NGT: Drew Brees Mulling Over Retirement

Saos1n : 1/26/2020 10:10 am
Plans to make a decision in a month or so.

From Amie Just on Twitter

Expect a decision from Drew Brees in about a month, he told me today.

He said he hasn’t thought about his future yet, and is “waiting until football is totally done” before he starts his process.
The main factor besides his family
robbieballs2003 : 1/26/2020 10:11 am : link
Is the team he currently has. They are really good. I'd be surprised if he doesn't give it another go.
I think this year he really
section125 : 1/26/2020 10:18 am : link
started to struggle throwing the ball. Lots of shoulder in his motion.
I’d put it at low odds for him to retire
UConn4523 : 1/26/2020 10:20 am : link
the team is good enough, they need to get hot in the playoffs. But the division is basically a cakewalk right now. Only real competition I see is if Tampa gets a solid starter but even then they aren’t as good as the Saints.

Is his contracted voided? Looks like there was an out for the Saints. Might as well just give him $35m deal for 1 year and give it one more try.
Would not be surprised

To see him decide based on how his body responds in the offseason. If the aches and pains that usually went away do not he chooses to retire. At this point he is taking it year by year and due to the relationship he has with New Orleans organization he won’t leave then in a lurch like Rob Gronkowski did to New England.
He would hurt Eli chances of 1st ballot HOF

gronk announced his retirement in march

how much more notice do you expect?
I keep thinking of his botched jewelry investment
UConn4523 : 1/26/2020 10:31 am : link
and he strikes as the type of guy who couldn’t turn down a payday unless he absolutely had to.

Warm weather division, 9-10 indoor games, and an almost guaranteed playoff berth are tough to turn down (along with the money).
Seeing Eli retire
Giantimistic : 1/26/2020 10:32 am : link
Could have made an impact on him. Maybe he saw how at peace Eli was and the overly positive support he received.

The end of March about two weeks after Free Agency started so all of the good TE’s had signed elsewhere and New England had already budgeted their cap space. As I read it, Brees will have an answer prior to Free Agency period.
He wants to get paid
Metnut : 1/26/2020 10:37 am : link
and is going to wrangle every cent he can out of the Saints.
Why not retire?
Klaatu : 1/26/2020 10:44 am : link
He's not getting any taller.

HA! I kill me.
This is like 2/3 years in a row his arm started to crap the bed
Zeke's Alibi : 1/26/2020 10:57 am : link
as the season wore on and its getting earlier and earlier in the season. He'd be smart to retire this year.

This. Brees did also have a significant hand injury this year, not sure how much that may have affected him. I think the team has figured out ways around this with using Taysum Hill but still I think your right. He just isn’t suited to play a full season anymore. Not saying he is holding that team back, he is a huge reason they got to the playoffs, he is also a huge reason they lost as well though. Tough call.
I think it's more up to the Saints...
bw in dc : 1/26/2020 11:20 am : link
if they want him back. They actually played well without him this year. Bridgewater did a very adequate job.
They could probably win
Tuckrule : 1/26/2020 11:36 am : link
With taysom hill. I truly believe that.

Eli would be lucky to get in???
KDavies : 1/26/2020 11:45 am : link
Talk about an ignorant statement. He is one of 5 football players ever to be a Super Bowl MVP twice. In the top 7 all-time in passing yards and TDs, and never missed a game to injury. Although not guaranteed first ballot, he is definitely a HOFer
Eli's decision has zero weight or
jvm52106 : 1/26/2020 11:47 am : link
influence over Brees's decision. It will be $$$ for sure. He cane up short in multiple games this year and I think the Saints would be wise to go cheaper, Bridgewater and Hill and restock the shelves. They are a vet laden defensive team with young playmakers on offense. They need to backfill that defense and add a developmental QB.

He slipped a bit this year. The numbers didn't really reflect it but he seemed just a tad off to me.
Lucky to get in?
BBelle21 : 1/26/2020 12:04 pm : link
Some voters are already lobbying for him as a 1st Ballot HOFer and that he SHOULD get in on the 1st Ballot, so not sure where this lucky statement comes from.

Drew Brees, don’t retire the same year as Eli, ok? Thanks :)

I could make a case that he was the reason the Saints lost against the Vikings. He was absolutely dreadful for the whole game.
Brees will get in quite quickly.

Seems to make a lot of sense to the Saints.

Anyone who peddles the preposterous notion QBs don’t lose arm strength as they age should watch Brees
^
ColHowPepper : 1/26/2020 1:28 pm : link
christian, he had the shoulder injury that played a part in SD trade to the Saints, that could be a real factor here. Moreover, having a rocket for an arm was never part of Brees' toolkit.
The Saints cap situation is tight even with Brees unsigned
cosmicj : 1/26/2020 1:32 pm : link
That team has had its run and is about to rebuild. They will need to smash their payroll. If Brees doesn’t retire, I think it’s even odds he goes to another team.

“ #Seahawks  QB Russell Wilson is giving up his starting spot in today’s Pro Bowl to #Saints  QB Drew Brees.”
His skills have declined a bit.
Giant John : 1/26/2020 3:05 pm : link
In terms of arm strength. If he want to go out near the top of his game now would be that time.
He has lost a ton off his fastball
arniefez : 1/26/2020 3:09 pm : link
I'm sure he's aware. He might have another year in him but maybe NO doesn't want him back? He isn't a free agent though.
I think he's retiring
DavidinBMNY : 1/26/2020 4:40 pm : link
And Bridegwater and Hill will transition to a new QB. Good chance Rivers retires as well and I wouldn't be shocked with the injuries he has had if Stafford hangs them up. Back injuries are serious.

Lucky?

He will be in the HOF. There is zero chance a two-time Superbowl MVP in the media capital of the world with his longevity will be denied the HOF.

Anybody that says says otherwise is a dipshit, present company included.
Brees
OC2.0 : 1/27/2020 3:18 am : link
I'd go all in that he takes 1 more swing at the fences.
All of the old guard looked finished this year....
Kanavis : 1/27/2020 7:33 am : link
That includes Brady, Breeze, Eli, Rivers. Even Rodgers didn't look great at times.

There is an active debate on the NO forums about whether to keep him. They can't afford him and therefore won't have enough of a team around him. This is the year that that generation of QBs hit the wall. They should move on.

As for the hall... Eli is in. But will probably not be first ballot. Definitely not if Ben and Breeze are the same year. Rothlesberger should also retire.
The Saints..
FatMan in Charlotte : 1/27/2020 8:50 am : link
have been a team that is built to win in the regular season and have some significant warts that show themselves in the playoffs. First off, they have a fairly easy road to get a division title. But they haven't been able to run the ball to keep TOP like they could when they had Ingram, and they are very weak in the secondary which allows playoff teams to stay within reach of them.

They also don't play particularly well on the road, and even that didn't matter this year.

If Brees regresses more, I think their window to win may have closed. Their saving grace is playing in a division where the other teams are much more worse off.
Be silly to retire
Jimmy Googs : 1/27/2020 2:33 pm : link
Despite playoff disappointments the team and Brees are still playing at a high enough level to give it a go in 2020...
