NFT: Mookie Betts trade pulling back together

Saquads26 : 2/9/2020 5:53 pm
Much better deal for the Sox this time ugh

“ Deals coming together. #Dodgers in agreement with #MNTwins, pending medical review - Maeda and cash would go to MIN for Graterol and another prospect. Other elements perhaps. Meanwhile, per @JeffPassan, LAD and #RedSox in agreement on Betts and Price for Verdugo-Jeter Downs-plus.

So...Jeter to the Red Sox. :)

I hated even typing that.
From Feinsand it’s done

Source confirms Red Sox and Dodgers are in agreement on a deal that will send Mookie Betts and David Price to L.A. for Alex Verdugo, Jeter Downs and one other player, pending medical reviews. @JeffPassan 1st with the agreement.

Catching prospect Connor Wong is headed to the Boston Red Sox alongside outfielder Alex Verdugo and shortstop Jeter Downs in the trade that will send outfielder Mookie Betts, starter David Price and cash to the Los Angeles Dodgers, sources tell ESPN. Players have been notified.
So, is this a 2 team or 3 team deal

?
If it is a 2 team deal you are better off starting it over
robbieballs2003 : 2/9/2020 6:08 pm : link
As I am sure this will go multiple pages.
I hear Jeter Downs is ranked #44
5BowlsSoon : 2/9/2020 6:24 pm : link
So I guess the Red Sox didn’t get a pitcher....but a SS.

I don’t know how good Downs is, but it seems to me he could be expendable seeing the Dodgers have Seager and Lux who can play SS.

I suspect he will soon be our starting second baseman

2 teamer. Dodgers trading Maeda still to Twins for Graterol and the 67th pick in the draft. Graterol staying with Dodgers.
Two team deal
Carson53 : 2/9/2020 6:55 pm : link
Well, Sox did better with the re-worked deal, than the previous deal, that's for sure. It means the Dodgers caved a bit to get it done.
The Dodgers will send Maeda and cash to Twinkies for that
minor league pitcher with the supposed medical issues.
It's better
pjcas18 : 2/9/2020 6:56 pm : link
for the Red Sox if Graterol really is injured, but if he's not holy shit the Dodgers cleaned up even with adding Downs and Wong.

.

In the short term, what if Betts leaves as a free agent,
and they don't win the WS? Did they clean up then?

Of course if Betts leaves after one year it's worse for them.

As it stands now, they grt a full year of one of the best players in baseball, a 50% salary for 3 years of at worst a solid starting pitcher, a comp pick and the Twins #3 prospect

for:

their #4 prospect (Downs), a prospect credibly accused in a sexual assault scandal (Verdugo), their #28 prospect (Wong) and Maeda.

Even if Betts leaves, it makes them NL favorites for 2020 and doesn't empty the cupboard of prospects. Plus they have a captive audience to extend Betts.

No matter how you look at this its a great trade for the Dodgers. Yes, it was probably better a couple days ago, but if Graterol pans out, it's a wash probably.
Not a great deal for the Dodgers at all
Saquads26 : 2/9/2020 7:25 pm : link
Just like the last they made with the Sox when they bailed them out. I’m willing to bet the Sox win it all again before the Dodgers do.
This is nothing like the

A-gone/Crawford/Beckett trade, the only similarity is the teams and comparisons aren't just lazy they make the people comparing them look foolish.

Mookie Betts is top 5 best player in baseball.

Half of Price's salary is paid by the Red Sox. So the Dodgers pay $16M per year the next three years for Price which isn't terrible for a 3.62 FIP pitcher.

then the Dodgers get back Graterol who is roughly similar in prospect status to Downs plus Wong.

It basically cost the Dodgers Verdugo for Betts and Price (at half Price's salary).

You forgot Adrian Gonzalez, basically the Sox got rid of two 100 mill. contracts at the time.
Of course, the Dodgers just had a new ownership group take over, and were trying to make a splash...
They threw the Sox a life boat preserver back then, I was pissed as a Yanks fan.
Missed the A-gone

After reading up on Gaterol, I agree with you pj, Dodgers seem to have a better deal because, health permitting, Gaterol looks to at least be a solid bullpen guy, so that seems to me to add another possible very good player.

I hear the Dodgers subsequently withdrew from the Angels trade since the Red Sox trade was not as originally intended. So Joc Pederson and Stripling are still Dodgers for now. They don’t need Stripling but Joc can still hit. The guy they were getting from angels was a nobody.
Law chimes in
Saquads26 : 2/9/2020 10:53 pm : link
“ Jeter Downs is a top-100 prospect whom the Dodgers acquired last winter in the trade that sent Yasiel Puig and Alex Wood to the Reds. He’s primarily played shortstop but projects as at least an above-average defender at second or third, although he’s probably just an emergency shortstop in the majors. His bat is extremely promising for a middle infielder: He led the Cal League in doubles and homers this year as a 20-year-old who was young for High A, even though he was promoted to Double A with two weeks to go in the season and even though he struggled badly to start the year. He had very good feel to hit even out of high school, but the Dodgers helped him make adjustments to the angle of his swing so he could drive certain pitches and unlock more power. If the return were just him for a year of Betts, I’d still say it was a good deal for Boston, as it seems very, very likely that Downs is at least a big-league regular at a skill position for many years, with a decent chance he’s more.

Connor Wong is an unusual kind of utility player because he can catch well enough to do it on more than an emergency basis, but he can move to other positions, including second or third base, both of which he’s played a little bit so far in the minors. He’s power over hit right now, with swing-and-miss a real problem for him going back to his time at the University of Houston, but as the 26th man on a major-league roster, he could be quite valuable for his ability to back up at least three positions — and there’s no reason he couldn’t play the corner outfield spots — or even to serve as a regular catcher on a bad team.

So now Boston ends up with its new No. 1 prospect in Downs, a useful utility prospect in Wong and a solid everyday right fielder in Alex Verdugo. Verdugo, as I wrote the other day, is probably an average regular in right field now, with his ability to hit for average, plus defense in left (and the arm for right) and eventually enough power for 60-plus extra-base hits, although I think he’s more of a doubles power guy than a home-run power guy even at his peak. That might get him to about 4 WAR, which isn’t Mookie territory, but Boston has him for five more years plus the other two players. Given my skepticism about Graterol’s ability to start, given his delivery and time missed with a shoulder issue in 2019, this feels like a much better outcome for the Sox, even if losing Mookie Betts was enough to ruin their summah.”
I was hoping Betts would go to SD
RasputinPrime : 2/10/2020 1:11 am : link
but this remains a complete joke for a non-marlins franchise. They gave away Betts so they could get out of 16mm a season for 3 years?

Nothing they got can sniff what Betts gave them and every Sox fan should demand a refund on any 2020 tickets.
