If Chase Young can have an LT/Watt TYPE impact

Big Blue '56 : 2/7/2020 12:11 pm
for his team (not comparing them), would you trade up for him, assuming Washington was willing to do so at the right price and what would that price entail, iyo?

Having never seen him play, I have no opinion, but for those who have, would he be enough of a disruptor to merit what it would take to get him?

I am not of course suggesting this, but Iíd be interested in the comments from those who would consider it.
given that the Giants got their QB
GiantNatty : 2/7/2020 12:16 pm : link
without having to mortgage the future to get him, and that they desperately need a stud on defense, trading up to get him could make a lot of sense.
Imo, he is nowhere near the same type of player

Agreed. My only reference was to how impactful could he be in an overall D.
I haven't been impressed by what I've seen.
Rico : 2/7/2020 12:19 pm : link
I've only watched him in two games, but they were both big ones (Michigan and the playoffs), and he didn't do much.

Also, I've seen him in an interview, and he came across as kind of a self promoting jerk.

Let the Redskins have him!
No.
Klaatu : 2/7/2020 12:22 pm : link
We need offensive linemen just as much, if not more, than an impact defender. Sacrificing picks to get the latter at the expense of the former is counter-productive, in my opinion. In all likelihood we lost out on the chance to draft Young, so let's get over that and move on with a realistic approach to improving our defense.
Too many holes to target one player
George from PA : 2/7/2020 12:22 pm : link
But he would fit in great with the Giants needs

But so would a corner, LB, FS, T, C etc
Chase Young is a stud
Rjanyg : 2/7/2020 12:22 pm : link
I don't expect the Giants to land him.

A guy I want you all to check out is K'Lavon Chaisson from LSU.

He is very young and only played 2 full season so his stats won't blow you away but boy does this kid have a bright future. He is relentless and flys all over the field. He is physical and versatile.

He has a high football IQ and is a leader. He is moving up draft boards.

6'4" 250 lbs. He will probably blow up the combine.

In a small trade back I would be very happy with him in a NYG uniform.
It's a tough call because we are living in the now
figgy2989 : 2/7/2020 12:22 pm : link
With all the holes this teams has, you need all the draft capital you can get, especially now that you have the QB in place.

I will say though that you happened to choose the two worst games you could have possibly watched him in this year.

He had 16.5 sacks through his first 9 games. Then Michigan (who had a very good OL) doubled him (sometimes triple-teamed) on literally every single 3rd down (which is generally considered "sack" down, and hence Young had 0 sacks).

In the following game, which was the conference championship game, Wisconsin followed Michigan's exact game plan and Young again had 0 sacks, but he actually still had a fairly decent impact on the game and had a lot of "almosts" in getting to the QB. The mistake that most people make is they say "he struggled against better competition in Michigan, Wisconsin, Clemson." No, he struggled a game plan that was formulated to eliminate him. He actually had 5 TFL and 4 sacks against Wisconsin just 3 weeks prior to that conference championship game against them! That was literally his stat line. So clearly it was the game plan by the offense, not Young sucking against "better" competition in Wisconsin.

The thing is, Ohio St. still won comfortably over Michigan and Wisconsin and probably should have beaten Clemson, and all of that was in part because the offense spent so much body capital stopping Young that the rest of the defense had much increased production. If Lawrence doesn't inexplicably break free for like a 70 yard TD run (and other big run) Ohio St. wins that game too. Not to make excuses for Ohio St., but my point being that Young had an insane amount of production in the first 9 games and then teams made a point to say "if we're going to lose it's not going to be because that guy takes over the game". The thing is, a lot of casual fans who wanted to see what Young was all about didn't really watch him until the more highly promoted games (i.e. Ohio St. vs. Michigan, the Big 10 championship, and the CFP).
We've already thrown a pick in the trash
Metnut : 2/7/2020 12:33 pm : link
with the Williams deal, so our arsenal of picks to trade is diminished. Given the amount of holes in this team, the fact that a division rival is unlikely to deal with us, and the outlook for next year (solid chance of us picking top 10 again in 2021), I think we should only trade down and not up.

I'd have loved to add Young, but the wins versus Washington and Miami at the end of the year simultaneously saved Gettleman's job and prevented that from happening.

The best we can hope for is a trade-down to a QB needy team, add a few studs to the D via free agency, and hope our pretty promising looking coaching staff is able to get more out of the roster. Trading 3-4 picks to move up to #2 could set us back for a long time if Young is a bust or only "solid"
Had my heart for the Giants to take him in late November and
DonnieD89 : 2/7/2020 12:33 pm : link
early December, but we all know how that changed. At this point, I do not think he warrants the value to trade up to acquire. We have to utilize the value of the #4 pick through other means and use it wisely, whether it is taking best available player or trading down.
JJ Watt was taken with the 11th pick
Doug in MA : 2/7/2020 12:39 pm : link
Maybe the Giants could trade down and get the next JJ Watt?
If he is guaranteed
Sy'56 : 2/7/2020 12:44 pm : link
to have a LT/Watt impact - yes you trade up. No brainer.

