Super Bowl Champs and the pass rush.

XBRONX : 2/8/2020 8:44 am
Without looking, anybody care to guess where KC ranked pressuring the passer. This is for people who think their is a magic formula for winning the big one.
Looking at overall numbers doesn't tell the full story.

Like our 2007 season, our defense got better and better as the year went on.

“After leading the NFL in pass-rushing grade last season, but losing Justin Houston and Dee Ford and changing defensive schemes, there were a lot of questions as to how, when applicable, the Chiefs would put heat on the quarterback. Clark was acquired from Seattle; Emmanuel Ogbah, Alex Okafor, and Khalen Saunders came in as well; and the defense did not turn in the kind of performance it did a season ago rushing the passer, earning only the 29th-best pass-rushing grade in the league. Jones did his part, generating 58 total pressures. The Chiefs were more productive at the linebacker position as well, with Wilson and Reggie Ragland each generating over 10 pressures. However, injuries to Ogbah and Okafor left third-year pro Tanoh Kpassagnon as the third-leading pressure producer on the team with only 31 (last year three Chiefs had over 50, and four over 35).

That said, we know pass rush generally doesn’t matter as much as coverage does, and quarterbacks control their pressure rates more than anything. Tom Brady neutralized the Chiefs defense in the AFC Championship Game a year ago by getting the ball out quickly and targeting what were (at the time) weak members of the Chiefs secondary. In their upcoming matchup against Houston, they should be able to pester Deshaun Watson enough to play good enough pass defense to get them into a matchup with Baltimore, which presents its own challenges.”

There is a NFL debate going on about pressure vs coverage

That being said I’d take my chances with the 49ers DL or the Redskins DL with potentially Chase Young, right now the Giants have no proven strengths in defense, even run defense who should be at least be respectable given resources invested on the DL and yet wasn’t consistently strong.

In the AFC Champ and SB definitely helped.

Don't need a HOF pass rush playing against Tannehill & Garopollo
49ers win that game

if Mahomes doesn't do "Mahomes" things late in the game.

A traditional pocket passer gets destroyed by the 49ers pass rush. Bosa alone could have been the difference. He beat Fisher all game.
Things changed in the playoffs

They got the pressure and quite a bit of it.. Thats how they won the SB.. Pressuring the QB is still the most important thing you can do on defense.. I doubt one little cherry picked stat can change that fact..

Then again you wouldn't have faced KC if no Mahomes.
The Chiefs

You have to be great at something and good or solid everywhere else. Could be passing, running or little of both. Gotta get pressure on the qb when needed. Sack numbers can be misleading. The 90 giants didn’t get a million sacks but they made life miserable for opposing offenses, including the qb. More than one way to skin a cat.

Then you need to get a little lucky unless you’re belichick who even in a down year wins 12 games.

Bingo. I can’t believe there are people out there who question mahomes winning mvp. ANY other qb gets his ass kicked up and down the field that night. Mahomes hung 30 plus on a terrific defense and team. The guy is the best player in football. He’s aaron rodgers on speed, in a good way.
I don't know why we always want to have discussions like this

I don't know the numbers, but let's say the Chiefs didn't have an elite pass rush. If you're planning on using the Chiefs' as an example/blueprint for how to win the super bowl, then you better also plan on having a once-in-a-generation talent at QB, the best receiving TE in the league, the fastest receiving corps in the NFL, and a HOF genius offensive mind running the show. Unless you're planning on having all of those things, it's entirely pointless to look at the Chiefs as an example of anything.

I will say this: I don't remember the exact record, but in the large majority of super bowls where a top 5 defense takes on a top 5 offense, the defense wins. But there are always exceptions that prove any rule, and as we all know the Chiefs' offense was pretty much one of the most exceptional exceptions in the history of the league.
