Can this guy just be named the starter and we figure out where to go from there with the other 2? Last night he put on yet another dazzling performance, where the only goal he allowed it looked like he slipped going side to side. I say let him start the majority of the games going forward, it's a win win, either they ride him to a potential playoff spot, or he has a few rough patches in a season that playoffs would've only been a bonus anyway. In a season that has already featured watching Fox, Chytil, Lindgren, DeAngelo take huge steps in their development, Igor has added another fun element to watching the Rangers this year, even though it does seem like they will come up short in the playoff race.
unlikely post expansion draft since Wall is a FA if he doesn't sign anywhere by 8/15 (he's a Sr/4 years post draft).
Rangers probably should trade his rights. If I'm a goalie in a system who has two 23 year old goalies at the NHL level, I'm testing free agency.

Lowell who looks to be very talented...2016 draft...he'll be in the mix, hopefully post expansion draft, and he may figure in how JD and JG are trying to play this. Big body type https://goriverhawks.com/sports/mens-ice-hockey/roster/tyler-wall/5466

So happy we took a no-named Goalie in 2018 over guys like Akil Thomas, Jack Drury, et al.

Unless developmentally they like him more than Georgiev, keep Igor and Wall and, if they can't make a deal they like for Georgiev, expose him. Good point re expiration of NYR rights
Definitely possible, but it would have to happen pre-expansion draft since Wall either needs to sign with the Rangers by 8/15 or they lose his rights and he becomes a UFA. This year 8/15 - 2020. Expansion draft is June of 2021.
Fairly obvious solution if you ask me

I would try to avoid a buyout if possible.
The Rangers have dead buyout cap hits through 2022-23
Girardi's contract is on the books for 1.1 for until 2023
Shattenkirk's buyout - 6.08 million next year and then 1.4 for the following 2 years.
I used capfriendly,
If I am reading correctly, Shattenkirk + Lundqvist buy outs, alone, would mean almost 12 million of buyout money next year.

Yep. And we all knew it at the time. It was a stupid, short-signed move. He's played really well for Tampa Bay. And Pionk has played really well for Winnipeg.
not without his approval, he has a NMC.
Aside from a final curtain call, the next time he should see the garden ice is during the retirement ceremony for his jersey.
Right. NTC means you can't trade him. NMC means you can't trade him AND you can't bury him in the minors.
Player but then was taken out for concussions protocol. Not a surprise.
Wish him best.
Shades of Harry Howell
King 1 save
Igor 24 saves
Amazing.
Great effort, Kreifs, Buchy, Fox, Strom, Lindgren and the whole team, really.
@VallysView
The truest measure of an NHL goalie is how they stop the shots that they see. Igor Shesterkin has allowed only 1 goal on 106 Clear Sighted Shots.
Man it's getting hard to imagine this team without Kreider. He is an absolute difference maker, and the type of player that they are not going to replace with a pick in the 20's of the draft. The Kreider of the past 2 months is finally the player they drafted. Maybe I'm caught up in how he's played lately, but extend him!
He does look wasted coming off the ice at the end of games. Keep this kid healthy, so much fun to watch.
Kreider: I said on this morning's thread that the chemistry right now between and among Zib and Kreider, and Buch as well, is just so, so good. If you trade Kreider, you immediately take Zib a notch or two down: yeah, they're not a playoff team, but the dynamic between them is not just this season, I don't believe.
Which leads me to a question: Has a lightbulb gone off in Kreider's head? Did he suddenly shift into FA contract mode? Is it that he's never played, at length, before with a guy with the creativity and (his own) speed like Zib? All of the above?
money. Lundqvist and Staal could both get bought out this offseason if they let Kreider go at the deadline and don’t re-up him in July. Just means we don’t buy shiny yet again this summer which we shouldn’t do regardless. This team isn’t competing for a cup next year.
If they do retain Kreider ..,, something has to give though. I would miss CK but chances are his next deal doesn’t look so great towards the end of it. Tough call. Can we bring in Wayne Simmonds cheaper/shorter? Is there anything left there?
Exciting times - id love to pick up another top talent in this years draft but its looking like we are going to likely end up picking in that 10-12 range.

As for Kreider, I say NYR has to sell high and I think they can get a very good prospect plus a 1st for CK.
One of the players I suspect the Rangers will like in the draft is winger Dylan Holloway from Wisconsin, coached by Granato. The kid has wheels, size, hockey sense, can score and full of swag. I think he goes anywhere between 8-13 in the draft, although it's still early in the process.

How are the Rangers going to trade up from 31 to get him?
because Trouba and Skjei look so much better with Shesterkin in net.
They've given up more than 3 goals 3 times in 2020.

must have been in those practice sessions and told Lindy Ruff how to coach the D.

pj, I mentioned a couple of times last week and before, I think a lot of the improved play of back line has to do with the switch of pairings, moving Trouba alongside Lindberg, d'Angelo with Staal, Fox and Skjei, much better blending of their styles of play. Shesty does't hurt (:
who did trouba play with last night? I don't follow as much as you guys, but I saw Trouba was back with Skjei after the initial change.
it's not that I don't believe adjusting partners can make a difference, of course it can. players all have different strengths and styles, my main point was just a jab at the "Lindy Ruff must go" crowd. I just always felt like most of us (me included) really doesn't know exactly what the role of the assistant coach for the D does. So he was being scapegoated. I have no love for Lindy Ruff, and I wouldn't hire him as a HC, just not sure he was to blame for the defensive woes.
I think you're right. If you're not confident in your goalie's ability to handle the puck and clear the zone, you won't be as aggressive at the blue line to break up possessions before they start. Opposing forwards, I imagine, are less likely to just dump the puck in with Shesterkin in net because he can easily get it back out. Lundqvist has never been able to do that very well, so the defensemen in front of him don't play that way.
Honestly, this goes back a ways. I can remember when Talbot and Raanta were standing out as Lundqvist's backups, and people would note that they seemed to get better defensive play in front of them than he ever did. Seems like a pattern to me.
Kadri's injury could make them consider it.
They have some good young D.
Alex Newhook would be a good target too for a F.

I wonder if the Avalanche may be so desperate as to dangle Bowen Byram for Chris Kreider

Byram would be a huge get. He was the third best prospect in the 2019 Draft behind Kakko and Hughes. Doubt the Avalanche go for it, but they are desperate...
Mostly because you don't play any defense yourself...
