MJD, is it me or does he just have it in for Jones?

Jim in Forest Hills : 2/11/2020 10:17 am
I remember him venting for Haskins saying the Giants made a mistake and now this 'analysis'. He says that Murray was solid and Jones "flashed", but everyone flashes. I know Im a homer but methinks he's got some sort of negative agenda towards the Giants.
MJD on Daniel Jones - ( New Window )
I'm not going to lose sleep over what Maurice

Jones Drew thinks about Daniel Jones. Or anything for that matter.

...it is my opinion that the media (especially Francesca) had a bug up their arses when the Giants went against the experts with Jones at 6. I can't explain it - maybe it is "my team is being picked on" syndrome but I felt like the media was almost resentful because the Giants did not follow the script. It also seemed that way, to a lesser degree, with the Joe Judge hire.
I ignore former players opinions about positions outside their own.
guitarguybs12 : 2/11/2020 10:29 am : link
He's not a QB that played and knows the position, or a team executive, coach, or scout who has experience evaluating the position.

It's just babbling nonsense IMO.

BINGO!! the modern "journalist' thinks HE is the story, the GM , the Coach. and if the team doesn't do what HE thinks, the teamis wrong, stupid, clueless.

that I haven't heard, or you guys are overly sensitive.

His comments here are perfectly valid - he's got a subpar set of receivers, an OL that stinks, and he's going to have to learn a new system this year. He said it's going to be tough for him to find consistency because of these factors.

Does anyone believe any of that to be wrong?

train these guys to operate. If there are 2 people in the discussion, one always takes a positive and one a negative. Thats just a better storyline especially when discussing guys that are still unproven. I heard a set on the radio, I cant remember the person but he said they always had to prepare a positive and a negative argument because he never knew which side he had to be on but they could rarely have the same point of view because it was boring narrative.

Right now Jones' career path is still up in the air so they can have that positive / negative argument. Its the same when they talk about Lamar Jackson and Mahomes. You always have to have a side.

The obvious racial issue with Haskins and Jones? Not at all obvious, other than them being of a different race. It is some bizarre conspiracy theory with no basis in fact put forth by racists like Stephen A. Smith.

In reality, the sports media is vapid. If you don't do what they think you should, you are wrong, or racist, or incompetent. There is no accountability if the media is wrong. They don't own up to anything and just rant on to their newest baseless opinion on another topic
Not for nothing,

Until Jones stops fumbling, he will be rated lower.

is at a crossroads. Publications are dying out. Sports radio has consolidated. So you are left with analysts that have to get attention to promote themselves, often at the expense of integrity in their points of view.

Even putting aside guys like Skip Bayless whose entire schtick is to give the most outrageous take, you now have most talking heads going that route. They need to generate discussion, Re-Tweets, clicks or breaking posts to compete.

I don't find MJD's comments to be inflammatory - they just seem to be made without any real analysis or premise to base them on. It is like the recent Re-draft CBS did. It's basically some knucklehead spitballing shit. And it generates discussion.

things are scrutinized just a little bit more and negatively with the Giants. Kind of like Dallas, to an extent, but Dallas talent is typically overrated a bit, unlike the Giants talent, over the years. And before anyone blasts me with the usual refrain that this team sucks for 8 years now, this shit went on in the 80s and 2000s.

If Jones played for the JAguars and had this EXACT same season, and the Jags have a better team of players than the Giants, he'd be getting a lot more love from the national media. I don't give a shit what anyone says to the contrary.

But I don't trust some of these takes. Sorry, but there's clear cut agendas behind them. And the source of these same tired takes, that go out of their way to fine tooth comb every detail of DJ's rookie campaign, usually comes from the same type of person. I'll leave it at that. Use your imagination.

I don't think MJD's comments were absent any analysis, it just wasn't very deep. He offered up Alex Smith as an example of a guy who had too much change impact him negatively (granted that was 6 systems in 6 years, which MJD also points out). His comments about the roster weren't wrong either.

He didn't take a shot at Jones over his mechanics, or his turnovers, or anything else that would constitute a deeper dive into his ability. It's a basic talk show format that jumps from one high level topic to the next, they're not going to or supposed to get to that level.

This belief that the Giants are much maligned by the media is really off balance. When they were winning, you weren't reading stories like this. It's easy for people to be critical when you stink.
A lot of these people are going to dig their heels in because
Brown Recluse : 2/11/2020 2:16 pm : link
they ridiculed the Jones pick so hard during the offseason.

Jones wasn't good enough to warrant the 6th pick. Certainly wasn't as good as Haskins. And so the Giants only picked Jones over Haskins because he's white.

Imagine being one of these idiots and having to save face over a bullshit take like this.
Minshew had a better record than Jones
Greg from LI : 2/11/2020 2:28 pm : link
And his numbers were at least not worse than Jones', and were arguably better. I fail to see why it's so ridiculous to say that Minshew was the better QB last season.

as he progresses through his career.

All of the videos of them saying how horrible of a pick he was are forever. He already made so many people look like they have no clue what they are talking about and really pulled the veil up over how prospects are talked about by "the talking heads"

Todd McShay said he wouldn't draft him in the first two days of the draft. Called him a "massive reach"

He'll be actively rooted against for his whole career.

You should go and take a look at Jacksonville's defensive stats in the first half of the year vs the second half of the year. Look at Minshew's record once the defense stopped carrying that team. His offense put up more than 20 points once in the last 8 games of the season against juggernaut defenses like the Bucs, Falcons, Chargers and Raiders..

Minshew was winning 13-12 games while Jones had to put up 30 just to have a chance of winning.

Who would you rather have?

Exactly. “ We told you this guy was not a top 10 ten pick, Giants just don’t get it. “

The fact that Jones shows every indication of being the correct pick is an embarrassment to them. They have a choice, discredit his performance, or admit that the Giants were right. They re too shallow and insecure to do that
It's probably all in my head..

I know McShay took a stand on Jones and is reluctant to move.

I just feel like with MJD, its anti Giants? I don't know, Giants have been terrible so maybe he's just calling it like it is. As a Giants fan though, I think Jones has shown enough to be more than a flash. Not to mention the other announcers were all surprised at his reaction. Might be blue colored glasses.

Can you provide a quote from the linked video that gives you this impression?
Minshew also..
FatMan in Charlotte : 2/11/2020 3:13 pm : link
had more wins than Murray, a better YPA, more TD's and less INT's than Murray.

And Murray was the Offensive Rookie of the Year and I don't see anyone continuing to knock his going #1 overall.

Probably because he constantly speaks in platitudes that don't mean anything.

In this video his two examples of not being sure about DJ is that he'll be in a new system, which certainly isn't a unique thing to happen, and that he doesn't have anybody to throw the ball too which is a very bizarre thing to say. Sure you can make the case that Shepard and Engram are injury prone and we may not have the best depth behind them, but on the face it's a ridiculous thing to say that he has no weapons

He doesn't know the roster and has no idea whether DJ will have trouble with a new playbook. All he has left are his narratives.
Aside from the fumbles I was thrilled with Jones last year.
Default : 2/11/2020 3:30 pm : link
But why are so many people so defensive, or even paranoid about what members of the media have to say?
The concern should be focused at the front office putting together a team that can win more than 5 games.

So Gettleman took the white guy so it's racist?

This is such a damn microcosm of the nation today it makes me sick. Jones played a ton more games over multiple seasons with a lot less talent around him than Haskins did IN ONE SEASON with plenty around him.

But race is put up there as the reason. C'mon man!
