NFT: Twins pull out of Betts trade

Saquads26 : 2/8/2020 3:23 pm
The Twins no longer plan to complete their portion of the proposed three-team trade that would send Mookie Betts to the Dodgers, according to La Velle E. Neal III of the Star Tribune. As part of the trade, the Twins were to send right-hander Brusdar Graterol to the Red Sox, receiving Kenta Maeda in return. However, after the Red Sox balked at Graterolís medical reports, they requested another prospect from the Twins.

John Henry has been a very successful owner.

That said, the Yankees have been positioning themselves to avoid this type of situation. What a mess, and very tone deaf to leave a homegrown player as great as Mookie Betts in limbo like this.
This offseason has been truly glorious.

Sorry to see it go.
Apparently the Twins donít feel compelled to do whatever

the Red Sox need them to do, unlike the Dodgers
This is just a business transaction.

The Twins had access to Brusdar Graterol's full medical records before this trade. The acquisition led to the Dodgers and Red Sox having access to this information. Obviously the Red Sox have a different interpretation of Graterol's medicals, but the real story is if there is disagreement on them between the Dodgers and Red Sox. This is going to end up being a chapter or two in a good book on baseball.

I love the way Mookie Betts plays the game. Sorry to bceagle and other Red Sox fans. They need to move on from this and get Devers and hopefully Xander locked up.

Alex Anthopolous must be LOVING this. Last April the Braves signed Ronald Acuna Jr. to 8yrs/$100m.
Honestly the Sox were getting fleeced

This probably now means they get better prospects from the Dodgers, pay less of Priceís salary, or hold out for a better offer. Bummer
J.D. Davis and Andres Gimenez for Mookie Betts.

Come on BVW, make it happen. Hell, I'd even throw in Shervyen Newton. Because I'm feeling that generous.

Sox signed Bogaerts last year to a 6 year extension which locks him up for 7 years through 2025 at $132 million. A VERY team friendly signing so he is "locked up".
My apologies on the Xander Bogaerts mention.

I don't understand how the Red Sox are getting fleeced?

Alex Verdugo and Brusdar Graterol are MLB-ready and under team control. An OF and SP(or so they thought) as replacements starting this year. That's a big win for the Red Sox, as they would have two major pieces contributing to their 2020 team that would be outperforming their contracts. We've seen the importance of this when Graterol medicals had him projected as an elite RP, which don't have the IP and opportunities to outperform their contracts like a SP.

Yes, you want to see Mookie Betts play his entire career with the Boston Red Sox, but there has been a series of decisions that have led to this point. Some of the bigger deals have been mentioned, but Steve Pearce was re-signed to 1yr/$6.25m two weeks after the 2018 World Series win. This past offseason, Jackie Bradley Jr. could have been non-tendered, but instead makes $11m this coming season.

If the Red Sox did sign Mookie Betts to a long-term contract at this point, he won't outperform it through the entirety of it. Sooner or later they would have had to target deals like this with position players and SP under team control.
F*** the Red Sox

Getting out of this trade and making lame excuses is BS. MLB should investigate this. They should have known all about that Twinkies pitcher before the trade was made. This is lame and makes them and baseball look bad.

Teams don't get to see the real medical records until a trade is authorized. So what would MLB investigate? That after reviewing the records the Red Sox found damaged goods(more than realized) and nixed the deal? Not uncommon.

TJ surgery occurs in what 33% of pitchers or some crazy number?
Yeah, so they knew he had injuries, until you actually see what the MDs finding are, you don't know the extent. It is why they always put into trade agreements subject to medical review. Also, what other medical issues are there with that player that are kept internal, i.e., degenerative knee condition. Suppose he has knee joint arthritis, but not enough to prevent him from pitching, yet - but likely down the road.(this is just an example not a statement)
There are plenty of players with existing conditions(Dellin Betances' shoulder impingement that he has had for 5 years) that don't cause problems now, that can cause problems later. How about Tanaka's partially torn UCL? How about while that UCL has not torn, the Yanks see some additional tearing but don't make it public, trade him to LA, but the Dodgers see the true medicals and say no thanks. Everyone knows he has a partially torn UCL, but everyone(fictitious) does not know it's true condition.

Until the team medical staff sees the real condition of the player they can only hope he is healthy.

they pivot to the Padres. I didn't like the Dodgers getting their own Stanton trade where they are already the best team in the NL and have a loaded system.
Twins back in?
FearTheHippo : 2/9/2020 4:03 pm : link
Ken Rosenthal is reporting that trade talks are "progressing" and that the Twins are still involved.

Looks like it might break down into two separate trades.
