Ironically, the Knicks may be playing too good for their own good right now, so trading off bodies makes sense. Most of the players pushing them toward a few wins won't be around next year, so it isn't as if the wins are helping them "grow." Payton, Gibson, Bullock and Ellington were a combined +29 on Thursday. The rest of the team was a combines -27.
Who in that group is going to be retained? I guess maybe Payton, who has improved as he got further away from his injury. Link - ( New Window )

Bullock will be retained if for no other reason than his cap number is cheap next year which could make him an attractive trade chip.
"In Thursday’s deal with the Clippers, the Knicks didn’t want to take on rookies Terance Mann and Mfiondu Kabengel in exchange for Marcus Morris because they didn’t want to immediately waive players. That indicates the Knicks either wanted to keep the veterans for leadership or prefer to save money in a buyout scenario."
Not sure what to make of that. I know Greg on LI was in favor of getting Kabengel and he seems like a player the Knicks could have used in a rebuild.

Payton is a good nba point guard when he’s healthy. And he’s definitely healthy right now. Did we finally find a point guard? I don’t think the Knicks need to go all in on this guy but Payton is playing himself into future plans with these performances. No way in hell am I letting him go anywhere this offseason.

in the right situation surrounded by shooters. He knows how to run the offense, get in the paint and get the ball to everyone in the right spots. Obviously we don't have th shooters now but I'd keep him and try and add shooters in the off season. Obviously if we can draft an elite PG we do it and /or sign a guy like VanVleet but Elfie can be a part of this team next year.
Miller’s competent coaching, is there ARE pieces here. Payton has a role, Bullock could too.. For this team to get anywhere several things HAVE to happen
1. R.J. HAS to develop into a legit #2 or 3 on a championship team.
2. Robinson and Knox news to develop into viable young rotation players
3. MOST importantly- they have to find #1. The bonafide star to lead the franchise.

I think knicks trade for a star this offseason to pair with barrett then sign another in 2021..
should be called Mr Turnover. Five so far. The guys blows handling the ball.
It's crazy that he plays this 'point forward' role - there's no need for it and he's not good at it. I thought that was going to go away when Fiz left but apparently not.
but Payton found a few different ways to blow the lead - starting with the fast break layup attempt with under two minutes left and an eight-point lead.
I agree. Terrible call there, but then again, Knicks had 8 point lead with about a minutes and a half left there in OT and let it slip away. Inexcusable
Knicks got a big ol' screwjob there with no vaseline. That really couldn't be reviewed?
Say what you want about Miller, but if Knox, Frank, Barrett and DSJ Â
aren’t getting better under him, what good is he? Who cares if we are barely winning/losing against the Hawks when Bullocks and Ellington are playing 35 min plus?
It fucking blows that, due to luck or incompetence, we are going to blow 3 picks in a row. And by playing mostly vets this year we are going to be picking 5th or 6th in a two player draft.
Rant over, carry on.

First off with the new lottery system there is no tanking..
2nd barrett was playing really well before the ankle injury so he has improved..
3rd sometimes young players just are not very good, usually if a young player in his 3rd year is trash, they dont play, no team sticks with a young player if they trash after their 2nd year..
people have this weird fascination that playing time equals developing, if player is struggling you dont give him more minutes
Heat and Knicks expected to be suitors of Danilo Gallinari in next free agency
1 year deal with an option, sure
and if they trade for a star
if you read the article it sounds like pure speculation based on the fact that they have cap space and Gallinari is a CAA client. The exact quote is
Quote:
Another team that could be a potential suitor for Gallinari is the New York Knicks with CAA’s Leon Rose expected to take over as team president. After trading Marcus Morris Sr. for Maurice Harkless and draft pick compensation, the Knicks have plenty of cap space to use this summer. Rose and Gallinari’s agent, Michael Tellem of CAA Sports, have worked closely together during their time at the agency.
we all know that, leon rose and wes are not going slow rebuild, they valued picks rather than players because they hold more value..
The question is who? That first round pick only has more value than a 2019 first round pick before a selection is made so you need to plan on using it then before the draft. Unless they're making a run at John Wall or Chris Paul (yuck on both), it doesn't seem like a big name star will become available via trade anytime soon.

Beal, lillard possibly...
Simmons or Embiid could become available if they get knocked out early..

Hard to believe Knox, Frank and DSJ were all top 10 picks - three terrible players. I don't think Miller or anyone else can salvage those three. Frank in a limited bench role on a good team can be useful.
We shouldn't be married to any of these young players going forward. Memphis has Ja and Jackson, Phoenix has Booker and Ayton, Atlanta has Trae and Collins - what do we have? RJ and Mitch? A guard who can't shoot and a big who can't score outside of lobs and put-backs? We're about as close to an empty cupboard as an NBA team can get. I'm very much in favor of working the trade market aggressively.

I do expect Simmons or Embiid to be traded. I think if constructed properly with enough athletes and shooting you can build a great team around Simmons.

and not having the benefit of a training camp and preseason to install his own system I think Miller has done a very good job. I hope the Knicks give him a chance to coach next season but it's probably not going to happen which is a shame because the guy can coach.

