NFT: 92nd Academy Awards 8 PM

The past few days it seems a “foregone conclusion” that 1917 will win best picture which is quite strange to me. I liked the film but don’t think it’s worthy to win best picture over at least 4-5 of these other films. It was a great year for movies...here’s my predictions of what will win vs what should win:

Best picture: Parasite or Once Upon a Time in Hollywood should win, think 1917 will win
Best Actor: Leo should win, Phoenix will win
Best Actress: Zellweger should and will win, but Scarlett has a case
Best Supporting Actor: Pitt should and will win, but Pesci was phenomenal
Best supporting actress: Florence Pugh should win, Dern will win based on her career/all the hype
Best director: Bong Joon-Ho should win, Mendes will win as it seems 1917 is getting all the love

Have at it!

Was fantastic and she is my pick for Best Actress.

She is also double nominated for the singing in the film.
I want to see Taika Waititi on that stage
81_Great_Dane : 2/9/2020 11:52 am : link
accepting at least one award for Jojo Rabbit. Adapted Screenplay works. I would vote for ScarJo for Supporting Actress. She is the heart of that movie, she’s perfect and if she wasn’t, the picture wouldn’t work. Dern will win though.

Parasite for Best Picture. But 1917 wins by being everyone’s safe 2nd choice.

Roger Deakins for 1917 cinematography — too showy for my taste but what a goddam achievement.

Parasite for original screenplay.

The Irishman could win for VFX and nothing else

I just watch it so that I can hear celebrities...

The most compelling category this year
UConn4523 : 2/9/2020 12:10 pm : link
is best supporting actor. I’m absolutely torn between Pitt and Pesci, both have their career best performances. As long as it’s one of the two I’m happy.
Agreed on JoJo

that was such a phenomenal movie experience.

I'm not going to be able to create another 'will win' as I feel you have adequately pulled out the favorites in each category.

I'll list who I think should win from the nominee list and include an alternative that was not nominated in the category at all.

Best picture: Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (Uncut Gems)

Best Actor: Joaquin Phoenix, Joker (Adam Sandler, Uncut Gems)

Best Actress: Saoirse Ronan, Little Women (Jillian Bell, Brittany Runs a Marathon)

Best Supporting Actor: Brad Pitt, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (Christian Bale, Ford vs. Ferrari)

Best supporting actress: Margot Robbie, Bombshell (Margot Robbie, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood)

Best director: Quentin Tarantino, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (Josh Safdie & Benny Safdie, Uncut Gems)

My personal Top 5:

1. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
2. Uncut Gems
3. Parasite
4. 1917
5. Brittany Runs a Marathon
Honorable mentions (no order): Bombshell, Us, The Irishman, Jojo Rabbit, Joker.

Overall, the best movie year for me since 2007 when No Country, The Assassination of Jesse James, Before the Devil Knows Your Dead, Michael Clayton and There Will Be Blood all popped.
Need to watch many of the nominees but

It's actually been a pretty good year for movies. A ton of the Oscar nominees are very compelling. The French "Les Miserables" (not the musical, not the Victor Hugo story) is terrific. (It's about the tensions between Paris police and impoverished black Muslim immigrants, largely set in the same neighborhoods as the Hugo story) If not for Parasite I'd be pulling for that for International Film.

There are a lot of "snubs" this year because there was a lot of good work. Look at the Independent Spirit Awards -- they're an entirely different universe but also very very good.

Damn ye! Let Neptune strike ye dead Academy!
Motley Two : 2/9/2020 1:29 pm : link
HAAARK!

Hark Triton, hark! Bellow, bid our father the Sea King rise from the depths full foul in his fury! Black waves teeming with salt foam to smother this antiquated mouth with pungent slime, to choke ye, engorging your organs til’ ye turn blue and bloated with bilge and brine and can scream no more -- only when he, crowned in cockle shells with slitherin’ tentacle tail and steaming beard take up his fell be-finned arm, his coral-tine trident screeches banshee-like in the tempest and plunges right through yer gullet, bursting ye -- a bulging bladder no more, but a blasted bloody film now and nothing for the harpies and the souls of dead sailors to peck and claw and feed upon only to be lapped up and swallowed by the infinite waters of the Dread Emperor himself -- forgotten to any man, to any time, forgotten to any god or devil, forgotten even to the sea, for any stuff for part of Oscar, even any scantling of your soul is Oscar no more, but is now itself the sea!
There'll be some speechifying for sure.
81_Great_Dane : 2/9/2020 1:34 pm : link
Joaquin Phoenix will say something issue-related. He has every time he's won over the last few months.

Sometimes that speechifying is aimed more at the room, and the movie industry, than the larger world -- the whole thing a few years ago about "inclusion rider" was entertainment-industry inside baseball. I think "non-pros" (as Variety used to call them) sometimes forget that the Oscars are a platform for the industry to talk to itself, because almost everyone in the business is watching.
People can always just ignore what they say
UConn4523 : 2/9/2020 2:36 pm : link
that is an actual option, I sometimes wonder if people know that.

