Got a $100 gift certificate to this place. There is one near me in Paramus. Any thoughts or recommendations?
Ask them if they'd consider exchanging for a $100 GC

just depends on how much you want to eat.
Don't use much of your appetite on the sides, that is just a distraction. They made their name on the steaks.

depends on whether or not you're going to order any sides or drinks. The last time I sat down with a friend at Ruth Chris, we spent about $300 on the meal with tax and tip included. We didn't exactly pound the sides or the scotch either.
We are light
Big Al : 2/11/2020 10:14 am : link
drinkers so there will be a minimal bar bill. My guess from looking at menu is low 200s so pretty cheap for a good meal with the gift certificate.
We took our son there last week for his birthday...
bw in dc : 2/11/2020 10:27 am : link
Four of us went to an RCS in Fairfax, VA. We'd have never been there, but it's in a nice location.

The bill, including tip, was basically $500+. We ordered two filets, two ribeyes, sides, drinks. And I feel like we spent $400 too much for steak that was not better than steak we have ordered at Texas Roadhouse.

Now, it could have just been a bad night. So I am not going to paint with a broad brush. But based on the money spent versus the quality of the steak, I seriously doubt we ever go back to that specific location...

Agreed on the lyonnaise - that's one of my favorite side dishes at any steakhouse, but Ruth's Chris especially.
The two chain places I have been to
Big Al : 2/11/2020 10:38 am : link
around here were at the Riverside Mall in Hackensack. Went to Morton’s once for anniversary and that was expensive. The place was not crowded but a little too pretentious for my taste. The waiter was annoying by robotically saying “good choice” after every item we ordered. The food was good but a peasant like me was not particularly comfortable there.

I prefer Houston’s which is a step down in price and always crowded. Limited menu but love their dip appetizer and the Hawaiian Steak.

By the way, I have never set foot in the Olive Garden nearby in Bergen Town Center, not go anywhere near a Red Lobster.
best bet
jestersdead : 2/11/2020 10:49 am : link
is to sit at the bar, have a couple drinks and order from the bar menu. Otherwise the $100 will put a small dent in a dinner for 2.

They also have a location in Weehawkin on the western side of the Hudson river.
I would regift the card
Boatie Warrant : 2/11/2020 12:07 pm : link

I have to say my world view is comforted today knowing that bw is no less pliant or complacent about the value of his steak dinners than he is about Jints' Central.
Went Once
giantsfan227B : 2/11/2020 12:46 pm : link
and only Once to the location in Garden City Long Island with my wife. She is not a huge steakhouse fan to begin with but I wanted to give it a try.

I ordered the strip. I remember they brought it out sizzling on a plate with tons of butter. Yes the butter made it taste great but to me if you have to drown an expensive steak in a pool of butter then I would rather go somewhere else.

And $100 might get 1 person their dinner and an appetizer and 1 drink if they are lucky.

that Houston's over at Riverside is always a madhouse. Tough to get a table!

We'll usually end up at PF Chang's or Rosa Mexicano if we eat over there. The theater there is a nice place to see a movie. Solid date night spot.

I would go their happy hour which is very good. Everything is priced much cheaper and while you can't get a steak you could get their steak sandwich is very good.

Maggiano's right next to those two have a cheap eat one take one home for simple pasta dishes which were good. Not impressed when I ordered off the main menu.

By the way, never had a problem getting seated at Houston’s. I just make reservations on line.

I prefer Ruth's Chris. The ribeye is fantastic.

My wife and I went to Morton's during restaurant week in Charlotte. $35 for a three course meal per person. I ended up getting the double-cut pork chops and they were very good, but the waitstaff was treating people like dirt for being there during the promotion. I've had nothing but top notch service at Ruth's even during Restaurant Week.

To the one in Paramus in the Bergen Towne Plaza. I had the cheapest steak on the menu an 8 oz sirloin and it was $55. A $100 gift card will only feed you, so if you are going with someone make sure to bring your debit card.

The uptown Charlotte Morton's has disappointed me more than once. Best uptown chains are Fleming's and Capital Grille IMO, top everything there. Best steak I've had uptown was at the Cellar by Duckworth's. My favorite restaurant in the city.

If you haven't tried Sullivan's, you should. In South End. I prefer Sullivan's and Ruth's Chris - the South Park location. I actually have been to Fleming's in San Diego several times, but never yet in Charlotte

Morton's Uptown I'm done with after the Restaurant Week experience. The street is all torn up around it, so getting there is a pain. Made 7:30 reservations - told us we were checked in, then they started sitting people who came in after us. when I said something, they said they had called our name several times but we didn't respond. I was literally standing next to the check-in desk the entire time!

This may sound a little anal, but I really do like to see the attitudes places take for Restaurant Week. I get that they are making less $$ per check, but most places treat it like any other meal there. Morton's doesn't. Same with Eddie V's.

I believe Peter Lugers is the best steak to enjoy. I have eaten there for almost 60 years and we often order the Porterhouse for two or three via mail order for a real treat.
many good steakhouses to try but Lugers has my vote hands down.

annoying. I'm not sure whether it's because the tabs are much lower so the collective tips drop, or if they just don't appreciate the cheaper clientele. I've seen it at Mortons and Capital Grille. That's why I try to hit Bobby Van's during RW (not sure if they still participate as it's been awhile). Their staff tends to be a lot more welcoming.

The worst is when people give an attitude over a gift certificate. I won a raffle at a school auction a few years back ('won' being a strange way of describing it since I paid multiples of my prize in raffle tickets). It was to Del Friscos, at a location that I frequent at least a few times a year. I mentioned the gift card at the start of the meal and the waiter looked like I killed his dog. I ended up spending way more than the stupid card, and it's not as if it's coming out of his end, why the hell would he care?

Aged steak the quality of Peter Luger's or better and about 2/3 the price of Ruth Chris's but still beyond my budget.

But very good quality and it's one of a pair, I believe.

Waiters CARE because you would believe how many dip fucks tip 15 or even 20% on the residue of the bill that exceeds the GC, and don't apply the tip over the whole bill!

Restaurants should have an automatic 18% of the value of the gift card factored as a tip.

They have a nice casual happy hour reasonably priced drinks and small plates.

Otherwise imo I think they are overpriced and the food is meh.

Much better food at any decent restaurant with a decent chef.

Lou - If a customer comes into the bistro, and uses a third party gift card, like a Visa, or Mastercard, they processing company builds in a percentage for the tip. An example is if a customer has a $100 Visa gift card, and their dinner check is $92 the card will read declined. We called our merchant service, and they told us that since it is a restaurant, they will only allow 80% of the card to be used, to leave a balance for the tip.
Not a fan of Ruth's Chris.
jgambrosio : 2/11/2020 10:51 pm : link
Only been because a relative used to be the head chef. Wayyyyy too much butter. Always made me feel sick even when I asked to go light.

Morton's I always seem to get gristle in my steak. Great happy hour though. Their filet sliders are tasty and a martini at $9 for one of these places is actually fairly cheap.

Capital grille however, while haven't been in a while and have gotten pricey was always the best of the three. Nothing I've ever eaten there was bad. And their generous pour event is great. They don't have happy hour like yhenother two though...

Believe me, when I was in college I worked for tips so I know how they feel, but treating a customer like a tightwad the second they walk in the door is a recipe for disaster. It's the same as waiters who have preconceived notions about which races and groups of people tip the best. Generalizing will only do you more harm than good.