But you can't guarantee anything - so....you're back to where you started
As the roster stands now, I would not.
rnargi : 2/7/2020 12:44 pm : link
We already traded our third, and it will cost us next years' first to move up and probably more than that. Sans UFA upgrades at multiple positions (WR, S, ILB, TE, ORT, OLT, among other areas of need), I can't see giving up assets. Now if they land a stud OLT and a stud ILB and other upgrades, then explore the deal if it's not too costly. I still believe you build through the draft, and I just can't see giving up too many assets to take Young.
Imagine if they had an extra third and fifth to burn

And because there are so many holes to fill on this roster, I think more picks are better. I think Young is the best player in the draft and would absolutely love it if he fell to us at #4, but I would not give up additional picks to move up and get him.

I like him as well. That said, we're likely picking @ the 4 spot.
How does he compare to Nick Bosa?
Rudy5757 : 2/7/2020 1:22 pm : link
I havent seen enough of him to make that call. In my opinion Bosa was the best player on the 49ers D and impacted almost every play or at least had to be accounted for every play. The Giants dont have anyone that scares you on D which basically allows an O to attack anywhere.

If he falls to us yes take him. Seems like a pipe dream but we need too many players to trade top picks for. The Leonard Williams trade was a steep price for no reason. That was a bad trade, lets not make another.
If he grades out as high or higher
JerryNicklebag : 2/7/2020 1:23 pm : link
than Bosa did then the answer is yes, go get him.

If that takes giving up a 1 next year, so be it.

I'm not sure if you and I have discussed this before but I agree with all of this. Young is a great DE prospect. Hard to say anyone is a can't miss, but CY is close.

But I'm really with you on Chaisson. There is some serious upside there. With a bit more refining, he's got double digit sack ability written all over him...
Let's revisit that Williams trade once free agency opens
cosmicj : 2/7/2020 1:24 pm : link
and we see that there are literally no good players available.
History argues against picking Young.
Lowell : 2/7/2020 1:26 pm : link
In the past 15 drafts the following pass rushing DE's/Edge rushers were taken in the top five. Von Miller and Chris Long are the only ones to win in Super Bowls and it's debatable about how significant Long's contributions were to his teams' victories. The majority have had relatively pedestrian careers and the few that lived up to their high draft selection didn't significantly improve their teams during their careers. Some were big disappointments.

Clellin Ferrell
Nick Bosa
Bradley Chubb
Myles Garrett
Solomon Thomas
Joey Bosa
Dante fowler
J. Clowney
Kahlil Mack
Dion Jordan
Ezekial Ansah
Von Miller
Aaron Curry
Chris Long
Gaines Adams
WMario Williams

My point is that although the Giants could benefit greatly from Young they might be much better served by trading down if there is a qb available at #4 that is in demand.

Jadeveon Clowney was the canít miss generational defender
Ben in Tampa : 2/7/2020 1:27 pm : link
In 2014, and then Khalil Mack went 4 picks later.
Yes - I would do it.
Dnew15 : 2/7/2020 1:27 pm : link
The biggest problem is that is would cost extra to move up to #2 b/c it's Washington and that's only IF they would answer the call.

Washington has a lot more holes on its team than DL. I think they're going to take Young - and the Giants better figure out what do with their OL...and quick b/c that DL is going to be scary good.
LT was highly regarded...
HoustonGiant : 2/7/2020 1:33 pm : link
but people weren't calling him the GOAT, or "can't miss".

Actually, the offense was terrible, and the thought was they'd go that way.
Young is the best prospect in the draft

but he's not LT. Redskins aren't going to trade with us, it's moot.

Saw this 1st on twitter: Not saying I agree or disagree. But, how many times do you sit there on draft night and say, "I never saw that coming!" The lying season is coming!!!!

Which player has the biggest divide between media perception and the actual opinion of the scouting community?

There are a couple, but the main one is Ohio State defensive end Chase Young, as many in the scouting community feel he is overrated. Young has upside but is not a ďsure thingĒ compared to Nick Bosa, something teams really prefer in a top-three selection.
More info on Chase Young!
edavisiii : 2/7/2020 1:54 pm : link
From the bigger article: "I had spoken with somebody in the New York Giants, and they questioned why it seems that Chase Young doesnít show up in the big game. People talk about pressures, but he didnít have the impact you would expect a guy like Chase Young to have.Ē

Hey bw,

Yeah I think we have discussed Chaisson before. I have been reading so much about him and he is so intriguing. I have seen videos of him working on hand technique, His hips are very fluid. Great at TE stunts and he has a few moves including a nasty spin move. He looks like he could put 5-10 pounds on and still be very quick. Speed is what this team needs right now. If we don't land a very good DE/OLB/EDGE in free agency I would serious love to see DG draft him. He is explosive.

Impact? J.J. Watt, when healthy dominated his position for years..Again, Iím talking a huge impact on a team like L.T. with us, Watt with the Texans..I stated in my very first sentence that I WAS NOT COMPARING THEM, just the RELATIVE impact on the teams they played for. L.T. was arguably the best player ever, on either side of the ball..

I talk about it everyday. What a horrendous move. He burnt the 69th and 150th picks. The worst trade in history and regardless of what else he has done it was a fireable offense. How do the owners let this happen? If you liked him then sign him in free agency. The worst trade in Giant history. It doesn't even matter if he turns out to be good. We could have had him for nothing. You said it perfect. Another run stopping defensive lineman who is a free agent. We needed those picks so much more than him for the last 8 games of last season. Horrendous..horrendous trade.