For me I invest a lot of time in watching movies, just like with sports. Seeing my favorite movie or actor win an acknowledgement of excellence is no different than a player I root being an all pro. I ignore most of what athletes say about their political views, so it’s no different here either.
...
ryanmkeane : 2/9/2020 2:56 pm : link
Peanut Butter Falcon was one of my favorite films of the year that didn’t get any Oscar love. Highly recommend for those that didn’t see it. Great cast (surprisingly great comeback by Shia Lebeouf) and a great original story that is in the mold of a Huck Finn type.
I absolutely loved 1917

Yeah I probably haven't seen an award show since t he early 70s but I have a couple predictions
Somebody will say something "controversial" during the show and somebody will wear something stupid or outrageous.
Hope they keep it lively I'll hear about it at work tomorrow. And I'll regret not watching when talk rolls around to whose boobs were hanging out the furthest.

As much as I enjoyed Joker, Tarantino's flick was the only one that really felt like a true classic and left me with a lasting feeling (if that makes sense). I doubt it wins a whole lot but that was my personal favorite.

So Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Rene Z playing an actress have the inside track.

I'm guessing Rene Z., Brad P and OUSTIH all win. and J. Phoenix because the Academy likes personality disorders.

I didn’t have a problem with it, he didn’t spend his whole speech on it, and he couldn’t be more right.

BTW, anyone hear Mike Leach, coach of Mississippi State last week during his presser? And his political input is fucking batshit crazy, but I don’t hear people telling him to stick to football.
Phoenix’s speech was also really odd
Anakim : 2/10/2020 9:42 am : link
But i guess that’s just who he is. I thought quoting his late brother was a nice touch. You could tell that even after all these years he’s still affected and traumatized by his death.

Zellwegger’s speech was just flat out weird. Too much amphetamines?

The counter arguments are so aggressive now. Its fine if you don't want to listen to it, but its not like everything said is some wild hot take that shouldn't make you question things a bit.

I liked a lot of what Phoenix said. Some of it over the top but his main point is something I think is important. People lose sight of the things he spoke of all the time - why shouldn't he be able to speak about that?

Probably because nobody watches a Mississippi St press conference unlike the millions that watch the Oscars.

All of this political shit becomes viral, I don't watch Mississippi St pressers either, but when you pick a side, and you have a voice, it becomes national news.

You don't understand my context, and I'm trying to understand yours. Are you saying your ok with Leach spewing his theories(putting it nicely), and not Pitt, because he has a bigger audience?
I'm pretty sure..
FatMan in Charlotte : 2/10/2020 10:07 am : link
if Leach said something after a National game or a place where people would actually hear him, there'd be the same type of reaction.

It's like you're trying to say people are applauding Leach instead of the actual explanation - people didn't hear what he said.

The fact that his comments "went viral" should tell you that he'd get the same response Pitt is getting about sticking to football.

I'm not okay with any of it. I just think it's silly to compare a college football coach's press conference to the Academy Awards where Brad Pitt, one of the most famous actors in the world, willingly ostracizes half of his fan base just to receive a round of applause from other celebrities that already agree with him.

For the record, I do not think Pitt’s comment even qualifies as lengthy political commentary. It was a throwaway line. Get thicker skin.

Yeah, there a million different reasons to watch or not watch but it was specifically stated that some don't watch because of the politics in the acceptance speeches. The Oscars are the Super Bowl for movies and Hollywood. If you like that stuff, it just seems odd to boycott over a few seconds of someone talking.

Pitt made a throw away comment before delivering a pretty gracious and nice speech that had nothing else to do with politics. people really refuse to watch the Oscars because they can't stand to listen to 30 seconds of mostly rambling political commentary that they don't agree with? What happens when someone disagrees with you in real life?

Whatever people’s reasons, last night was the lowest rated Oscars in history.

is Joaquin Phoenix a Giants Fan?

As much as a derelict shit show the Giants have mostly been since 2011, I'd think his character the Joker would be a huge Giants' fan.

Heeeheee!

So very well deserved. Don't really care about any of the other awards, TBH. Did get a kick out of some the geeks trying to political. Hollywood men and women throwing a public temper tantrum over politics (or anything, really) is always the BEST. I'll never get tired of that and NEVER want them to stop throwing those political temper tantrums. They're hilarious to observe. Don't understand why anyone who loves being entertained and loves seeing overpaid crybabies who are used to having everything they want in life not able to get their way when it comes to politics. It's glorious.

I guess you didn't see any of his award acceptance speeches for prior to the Oscars...

Re-read my post. I have no problem with these people talking politics publicly. I encourage and hope it continues strictly for the laughs they provide.

Yeah, you don't have a problem with it at all.

Why would I? It's entertaining as hell.
