NFT: 2020 Grammys

nyjuggernaut2 : 1/26/2020 9:18 pm
Anyone see Camilla Cabello sing a ballad to her father, who was there and crying his eyes out. Being a dad, and thinking about Kobe and his 3 daughters that won’t have him around anymore, that broke me...
Touching moment but...

Nice tribute to Kobe upfront

As tragic as Kobe’s death is today.... it’s a shame the 8 others who died including 2 teenage girls, an accomplished baseball coach who apparently helped develop Judge and McNeil .. and a karate champion aren’t being mourned today too.

There’s one father / daughter that is being held ... look I get it, that’s the way it works - but a lot of lives were lost today and yet Kobe’s is the only one that anyone cares about. Even his daughters Is what it is.

Did they play with their original drummer? I pass his house/island everyday and point it out to my customers. But then heard he hasn't been with the band for a year because he got injured and now the band won't let him back in?

That song by Camila is going to be played to fathers ,during weddings, for the next 20 years. That’s an instant hit song.

You are the barometer for what a grown man is now? Come on kid think before you talk.

When you want to try and put others down like that, go do some push ups or something. It would be so much more productive.

LOL. Now that was good. I can just see a 20-something getting frustrated and dropping to give 20 before lashing out with an "OK Boomer"!!

Good comeback!
It’s not for me. Today’s music, for the most part, is not for me.

So I tried a little bit, wasn’t interested in what I was seeing, and turned the channel. Easy.
What happened to pop music?
BamaBlue : 1/27/2020 9:45 am : link
It seems like the music died somewhere in the very early 90's. There have been occasional hits, but nothing like the 60's through the early 90's... In particular, the musical period from the mid-70's through the 80's was nothing short of amazing.

That's where I'm at. Virtually every "star" and music out there now is very disposable. Watched two plus hours last night and only Ms Keys moved the needle for me. The "talent" considered stars now make me shake my head, it's been that way for a decade and more.

Get off my lawn?

Nail on the head.

American Idol seemed to start the most recent decline (IMO). When every other weeknight there's a show/contest to find the next great talent, things sure do seem to get watered down. Some great finds on these shows, yes, but it's got to be frustrating for those musicians who have toiled for years to make it, and these shows churn out dreck routinely.
A dissent
Jim from Katonah : 1/27/2020 11:08 am : link
I disagree that today’s music is less creative/more disposable and the performers are less talented. It’s a generational thing to say “the new music is not as good” — I clearly remember my jazz-nut father laughing and telling me “no one will be listening to Zeppelin in 30 years” and Rock n Roll was “just a bunch of screaming and yelling.”

It takes a bit of exploring — and maybe getting past a threshold of initial I contrast — to get an ear for the brilliant, genre-bending music of Tyler the Creator, Travis Scott, Future etc — but at least for me, the art and the spirit of revolution and the inspiration of today’s best artists stands up to the music of the past. Next time you have a few minutes,!listen to “New Magic Wand” by Tyler the Creator on headphones ... it fucking rocks.

I remember my dad walking in when I was watching Keith Moon go absolutely berserk in a drug-crazed, drum kit-destroying rampage ... and just muttering “Christ” and walking away. ( I’d like to see a split screen of that w/ the 2020 version featuring Tyler the Creator.) Funny, because his dad did the same to him about Charlie Parker et al. What’s all that racket!

It’s even happening with the 40-plus set and hip hop ... “back in the day, Dr. Dre and Snoop and Nas ... now THAT was real music.”

I found it
Pete in MD : 1/27/2020 12:00 pm : link
entertaining for the most part. Lots of talent being showcased and appropriate tributes to Kobe, being that many in attendance were his personal friends and they were holding the event in his home arena.

I am also definitely either too old or not cool enough to appreciate a few of the performances.

CRinCA : 1/27/2020 12:13 pm : link
Joey has not played with them in months after suffering some sort of minor injuries early last year. He tried to come back recently in order to play the Grammys and at the show on Saturday where the band won their MusicCares award but the band said his skills were not up to snuff.

They argued things out in court last week and the judge ruled in the bands favor. In the end Joey joined the band onstage to receive their award but a stand-in drummer actually played.

All the details are online if you want the full story.

Unfortunately, I missed Gary Clark’s performance and saw two performances that had me immediately turning the channel. Gary is a terrific guitarist.

To have to see it out or sit and listen through whole albums. I kind of let the radio do that initial cull (or friends or whatever) and take it from there. To me i always would rather be fed what people considered good and Judge that. I realize that’s not everyone’s cup of tea but it’s not really an option today since radio has essentially become a defunct platform so many people are not being exposed to songs in the genres they enjoy. To me this results in a larger disconnect than normal since the pop stuff still being played on radio is not always going to be everyone’s cup of tea.

Why?

Well, there are several reasons. (And they're just personal preferences, of course.)

First and foremost, the Grammys (for me) just highlight (and even worse, honor) the dearth of true artistry at the top of the music industry. I mean, when the nominees for "music's highest honor" include the likes of Ariana Grande, Lizzo, Beyoncé, Ed Sheeran, the Jonas Brothers, John Legend, Bon Iver, Rival Sons...? Come on.

While I have my qualms with the Oscars, the Emmys, and the Golden Globes, I do tune in for at least part of them, because I get a sense that they're trying to nominate and award what they believe are the artistic achievements in film and television.

I also cringe at all of those "once in a lifetime performances!" when they cram 15 stars on stage from different eras and musical genres for some trainwreck medley that ends up getting a standing ovation anyway.

And, also, I'm a music snob. :)

Tyler is an amazing talent...considering him and Frank Ocean both came out of Odd Future pretty remarkable.

Yeah, hard to argue with that. But, as to specific artists, there is still brilliance and innovation and art. (Not just in hip hop either — there is a huge library of new music that I’ve been exposed to through an extremely hip family member.) But, since music is subjective, it’s kind of pointless for me to try to convince someone that Tyler the Creator or Travis Scott is brilliant if they don’t like the sound.

Funny how it goes the other way too — I’ve spent a lot of time exposing my teenage kids to Floyd, Zep, Tool and my other favorite bands ... they aren’t digging it anymore than I digged my dad’s Charlie Parker etc.

Mr. Bungle, the Grammys has always been chock full of lightweights. Right smack in the age of Hendrix and Floyd and the Stones etc, lots of “Harper Valley PTAs“ , Captain & Tennilles, and Kenny Loggins types were the headliners.

Hard to draw a lot of conclusions on the current state of music from the Grammys. I wouldn’t want the 80s defined by Kim Carnes and “Bette Davis Eyes.”

Yeah, that's my overall point. It's not a recent thing for me. 15 years ago, I would have said the same.

It doesn't mean the Grammys never acknowledge real artistic achievement in the music industry. They just do it so infrequently -- and while consistently honoring so much superficial trash -- that watching it is a pretty unpleasant experience for me.
