Portis
Jon in NYC : 2/8/2020 2:43 pm : link
can ask for whatever he wants, he's about to be a solid player on an 18 mil expiring deal. They should keep him for trade bait.
Calling Portis
MookGiants : 2/8/2020 2:48 pm : link
a solid player is a stretch, and that is being kind.
Portiis has a team option for next season
Vanzetti : 2/8/2020 2:54 pm : link
No reason to buy Him out. Just do t pick up the option

buying a player out is usually a favor to the agent, plus you get him to waive the 1 million guaranteed for next year
Ellington looking, too.
manh george : 2/8/2020 2:58 pm : link
Link.

Ironically, the Knicks may be playing too good for their own good right now, so trading off bodies makes sense. Most of the players pushing them toward a few wins won't be around next year, so it isn't as if the wins are helping them "grow." Payton, Gibson, Bullock and Ellington were a combined +29 on Thursday. The rest of the team was a combines -27.

Who in that group is going to be retained? I guess maybe Payton, who has improved as he got further away from his injury.

Bullock will be retained if for no other reason than his cap number is cheap next year which could make him an attractive trade chip.
from the Berman article:
Del Shofner : 2/8/2020 3:05 pm : link
"In Thursday’s deal with the Clippers, the Knicks didn’t want to take on rookies Terance Mann and Mfiondu Kabengel in exchange for Marcus Morris because they didn’t want to immediately waive players. That indicates the Knicks either wanted to keep the veterans for leadership or prefer to save money in a buyout scenario."

Not sure what to make of that. I know Greg on LI was in favor of getting Kabengel and he seems like a player the Knicks could have used in a rebuild.

Buying out portis
nygiants16 : 2/8/2020 3:39 pm : link
allows you to play smaller off the bench with harkless at the 4 and knox at the 3, opens up the pick and roll with smith and mitch..

picks are always more valuablr then young potential players, Knicks are trying to accumalate as many assets as they can for a trade..

a future first will always be morr valued by teams
Bullock, Gibson and Peyton should be retained

Or just not playing him and holding onto him does the same.
Embarrassed to admit I’m watching tonight’s game.

Down 11 after one to a Pistons team without Drummond, Griffin and Kennard.

Can we buy out Ellington in between quarters?

Two quick fouls for Mitch. Can’t even stay out of foul trouble off the bench. Time to learn how to play basketball, big fella.

and people will still complain he is not starting
you know its funny
nygiants16 : 2/8/2020 7:57 pm : link
everyone screams ans yells how the young guys need to play more, show me the team that plays crappy young players after their 2nd year?

Teams usually give up on players after 2 years
Yeah I don’t have much of an issue with playing time.
bceagle05 : 2/8/2020 8:08 pm : link
RJ starts, and Mitch has only himself to blame for the foul trouble. Beyond that, no one has earned much of anything.

At the time, it was reported that had team options for next year. But Hoopshype shows them with guaranteed contracts for next year

Anyone know the real story?

he is to slow to make subs and leaves players in to long..

my only complaint, no reason Mitch should still be on the bench and portis should be in the game

Payton is a good nba point guard when he’s healthy. And he’s definitely healthy right now. Did we finally find a point guard? I don’t think the Knicks need to go all in on this guy but Payton is playing himself into future plans with these performances. No way in hell am I letting him go anywhere this offseason.

and yet he can completely control the game with his playmaking, for a guy who cant shoot he knows how to get into the paint and create..

he runs the offense lerfectly and doesnt turn the ball over..
I agree
XBRONX : 2/8/2020 10:00 pm : link
about Paytons passing and ball handling. Assist to turnover rate is very good.
13-17 since miller took over
nygiants16 : 2/8/2020 10:02 pm : link
but Fizdale was scapegoated..

Knicks better hurry uo and finalize leonrose as president before Dolan rehires Mills
Portis and Ellington seemed like
bceagle05 : 2/8/2020 10:25 pm : link
the most ridiculous of the FA signings right from the start. That’s the $20+ million that should’ve been rented out on the trade market for a pick.

Portis is so annoying to watch. Just a dumb player.
Payton can absolutely be a starting NBA PG
Stu11 : 2/9/2020 12:48 am : link
in the right situation surrounded by shooters. He knows how to run the offense, get in the paint and get the ball to everyone in the right spots. Obviously we don't have th shooters now but I'd keep him and try and add shooters in the off season. Obviously if we can draft an elite PG we do it and /or sign a guy like VanVleet but Elfie can be a part of this team next year.
Payton with be an excellent backup point guard
Chris L. : 2/9/2020 6:48 am : link
on a real good playoff team. We still need to draft or sign our front line PG but every real good team needs two.
What they’re showing under
Dave on the UWS : 2/9/2020 12:08 pm : link
Miller’s competent coaching, is there ARE pieces here. Payton has a role, Bullock could too.. For this team to get anywhere several things HAVE to happen
1. R.J. HAS to develop into a legit #2 or 3 on a championship team.
2. Robinson and Knox news to develop into viable young rotation players
3. MOST importantly- they have to find #1. The bonafide star to lead the franchise.
Knicks up 10 early in Atlanta.
bceagle05 : 2/9/2020 6:25 pm : link
Bullock finally heating up from three.
Randle 10 pts, 8 boards

I think knicks trade for a star this offseason to pair with barrett then sign another in 2021..

Barrett becomes your number 3 next to 2 stars
