Considering I'm from CT, I'm pretty much speaking about Connecticut Restaurants
Windmill used to have the best dogs, this was when they sold Miller Hot Dogs. They sell Hummell, which is still an awesome dog, though not the same as a Miller. Chili is so so, dogs with the works are fabulous
Merrit Canteen: Everyone makes such a big deal about their Chili, I think it's vastly over rated..Too spicy for me.. Dogs are decent though
Duchess: IMO, the best Chili by a mile. Perfect spice/bacon bits (not strips)on top. People will probably laugh at Duchess, however, everything they do is good.
IMHO, Duchess wins..They make great burgers, even good mik shakes..Probably one of the most under rated greasy spoons around

regadless, where I lived in CT the hot dog spot was Glenwood drive in. grilled hummel dogs, perfect snap to them.
it's still there, but I haven't been in 25 years, so can't vouch for the quality, but I'd give it a shot if you're in the new haven area and want hot dogs.
However, I must say, hot dogs are one of the few foods where I feel like I've mastered restaurant quality and I can get the same quality product to start with as restaurants can and I can cook them equally well. So, I'm never terribly impressed with them and I almost never get hot dogs out.

Nathans for a standalone dog, and if you insist on going heavy duty the deep fried Crif Dogs wrapped in Taylor Ham or bacon aren't a bad get, if you survive it.
And although this says tri-state, I have to give props to Chicago. I've had a hot dog in 48 states, and I can't remember one that would give Chicago a run for their money, those fat fucks know their hot dogs.

Don't give up on whites, neighbors in SC love them when served. There are several Rochester based Abbott's Ice Cream franchises opening in NW South Carolina (near Clemson) that carry Zweigles!

I don't grind my own hot dogs. I just cook pre-made hot dogs and they're as good as any hot dog I buy from a restaurant.
At that time I was told they were natural casing deep fried in turkey grease. They seemed the same on a visit 10 years ago.
I have a (probably faux) recipe for their onion custard mustard topping; I have to make and bring it to every neighborhood picnic in South Carolina!

Related to Schaller and Weber's Sausages in Yorkville I presume? Have tried a wide range of sausages from them: Bratwurst, Knockwurst, Andouille, Smoked sausage, Braunschweiger, Weisswurst, Chorizo... All have been very, very good but still "commercial" and not comparable to good home made sausages I've had from a Spanish friend and a French butcher in a small village near Lyon or have made myself. The Andouille from the Spaniard, heavily laced with ground cloves and fresh garlic chunks, and the Andouillette from the Lyonnaise shop with nutmeg, cream, bread crumbs, tripe hunks, veal, pork and pork fat and shallots...

Thuman’s. Still. And Rutt’s has been there since the 40’s. Took my sons there for some last month. I could eat 5 of them if I let myself.
Jackie’s Lemon Ice. Wow. Drove past that every time my mom took us to see my grandparents in N. Newark Been gone for years and years. Now it’s either Jimmy Buff’s or Dickey Dee’s for Italian Hot dogs. Had one of those too last month .

This is another vote for Tommy's Hot Dogs in Carteret,N.J.. I grew up on Tommy's,when all he had was a small cart & yet lines would wrap around the block (So this is a business in operation for close to 60 years). Tommy passed recently but his family now runs the business as a store front from their house.Still the best I've ever had!
