NFT: Best Hot Dog in the Tri State Area

Ron Hussler : 2/8/2020 7:57 pm
Considering I'm from CT, I'm pretty much speaking about Connecticut Restaurants

Windmill used to have the best dogs, this was when they sold Miller Hot Dogs. They sell Hummell, which is still an awesome dog, though not the same as a Miller. Chili is so so, dogs with the works are fabulous

Merrit Canteen: Everyone makes such a big deal about their Chili, I think it's vastly over rated..Too spicy for me.. Dogs are decent though

Duchess: IMO, the best Chili by a mile. Perfect spice/bacon bits (not strips)on top. People will probably laugh at Duchess, however, everything they do is good.

IMHO, Duchess wins..They make great burgers, even good mik shakes..Probably one of the most under rated greasy spoons around

Thanks for listening

Related to Schaller and Weber's Sausages in Yorkville I presume? Have tried a wide range of sausages from them: Bratwurst, Knockwurst, Andouille, Smoked sausage, Braunschweiger, Weisswurst, Chorizo... All have been very, very good but still "commercial" and not comparable to good home made sausages I've had from a Spanish friend and a French butcher in a small village near Lyon or have made myself. The Andouille from the Spaniard, heavily laced with ground cloves and fresh garlic chunks, and the Andouillette from the Lyonnaise shop with nutmeg, cream, bread crumbs, tripe hunks, veal, pork and pork fat and shallots...

Or better yet, make them on your grill at home. Iíve lived in numerous states and have these shipped to me from Rochester, NY every year for myself and new friends to try. They are all amazed. Red Hots btw, never was a fan of their White hots.

Don't give up on whites, neighbors in SC love them when served. There are several Rochester based Abbott's Ice Cream franchises opening in NW South Carolina (near Clemson) that carry Zweigles!
(The shipping costs are pretty high otherwise.)

Thanks for the heads up Keowee!

At that time I was told they were natural casing deep fried in turkey grease. They seemed the same on a visit 10 years ago.
I have a (probably faux) recipe for their onion custard mustard topping; I have to make and bring it to every neighborhood picnic in South Carolina!

Thumanís. Still. And Ruttís has been there since the 40ís. Took my sons there for some last month. I could eat 5 of them if I let myself.

This is another vote for Tommy's Hot Dogs in Carteret,N.J.. I grew up on Tommy's,when all he had was a small cart & yet lines would wrap around the block (So this is a business in operation for close to 60 years). Tommy passed recently but his family now runs the business as a store front from their house.Still the best I've ever had!
If you are looking for the best
section125 : 2/9/2020 8:40 am : link
Hot Dog it should be as a stand alone dog, not a chili dog. Best chili dog should a separate topic. By stand alone I'm allowing typical mustard/relish/onion toppings. Once you add chili it is a whole other entity. Sort of akin to having gin and tonic using Tanqueray or Bombay Sapphire or vodka and tonic using Tito's or Grey Goose. The chili overwhelms the hot dog.
IMHO

Ate a couple of those almost 50 years ago, once and only time, with "everything" on it.

Kept tasting it every burp work a couple of days afterwards.

Not my favorite experience, but clearly memorable!

Yeah, but hot dogs aren't steak - even if you paid 5x as much you're only out a few bucks, but you'll get a much better dog.

The question is - do dogs deserve to be categorized based on preparation? Some hot dogs I can only eat grilled (Nathans), while others IMO are meant to be served dirty water style (steamed, like Sabrett). Some of them desperately need toppings, while others can pull it off on their own.

then Millburn, now gone. There's a small deli in Springfield, Apple Deli, that grills the Syd's dog. Purveyor is Best's. But Katz's, Lower East Side, NYC, still makes the best frank I've ever had. No chili or silly stuff.

Iíve been to Rutts and no offense but I was blown away by how flavorless it was, why the hype? Walters in Mamaroneck is my favorite, they make their own dogs and homemade mustard / relish. They filet the dog down the middle and grill the bun. Simple and incredibly delicious. Tomlinsonís near Bridgeport is another classic.

Natural casing makes a huge difference for me. Still remember where I was when I had my first one - a beautiful summer day on the beach in Fairfield.
Don't have a specific place
giantsfan227B : 2/10/2020 12:11 pm : link
But 2 sets of hot dogs I love to get are:

Deutschmacher Frankfurters Natural Casing. My relatives in New England turned me on to these. Awesome on the grill. I don't see them a lot in NY.

There is a place near me that makes their own (and have awesome Bratwurst as well) Old school German Deli and meat store. Forest Pork in Huntington. Great at tailgates.
