was at the game yesterday and dare I say, it's a good product.
Hardly any flags...the kickoffs problem has been solved. Comeback time is awesome and makes perfect sense. Everything just made sense....I like it
Opinions & thoughts BBI?
I was at the game....no seats were sold in the upper levels. The crowd in one of the end zones was extremely rowdy. I walked over just for the experience and saw guys literally so drunk they were falling over. I saw one guy drool on another guys back...I know how that sounds, but not like that....just so freaking drunk he couldn't get his mouth to control his spit....wasn't pretty, but nobody was hurt, no fights, just very drunk and rowdy....

A "comeback period": Often NFL or college teams with the lead at the end of the game will run the ball to run out the clock. In the XFL, the clock will mostly stop after every play within the last two minutes of each half to give trailing teams a chance to catch up and win.

Sounds like an opportunity for lots of extra commercials.

Brutal.
And I think that's what people lose sight of, sports should be fun, not serious (atleast IMO). The NFL is so corporate and so serious that its easy to lose interest over a long season.
I hope the XFL has a great first season.
NFL will be using that kickoff within 2 seasons. Only issue is onside kicks.

Did you watch it? Because honestly it made the product much better. The last half quarter in football now is a about killing the clock as opposed to beating the other team with xs and os. The NFL should really take some notes because it seems like every rule change plus the full transparency were direct shots at what the NFL is struggling with.
Also the quality of play is much higher week 1 than the NFL week 1, mostly because these guys have been playing football. The NFL really needs to take a look at what it can do in July and August to remedy their slow starts.
Hearing some of the calls to the QB and WRs by the OC/DC was interesting but might get tiring after a while. They might consider selectively using that featrure AFTER an interesting play.
Personally, I am not a fan of the immediate on the field interviews of breathless players, especially after negative plays "How do you feel after missing the game tying FG?" Ol' timers will remember the parodies of Howard Cosell interviewing boxers immediately after they lost a fight. ;)
I loved the kickoff, I think the NFL needs to adopt it.
For a first week the play was pretty good imo. They probably don't have some of the practice restraints the NFL has. No preseason so hopefully the play continues to get better.
Maybe the league can provide some OL to the NFL as that would seem the most realistic position it can benefit.
If it does survive I am very curious how this may impact college football. Maybe elite high school kids go to this league to get paid or it forces the NCAA to start paying college kids.
Vince wouldn't have tried this again if he didn't think there was a good chance it would succeed. I think they're definitely onto something, and as long as it is financially feasible (not losing millions of dollars), I think this league has a good chance to survive this time around.
I am not a fan of Pro Wrestling in any fashion....well, at least not since I was in High School in the 70's. But one thing that I will say about McMahon is that I dont believe he is a stupid man. He already took a shot at this XFL thing once 20 years ago, and it was pretty much a disaster. My guess is that, him not being a stupid man, he probably learned a few lessons from that venture and wont make the same mistake twice. And with that, I think that if he applies those lessons, and at first glance it appears that he has, this league will have a shot at making it.
To be fair, Vince McMahon is the owner but Oliver Luck runs the league as the CEO/Commissioner.
4th and 15.
I was wondering the same thing. I thought we might find out if the team playing the Guardians had scored the last time they had the ball in the red zone near the end of the game, but the Guardians held and took over on downs.
I really think the announcers should have given a heads up as to what an onsides kick would look like under the XFL rules.
"If a team wishes to run an onside kick, it must indicate this to the official before the play and the two teams will be permitted to line up using traditional NFL rules (i.e. 10 yards apart from the kicking team). There will be no surprise onside kicks."
Giants fans aren't used to it. It is when your team trails and rallies in the 4th qtr. We are very knowledgeable about fall-behind time.
During the final 2 minutes of each half the clock will automatically stops after every play to give the losing team a better chance to score before the end of the half/game.
It doesn't bother me as much as the NFL legally positioning themselves as Sports Entertainment, along with Professional Wrestling, and Roller Derby.
McMahon has utilized a smarter strategy than his previous attempt. He hired 3 former NFL people, 2 NBA people and college football people to run the league. These people made some of these rule experiments. He set up an office board utilizing the methods the NFL and NBA Commish office operates in. He did not do this his first attempt and I have read no other attempted sport in America has done this, only the big 4.
I think his ultimate goal is affiliation with the NFL and to become an almost minor league system of sorts.

I think a surprise onside kick could be a lot of fun. Kick the ball about 20 yards over the head of the lined-up players then watch everyone scramble for it. Kind of like a rugby scrum.
