24. New York Giants

“Joe who? That was certainly the question on most minds when, after firing Pat Shurmur, the Giants went with former Patriots special teams coordinator and wide receivers coach Joe Judge as their head coach, based in part on the high recommendation of a former Giants defensive coordinator: some guy named Bill Belichick. If Judge is indeed the guy, he’ll have to prove it with a roster that has holes all over it, a general manager in Dave Gettleman who is as vocal as he is impulsive and old school, an ownership group which is now perceived to have jumped the shark, and the ability to handle all this in the media capital of the world. In the end, it might make coaching punts for Belichick look pretty appealing. But Judge does have a star running back in Saquon Barkley and a quarterback with potential in Daniel Jones, which gives him a couple of good starting points. If Gettleman can do a half-decent job of buying the groceries and staying out of his own way, the Giants might actually manage their first winning record since 2016.”

Shook NFL.com: NFC East rookie grades; biggest offseason needs

“Round 1: (No. 6 overall) Daniel Jones, QB, 13 games/12 starts; (17) Dexter Lawrence, DT, 16 games/16 starts; (30) Deandre Baker, CB, 16 games/15 starts.
Round 3: (95) Oshane Ximines, DE, 16 games/2 starts.
Round 4: (108) Julian Love, CB, 15 games/5 starts.
Round 5: (143) Ryan Connelly, LB, 4 games/3 starts; (171) Darius Slayton, WR, 14 games/9 starts.
Round 6: (180) Corey Ballentine, CB, 13 games/2 starts.
Round 7: (232) George Asafo-Adjei, T, 0 games/0 starts; (245) Chris Slayton, DT, 0 games/0 starts.
Notable rookie FA signing: Kaden Smith, TE, 9 games/6 starts.

The Giants made the most of their haul from the Odell Beckham trade, which landed them, in part, the 17th overall pick, by selecting Lawrence, who had a solid rookie season. New York also might have found its franchise QB in Jones, answering a huge question for the team's foundation. Baker had a tough start but finished strong and stands to make a significant improvement in Year 2. Ximines was effective in his first season despite making just two starts, recording 4.5 sacks. Love is an exciting young player for the back end of New York's defense. Darius Slayton was an excellent find in the fifth round. Ballentine struggled with a position change to the slot, but he could improve with more time.

Free agency/combine focus: Is New York going to attempt to retain Leonard Williams, who was acquired via trade with the Jets in October and is headed for free agency? Darius Slayton, who led the team with 740 receiving yards and eight touchdown catches, was a nice find, but with second-leading receiver Golden Tate (676 yards, six TD catches) at 31 years old, more capital needs to be invested at the position in a deep draft class. The Giants also need to decide whether they're willing to pay to keep linebacker Markus Golden (10.0 sacks) and right tackle Mike Remmers, with the former serving as a pleasant revival and the latter helping bolster what was once New York's most glaring weakness. The Giants are still going to need to address linebacker one way or another and decide whether to seek additional edge help or invest in Williams.”

And added ‘it’s tough to make that decision to go for 2 or 3, when their DL had been having a really strong day against our OL’

Conversely, had the Vipers been able to score inside the RZ, decision would’ve been made easier based off how dominant their OL was in game

Colleges/Draft

Thamel Yahoo Sports: Sources: Luke Fickell will not be Michigan State's next head coach

“Michigan’s State’s inability to get to Fickell soon, the public rejections by Tucker and Saleh, and the lack of ability to move covertly has left the search flailing. Don’t be surprised if Michigan State attempts to reach back out to candidates that have turned them down, perhaps with a more attractive financial package to lure them. Michigan State has money, and the likely result will be them spending a lot of it.
Interim coach Mike Tressel becomes an increasingly more attractive option. There are other decent names that MSU could conceivably chase – former Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema, Cal’s Justin Wilcox and Kentucky’s Mark Stoops among them. But Michigan State’s clunky, public and un-focused search has backed it into a corner where anyone who takes it knows he wasn’t close to the top choice. That gives any sitting coach or coordinator tremendous financial leverage if Michigan State does call.”

Gosselin Football Maven: State Your Case: Former NYG LB Brad Van Pelt was a great player on a bad team

“Brad Van Pelt was voted to five consecutive Pro Bowls from 1976 through 1980 and was a 4-time first-team all-pro.
Brad Van Pelt looked the way the NFL wants an outside linebacker to look.

He also played the way the NFL wants an outside linebacker to play.
At 6-5, 235 pounds, Van Pelt was the game’s prototypical strongside linebacker. He had the size to take on tight ends, the bulk to shut down the run and the speed to seal the perimeter of a defense. He became the model for what the Giants and everyone else in the NFL wanted at the position – and a decade later New York found that same player (Carl Banks) with a first-round draft pick from the same school (Michigan State).

But Banks played on great teams, helping the Giants win two Super Bowls, and was voted to the 1980s NFL all-decade team. Van Pelt did not play on great teams.
During his 11 seasons in New York, Van Pelt’s Giants managed to win only 49 of their 154 games. The Giants reached the playoffs just once during the Van Pelt era, beating the Eagles in a wild-card game in 1981 and then losing to the eventual Super Bowl champion San Francisco 49ers in the NFC divisional round.
Yet Van Pelt’s performance shined for a decade. He was voted to five consecutive Pro Bowls from 1976 through 1980 and was a first-team all-pro from 1977 through 1980. The Giants even named him their 1970s Player of the Decade, and Van Pelt was inducted in the franchise’s Ring of Honor in 2011.

