relatively young base already, with potential talent that may need time to develop. Some are position flexible which helps this strategy.
- The NYG draft philosophy of "character, captains and intelligence" may finally start paying some dividends.
During those years the Packers had the highest number of "home grown" starters which meant fewer vet FAs and thus more $ they could spend on keeping their own stars. Everyone understood the "Green Bay Way".

I hope he can find a team where he'd be the last piece of their puzzle, so to speak, but for the Giants my hope is that they can get a guy like Justin Simmons, Anthony Harris, or Clinton-Dix. Younger, locked up for a while, able to grow with the rest of our young secondary.

I want strength up the middle on defense, which is why I keep pushing for ILB and FS in free agency, hedging our bets before the draft. But I also want that strength to be long-term, with younger FA's. I want guys that can still play at a high level for a while, not just set a good example for the younger players. Guidance should come from our coaches, first and foremost.

The only reason Green Bay had that philosophy was because they couldn’t afford to pay anybody else with the qb and his o line making big money. We have a rookie contract qb and a rookie contract star, we need to go all in. Plan that the free agents will fail and draft their replacements but these holes need to be plugged immediately so our stars can shine.
Agreed, but he’s not coming back to a prove it deal, imv

similar to Green Bay's philosophy some years ago. This will result in a few down years initially and a rethinking of the purpose of the Practice Squad. I think the NYG are currently uniquely ready because:

Fair point. But is it the chicken or egg kind of discussion?
The fact remains that they had the money to pay their QB and OL without having to let some go and they still won titles.
The intangibles of roster stability including not having to let your best players go because of the salary cap is still valuable.
Yes, my first sentence said: GB's philosophy "some years ago". I agree that it is not a strategy for every team, during every "administration".
My point is that for the reasons I listed, I think it would work now for JJ's reign.

For the past couple of years, Green Bay has been very active in free agency, most notably last year, when they went all-out to sign the "Smith Brothers," Preston and Z'Darius.

Understood. However, I think the best teams are those that not only draft well and develop their "home grown" talent, but also use free agency judiciously, adding key pieces whenever and wherever it's feasible and financially sound.

Agreed!
