NFT: Best Hot Dog in the Tri State Area

Ron Hussler : 2/8/2020 7:57 pm
Considering I'm from CT, I'm pretty much speaking about Connecticut Restaurants

Windmill used to have the best dogs, this was when they sold Miller Hot Dogs. They sell Hummell, which is still an awesome dog, though not the same as a Miller. Chili is so so, dogs with the works are fabulous

Merrit Canteen: Everyone makes such a big deal about their Chili, I think it's vastly over rated..Too spicy for me.. Dogs are decent though

Duchess: IMO, the best Chili by a mile. Perfect spice/bacon bits (not strips)on top. People will probably laugh at Duchess, however, everything they do is good.

IMHO, Duchess wins..They make great burgers, even good mik shakes..Probably one of the most under rated greasy spoons around

Thanks for listening

Formerly in Patterson now in Fair Lawn. More deep fried goodness a la Rutt's Hut and Hirams/Callahans.

Ate a couple of those almost 50 years ago, once and only time, with "everything" on it.

Kept tasting it every burp work a couple of days afterwards.

Not my favorite experience, but clearly memorable!

My Mom & Dad used to go their stand on Palmer Avenue in Mamaroneck, NY way back in the 1930s! It's still standing. Great Hot Dogs! First Hot Dog I ever ate split down the middle!

Is this the only place in Westchester that splits their hot dogs? Years ago I had friends that lived in White Plains and they took me to a hot dog stand that split their dogs and cooked them on the flat top. Also had really good mustard
anyone remember Walts on St Georges ave in Rahway?

Costco.

Can't beat a $1.50 for a decent dog and a Coke.

Yeah, but hot dogs aren't steak - even if you paid 5x as much you're only out a few bucks, but you'll get a much better dog.

The question is - do dogs deserve to be categorized based on preparation? Some hot dogs I can only eat grilled (Nathans), while others IMO are meant to be served dirty water style (steamed, like Sabrett). Some of them desperately need toppings, while others can pull it off on their own.

But anywhere in Germany is heaven for this. The Munich train station of all places has food that will blow you away.

When I was in Frankfurt am Main years ago, I bought bratwurst from just about every little vendor I passed on the street, and they were all delicious. And I got a terrific sandwich in a shop in the train station.
Syd's, First in Newark,
clatterbuck : 2/9/2020 1:37 pm : link
then Millburn, now gone. There's a small deli in Springfield, Apple Deli, that grills the Syd's dog. Purveyor is Best's. But Katz's, Lower East Side, NYC, still makes the best frank I've ever had. No chili or silly stuff.

I like hot dogs as much as the next guy

But I don’t see much difference between an average hot dog and a great hot dog. Or even a bad hot dog for that matter.

JJ'S Hot dog truck in Newark on bloomfield ave. Great dogs
Great thread BTW
JerrysKids : 2/9/2020 2:34 pm : link
I’ve been to Rutts and no offense but I was blown away by how flavorless it was, why the hype? Walters in Mamaroneck is my favorite, they make their own dogs and homemade mustard / relish. They filet the dog down the middle and grill the bun. Simple and incredibly delicious. Tomlinson’s near Bridgeport is another classic.

Not sure how to upload a picture from my phone. they are fantastic.

Also my father in law agrees miller dogs actually were better than Hummel
If you are ever in Montana you have to try these
montanagiant : 2/9/2020 5:24 pm : link
They're out Washington but they sell a ton of these in Montana. On par with Zweigles IMO (Unless you have Meat hot sauce on it)

They also offer a Jalapeno/Cheddar version.

Natural casing makes a huge difference for me. Still remember where I was when I had my first one - a beautiful summer day on the beach in Fairfield.
Don't have a specific place
giantsfan227B : 2/10/2020 12:11 pm : link
But 2 sets of hot dogs I love to get are:

Deutschmacher Frankfurters Natural Casing. My relatives in New England turned me on to these. Awesome on the grill. I don't see them a lot in NY.

There is a place near me that makes their own (and have awesome Bratwurst as well) Old school German Deli and meat store. Forest Pork in Huntington. Great at tailgates.
