Re LB Corey Littleton, BBV asks, He wouldn’t come cheap, but

Big Blue '56 : 2/6/2020 1:25 pm
would he be worth a big investment?

How long is it now that fans have rightly been complaining about the inability of New York Giants’ linebackers to cover anyone? Far too long, whatever the number of years. How about the idea of turning to free agency for an in-his-prime player who is one of the best coverage linebackers in football in an effort to fix that problem?

The Giants have an opportunity to do that this offseason if they choose to pursue 26-year-old Los Angeles Rams linebacker Cory Littleton.

The basics
Age: 26
Height: 6-foot-3 | Weight: 228
Position: Linebacker
Experience: 4 seasons
2019 stats: Games: 16 | Tackles: 134 | Interceptions: 2 | Sacks: 3.5 | Fumble recoveries: 4 | Passes defensed: 9

I don’t care for PFF, so I left them out. If you’re interested in their opinion, click on the lonk

He's been on my radar for a while

but he may be too pricey and the Giants can't expect to fix all their woes by signing every top free agent
Agreed, but it’s been quite awhile
Big Blue '56 : 2/6/2020 1:50 pm : link
since we had a solid cover guy there
he's legit

I would say go for it

I’m so sick of seeing us get torn apart in the middle of the field every week.

Are the Rams not going to resign him? They are in cap trouble if I remember correctly.

Agreed about the killing we’ve taken in the middle of the field, almost a gimme moving the chains
You need good players
Rudy5757 : 2/6/2020 2:37 pm : link
I dont know much about him in particular but we cant keep avoiding going after players because of the expense. I would rather gamble on a young player than pay top $$ for a 30 or over player. If he is the goods, you pay him and dont worry about it.

If we are able to replace guys that are under performing with a top talent then go for it. With DJ in a cap friendly spot right now, we have the ability to get players. Dont overpay for average and you will be OK.

Assuming he’s healthy and Judge and co., like what they see of him, it would be fine with this fan if they overpaid. We have multiple needs and areas to fill, not the least of which is to finally and successively protect the middle. I’m sick and tired of getting burned.
I feel like we are in kind of a unique spot this

year in terms of our roster. I don’t remember the last time we had so much youth on our roster, many of which are guys from the top 3 rounds.

I see a lot of posts on here about how we have all of these holes to fill. Agreed to an extent. We definitely have holes at offensive tackle, center, and edge.

But aside from that we have all of these young corners, young defensive lineman, solid WR’s, solid offensive guards. You almost have to give some of these guys like Beal, Baker, Ballentine, BJ Hill, Connelly, Love, etc. a chance to play because if you get nervous and replace them after one or two seasons you may be missing out on what could be a terrific player with additional experience. Especially when you consider that a new coaching staff may get more out of them than Bettcher.
I kind of like the idea of partially subsidizing the signing

of Littleton by cutting Ogletree. Makes me feel I'm getting a deal.

Littleton vs Schobert?
Platos : 2/6/2020 4:16 pm : link
i think Schobert is better.
What about drafting Simmons
SirLoinOfBeef : 2/6/2020 4:19 pm : link
Especially with a slight trade down (7-10) perhaps?

Measurable's look similar. Save the money for a pass rusher or free safety.

I appreciate it.
For the money gimme Nick Kwiatkoski
j_rud : 2/6/2020 5:35 pm : link
No, hes not the same caliber athlete as Littleton. But he'll command much less money and is good enough to win with. Hes the kind of FA I like to see them target: right age, right price, and an ascending player (played well and put up good numbers in relief of an injured Danny Trevathan).
One of my targets in free agency
SLIM_ : 2/6/2020 5:53 pm : link
I list an ILB as high as a pass rusher. I also think that the defense has a lot of younger players but needs a leader out there. Both Ogletree and Bethea were at the positions to provide that but sucked real hard.

Littleton is scheme versatile. Would line up at ILB in a 3-4, weakside linebacker in a 4-3 and would be a 3 down player. His run defense is not great but with our investments up front (Tomlinson, Hill, Lawrence, and keeping Williams), we should be able to get by.

You also can't count on Connelly as he played very little and coming off injury. We need to sign a vet linebacker.

I'm looking to trade down in the draft and get more picks. I'm not opposed to paying for Littleton AND drafting Simmons.

I like this.

I think the Giants should be bargain shopping ILB’s in FA, not paying top dollar for a name.

Use the big money on OL and pass rushers.
As a fan, here’s MY bottom line:
Big Blue '56 : 2/6/2020 6:38 pm : link
I too want to save money to help fortify elsewhere. BUT, If CL is one of, if not, the best in the business as it pertains to covering the middle of the field, SPEND THE MONEY! I again say, I am sick and tired of getting shredded as we have for so many years. Sure, if you can find someone comparable at a nice savings, I’m all in. BUT, I do not want any LB unless he can FINALLY make a difference protecting the middle.

I’d rather have a LB who’s physical in the run game and can blitz. Especially with the way the quality teams are winning football games now.
Pay for pass rushers and OTs
JonC : 2/6/2020 8:43 pm : link
I'd also be looking for physical, downhill players because that's what 3-4 needs on its edges, and value inside at ILB.

Will, I hear ya buddy. But dammit, the middle is what’s killing us virtually every game, for years and years..I’ll sacrifice something in the run game to finally get some help where we’ve been hurt the most, especially during crucial times.
And, btw?

If Simmons is that guy, even if he’s lacking in some areas, sign me up.

Simmons is a very good cover LB. He is an excellent blitzer and has good balls skills too. I’d rather sign a top pass rusher and draft Simmons.

If he can solve our middle problems or greatly improve it, I’d be thrilled
I hope we trade down
NYFootballGiants : 2/6/2020 9:52 pm : link
and get Kenneth Murray. We may even be able to trade down and still get Simmons. They will both be interesting to watch at the combine.

I get it, but he’s going to cost an arm and a leg. Hard to justify for a guy who isn’t a game changer at the LB position.

Hell yeah. This is one guy I hope the Giants target.

No, he's not the athlete that Littleton is, but he's tough, smart, has good instincts, and when he hits you, you stay hit. Watched him a lot at WVU, where he played Safety and all three LB spots. If you really want to "punch people in the nose for 60 minutes," you sign this kid to do it.
