How do you establish your opinions on college players ?

Archer : 1/26/2020 2:40 pm
I am reading that many of us are offering their opinions on players
How do you formulate your opinions?

We have few options with which to evaluate the players

Watching the games live or on videos
Observing televised practices
Formulate an opinion based upon expert analysis
Watching the Combine
Predicting success based upon physical attributes such as size, speed, explosiveness, arm strength etc.

I personally prefer watching games and not relying on others
I enjoy hearing other opinions but I tend to trust what I see

Often what I see is not consistent with other opinions
And many times my perceptions are wrong, but, even the pros and experts are wrong

watch and read what is available

Most importantly watch college football games. The good 'football players' stand out just as they do when we watch the Giants games. Try and watch an interview or two as well it can give you a sense of the person and their smarts.
In my case, I formulate my general opinion
Big Blue '56 : 1/26/2020 2:45 pm : link
on what positions I feel need urgent upgrading. Then after reading reports from people who I trust and respect, I then will opine with, if what I have been reading on x player(s) is correct, I would be happy if he were taken. Thats the best I can do
I don't watch nearly as much college ball as I used to.

So I'm reduced to reading and listening to the opinions of others who do. That's one reason I don't have any strong opinions on whomever the Giants might draft. You do have to filter out a lot of "noise," but there are still plenty of pundits out there now (thanks to the Internet) whom I do respect and whose opinions I value highly.

So I watch those games. I watch games against the best opponents to see how certain players step up to the best competition. Someone like Devin Bush...man I wanted him with everything I had with our second pick in round one.
I dont bother anymore

I wait to see them in the pros.

I wanted him with the first pick.
What I have learned over the years

not worth putting that much time into the draft. The Giants are going to draft who they want. I still watch the draft and just sit back and relax. I used to buy all the draft books watch videos and all the allstar games only to see us draft a Dline I didn't want or the Giants reach for a player they could have gotten in other rounds. Now I wait for the pick and just read about it online. The last two years have been very interesting seeing where we picked and I for one am glad with both picks.
I watch games, YouTube mockups and the Combine.

yatqb : 1/26/2020 4:17 pm : link
Its valuable to see players against other top players, whether in season or in all star games.

matter what I do my opinion will pale to that of a professional scout. So I read the scouting reports, watch some games and basically get my opinion on a number of players from that. However in the end I usually just root for the guy the Giants pick. What I do is more root for a position than a player, and by that I mean filling weaknesses in the picks for the first 3 or 4 rounds.

high school recruiting - have a friend in the business - and watching the college game in general. Been a hobby for a while actually.

Do a lot of reading, before and during the season, and watching video. And when I decide to watch a game, I'll make sure I know who the likely NFL prospects are and hone in on them.

But I like to keep a mental note of players that show up big in big games (rivalry, conf. champs, bowl games)
I Watch YouTube Highlights Videos...

And tell everyone that I reviewed all the game tapes.

Then I write the names of the players that I like on a piece of paper and refer to it as my draft board.

I follow lots of "draft experts," but I won't base my opinion on their takes.

at a position I would like the giants to draft (usually linebacker every year), watch one YouTube video and pretend to be an expert until Sy knocks said player down a notch when his rankings come out.

Im not a big college football fan but I used to read EVERY single draft magazine before the internet made them moot. Didnt help my case at all though.
I watch college games every now and then,
BlueLou'sBack : 1/27/2020 12:41 am : link
watched lots a couple of years ago (hence the strong conviction about Barkley). When a particular player catches my interest I look for and watch "whole game tape" of said player.

I don't pretend to know many players, and frankly think most - even the expert pundits or perhaps especially them - lie like hell about the breadth and depth of their knowledge.

So I stick to watching a few guys who catch my interest, and try to follow up on those guys.

Recently I've looked at two guys, the obious one Andrew Thomas and the dark horse WR Quintez Cephous of Wisconsin.

I often like a dark horse type that the league finds undraftable.

We all kid ourselves and the pundits do too re the mental makeup of prospects - which is a huge part of NFL success.

In addition to the eye test I do rely a lot on personal reccomendations.

I am fortunate to have long time friends who are somehow related to the draft process.

I have friends who played collegiate football.
They were not good enough to play at the next level, but, they still remained involved in football.

Two are coaches, both in college and the pros, one is a very accomplished agent, another is an orthopedic doctor for for an NFL team, and another is a well known draft analyst.

I do take everything that they say with a grain of salt as they all have some agendas. But they do turn me onto players who I have never heard of.

I watch more college football than NFL on a weekly basis
JonC : 1/27/2020 9:15 am : link
usually 8+ games on the DVR, which the girlfriend always laughs at. With repetition each year you get a feel for the prospects, and whom NYG might prefer. Having played a lot of football growing up, it's easier to understand what you're seeing, how to compare prospects, and how to project it to the NFL versus players.