But the absence of a championship ring hurt him in the Hall of Fame selection process. Of the 321 Hall of Fame players, 66 percent of them won championships. There are only 39 defensive players in Canton who did not win a title. So another great defensive player has slipped through the Hall of Fame cracks without his career ever discussed or debated. Van Pelt deserved that discussion.
Van Pelt was an elite athlete. He was an all-state quarterback in high school in Michigan and all-league in both baseball and basketball. He went on to collect seven letters at Michigan State in baseball, basketball and football, earning All-America honors on the gridiron in both 1971-72 as a safety. He won the Maxwell Award as the nation’s best college football player in 1972 and also was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals that winter as a pitcher.
The Giants did not have a first-round draft pick in 1973 and Van Pelt slid into the second round over concern he might choose baseball over football. The Giants claimed him with the 40th overall pick of the draft, moved him to linebacker and he became an instant mainstay on one of the NFL’s worst teams. Unfortunately for Van Pelt, Lawrence Taylor did not arrive until 1981 and Bill Parcells did not arrive until 1983. So when the winning began in 1984 in New York, Van Pelt had already moved on to Oakland.

Van Pelt finished his career as a part-time starter on three playoff qualifiers – the Oakland Raiders of 1984-85 and the Cleveland Browns of 1986. But the Raiders lost in the wild-card round in 1984 and the divisional round in 1985. Van Pelt’s last chance for a championship evaporated when John Elway engineered “The Drive” that January in the AFC title game against the Browns. Ironically, the Giants would win their first Super Bowl that post-season.
Van Pelt wore jersey number 10 at both Michigan State and with the Giants as a reminder of his roots as high-school quarterback. He intercepted 20 passes in his NFL career, recovered 13 fumbles and recorded 24 ½ sacks.
Strongside linebackers historically don't flash the stats of the weakside pass rushers. You must watch the tape to see the completeness and efficiency of their games. The tape says Brad Van Pelt deserves discussion.”

Earl Potteiger B FA-1925 NYG 1925-1928 Born 2-11-1893 Died 4-07-1959

SABR:

“Earl Potteiger was the head coach of the New York Giants when they first won the National Football League’s championship. He grew up where a large percentage of professional football and baseball players did, in the heart of Pennsylvania. After attending Ursinus and Albright Colleges, where he played each sport plus basketball, Potteiger had professional careers in both baseball and football. As one would imagine, he was tough and aggressive, often playing through injuries that would derail most other athletes...

“The Nash Motormakers of the Chicago Midwest League hired Potteiger to manage their baseball team in 1924. Nash, an automotive producer, was another Kenosha business like Simmons that heavily supported athletic teams. On July 7 in a game versus Niesan, he argued a strike call with umpire George Johnson and was thrown out of the game. At the end of the contest, Potteiger, half dressed, emerged from the clubhouse and attacked the umpire as he left the field. The umpire sustained several blows to the face, was knocked out for over a half hour and rushed to the hospital. Fans swarmed the field to corral Potteiger and protect Johnson. Nash’s manager was arrested, fined $100 and tossed out of the league for the season. His effectiveness in the field was waning as well. In 27 games and 78 at bats, Potteiger managed only 12 hits for a meager .154 batting average.

In September, Kenosha purchased the Toledo franchise of the National Football League. Most of the financial backing came from the Nash and Simmons companies. As happenstance would have it, the main scout and recruiter for the new eleven was George Johnson, the umpire Potteiger previously knocked out. Johnson wasn’t one to carry a grudge and inked Earl to a contract for the season.   As a former ballplayer in Kenosha, he was among the fan favorites that season and was named coach as well. His active season though didn’t last long, only three games; on October 19, he broke his arm in a game versus Hammond and was out the rest of the year. He coached the club to a 0-4-1 record before it dropped out of the league.

In 1925 the 32-year-old  Potteiger joined the New York Giants football team, playing and coaching for the club through 1928. In 1925, he played in two games before breaking his arm yet again. In 1926, Potteiger replaced George Maisel as manager of Wilkes-Barre in the New York-Pennsylvania League midway through the season. He had to obtain a waiver to grant his readmission into Organized Baseball, as he still resided on the ineligible list. The team ended up in seventh place with a 56-73 record. He also played in 51 games, batting .264. That fall, he appeared in one game for the football Giants and was an assistant coach as well. Over the winter, the Giants formed a professional basketball squad, using some footballers to fill out the roster. Potteiger managed the team.

Potteiger returned to Wilkes-Barre in 1927, spurring them to a second place finish with an 80-56 record. Though the club fell six games short of the championship, it was the financial strength of the league. In a league of eight teams, Wilkes-Barre accounted for a full 27% of the attendance. In 27 games, mostly in the outfield, Potty hit .286. That year, he was named head coach of the Giants and guided them to their first NFL championship with a record of 11-1-1. He appeared in seven games as a halfback in 1928 while also coaching the squad. After a dismal 4-7-2 record, Potteiger was dismissed. Over eight seasons in the NFL, he appeared in 21 games, starting only five. For the most part, Potteiger’s professional athletic career came to an end. He did briefly manage the Pottstown entry in the Inter-State League in 1932, and in 1948 he managed a Pottstown women’s softball team that made it to the national tournament.”