I think he's been ok, yet I wonder if he just looks good because Fizdale was so awful?
Heat and Knicks expected to be suitors of Danilo Gallinari in next free agency
If the Knicks sign Gallinari, I should either be happy in that they've finally come to their senses, or miserable when I consider the years wasted with Melo who brought the offense to a screeching halt every time he touched the ball.

yes it was melo's fault..
Because keeping that team together would of been so much better
Given where the team is right now, I wouldn't mind giving him a two-year deal and just taking it a year at a time while the roster is built up. Dolan's already paying Fizdale NOT to coach the team, so it seems silly for him to commit to another big name/big price tag coach when the team is so bad, but it's his money not mine. I bet Miller stays on JVG's staff, if he's the choice.

Miller worked on Van Gundys usa staff, so i am sure if Miller wanted to Van Gundy would keep him
Yeah I'm not nearly as excited about JVG as others will be. Â
It'll be a fun story for a little while, but there are serious questions about whether he can adapt to today's style of play. I'd still prefer him to Thibs, Calipari and Jackson though. Hopefully we expand our search.
"We beat on, boats against the current, borne ceaselessly into the past..."
Gallo/Bertans/Harris/Morris/Bogdanovic - just sign one good shooter. Â

I’m so sick of people acting like the 98 bulls were broken up when the Knicks traded for Melo. Gallinari has been a really good player of late, but with Denver he was a disappointment for years. Injured and didn’t put all together.
And the Melo trade wasn’t this lopsided awful trade.
Gallinari
Wilson Chandler( who the Knicks couldn’t have resigned if they wanted to sign a max player)
Mozgov
Felton
1st round pick and a pick swap
That’s really not a lot to give up for what they got out of Melo. It’s a tired and incorrect take to say the Knicks got “fleeced”.
If you don't already, I'd recommend following KnicksFanTV on YouTube and other social media. The two hosts - CP and J. Ellis - do a great job with post-game shows and other content, including interviews with draft analysts and Knicks reporters (Marc Berman and Tommy Beer have been on a few times). It's far better than anything the NY media or even MSG provides, and they're not total homers either. Anyway, that's my PSA for the day.
initial plan is really Thibs and/or JVG then he's worse than I thought. I fear it's going to be more of the same at MSG for quite some time. Zero desire or commitment to just hire smart people and let them build a team.

My fears as well. I love Van Gundy and he knows a hell of lot more about basketball than the people who run the Knicks, but it just feels like a look back move. And he hasn’t coached since 2006 I believe.
I definitely see them making major trades this offseason. Don’t see 60 year old Leon Rose having the patience for a multi-year rebuild. Hell be making trades to try to get good quickly. Hopefully it works. I still don’t understand why they didn’t wait until the offseason and make the top GMs say no to you.
can be creative. He's organized plenty of Knicks moves to get his players paid. I just think that this smacks of a weird conflict of interest.
Sure, he's hired by the Knicks, but do we really trust that he's not going to put the interests of CAA and his players above the teams? I don't know. If he's fired, do you think he's not going to go right back to CAA and get a number of his old clients back?
Feels like the NBA would have regulations in place for something like this.

A player agent going to run a team is not something new..
he has to decertify and get all of his clients signed to new agents..
It's a relatively new trend. I think just Golden State and LA have done it right?
And just because they decertify, doesn't mean that he isn't looking out for his guys.
Have you seen a list of his clients? How many of these could present a true conflict of interest that would arise in the next year or two? Link - ( New Window )

so you thibk he is going to take the job and basically ehh fuck the knicks i am just going to look out for my former clients who he probably wont get back?
has a lot of power within the Knicks, almost like him and Rose will be equal, him on the marketing and branding side and rose on the basketball side but will work together...

buying a player out is usually a favor to the agent, plus you get him to waive the 1 million guaranteed for next year
Ironically, the Knicks may be playing too good for their own good right now, so trading off bodies makes sense.

Can we buy out Ellington in between quarters?
Two quick fouls for Mitch. Can’t even stay out of foul trouble off the bench. Time to learn how to play basketball, big fella.

he is to slow to make subs and leaves players in to long..
my only complaint, no reason Mitch should still be on the bench and portis should be in the game
for some reason he has never stuck anywhere, always got looks but never stuck
i am keeping payton, bullock, gibson and harkless..
portis and ellington definitely gone
and yet he can completely control the game with his playmaking, for a guy who cant shoot he knows how to get into the paint and create..
he runs the offense lerfectly and doesnt turn the ball over..

agree.
because he wears a knicks uniform and they are in atlanta..

What does that mean? I mean he's not going to be traded until when? June at the earliest?

Heat and Knicks expected to be suitors of Danilo Gallinari in next free agency
If the Knicks sign Gallinari, I should either be happy in that they've finally come to their senses, or miserable when I consider the years wasted with Melo who brought the offense to a screeching halt every time he touched the ball.

It's a relatively new trend. I think just Golden State and LA have done it right?
And just because they decertify, doesn't mean that he isn't looking out for his guys.

Have you seen a list of his clients? How many of these could present a true conflict of interest that would arise in the next year or two?
