The potential Irony of the 2016 draft

Rjanyg : 2/11/2020 10:14 am
Good Morning BBI,

Just a quick thought I want to share with you.

I remember the 2016 draft and how frustrating it was to see Conklin get drafted at pick 8 and then Chicago jump ahead of us to get Floyd with the 9th pick and then have Reese pick Eli Apple. Ugh!! I was not happy. Still not happy.

Anyway, Conklin is a free agent and there are rumors that the Giants might be able to trade for Floyd with a late round pick.

How ironic it would be that 5 years later we could have both targets from that draft on the team.

How do you guys feel about the possibility and would you want this to happen?
Floyd rumor was just a guy throwing spec shit out there.

Iíd love Conklin if his knees are ok. They appear to be given that he didnít seem to have any real issues in Ď19..
That Giants draft
Dnew15 : 2/11/2020 10:19 am : link
was brutally bad.

Sterling Shepard is the only guy still in NY.
if anything
Giantsfan79 : 2/11/2020 10:21 am : link
it's a cautionary tale about getting too worked up about whatever happens this April because the truth won't be known until years later anyway.

Michael Thomas.

Man Mcadoo's wco really laced over the franchise, OBJ over Martin and Donald too.
would love to get Conklin

no thanks on Floyd
Honestly I am not super excited about either of them

Conklin is an upgrade but do we really want to pay top $$ for him? He is not a great pass protector. I would rather a guy we sign be better at pass Pro than run blocking. I'd rather go for DJ Humphries.

Floyd hasnt been great and I think I would rather use our picks and get a player in FA than trade for Floyd. He's due $13 Million and he hasn't shown that production which is why the Bears would be willing to dump him.
and yet some wonder why we don't get comp picks like NE or BAL
Eric on Li : 2/11/2020 10:46 am : link
hmm, maybe it's because all of our drafts from 2012-2017 pretty much sucked. We should have a talk to whoever was in charge of that.

They fired those guys. You should probably focus on the guys who have been doing the shitty drafting since then.

The bears picked up his 5th year option in May and that came with a $13.2M fully guaranteed paycheck for 2020. I did not watch him this season but it seems like he was underwhelming with 3 sacks while playing opposite Khalil Mack. He had 2 sacks in the season opener and then one the of the season. He played a full 16 game schedule. Lorenzo Carter had more sacks and he wasnt playing opposite the best pash rusher in the league or anything close to it.

The Bears are looking at about $12.8M in cap space heading into this off-season. They can clear some space by releasing guys like Akiem Hicks, Allen Robinson and Prince Amukamara but releasing Floyd gets them the most relief (the full $13.2M) and makes the most sense.

IMO a team would be crazy to trade ANYTHING for Floyd bc of the $13.2M cap # that comes with him.
The Titans, who seem to know OL
jcn56 : 2/11/2020 10:48 am : link
and who traded up to get Conklin, decided to pass on his option and aren't extending. Doesn't that sound an alarm bell for anyone?

Yeah, same guy who wanted to draft Mahomes...

maybe...

alarm bell = injury history

more likely the 5th year option for a pick that high isnt much worse than the franchise tag

Not necessarily. His knees were a rather big question mark after the Ď18 season. They were rightfully concerned and didnít want to commit to that 5th year option. Donít know where Tenn is right now on attempting to re-sign him, but the fact he played all 16 games in Ď19 and performed fine, MIGHT put an end to the knee(s) concern, imo

Not at all. He was still recovering from the knee and had a rough year when TENN had to make a decision on his 5th year.

People are overthinking this. Heís a young RT will all-pro upside ó and not the kind of upside where ďhe just needs a change of sceneryĒ or a ďdifferent system.Ē

Heís actually demonstrated thatís heís an all-pro player at RT. Tenn would be dumb to let him walk and the Giants would be extremely fortunate to acquire him.

Tenn's doctors know him better than anyone else at this point. I could somewhat understand declining the 5th year option on the premise that it was a lot of money for a guy recovering from injury. Since then, though, the team has made it pretty obvious that they're not interested in retaining him and are OK with going with their backup OT. For a team that makes it's money running the ball, that seems like a bad sign for Conklin's future IMO.

There's quite a bit of valid criticism for Gettleman, but his drafts have been shitty?? That's been his strength here.
This draft completely nose dived this franchise
Thunderstruck27 : 2/11/2020 1:16 pm : link
Instead of taking the stud LT that fell into our laps(that we desperately needed) we took a headcase overrated CB whose mom's twitter thumbs got more attention than his play on the field ever did.
Not only that..but if you look at every player taken after the first round, a player of the same position who has played considerably better in the NFL was taken. Just goes to show Jerry Reese had no clue.
I never wanted any part of Floyd in the draft.
Giant John : 2/11/2020 1:29 pm : link
And I was right about that. Conklin thought... that hurt.

Good post. Completely agree. I would rather try to keep Golden. I think he demonstrated that he's really hitting his stride...

^This. Don't want Floyd or Conklin.
that whole 1st round was a shit show

especially after our pick, only Tunsil was worth his draft position.

DRC was regressing and giants needed a CB, anyone criticizing Reese for the pick needs to have their head examined.

Apple was not a good selection. Especially since Reese let everyone know who we wanted. The Tunsil mask was perfect timing to prevent us from drafting him.

Guess I need my head examined. Did you watch any tape on Apple before the draft? The guy was a holding/PI machine. To draft need in a spot there and not get the best player in the draft was a bonehead move. Apple has to be in the Top 5 worst 1st round selections in club history.
