Ian Rapoport on Trent Williams and Washington

A potentially significant development for the #Redskins: Franchise LT Trent Williams & new coach Ron Rivera have touched base for what sounded like a positive conversation, I’m told. The next step would be for Williams to come in to visit, but the two sides are now communicating.

There is a long way to go and plenty of issues to sort out. But the 2020 #Redskins have Trent Williams in their plans, and a fresh start (without Bruce Allen) could mean Williams is open to continuing with the only organization he’s played for.
Hopefully he sits down with Ron

And tells him he wants a new start elsewhere.
Not concerning

I hope that they $pend for him.. he'll be 33 at season start, and the arrow is trending down, I am sure.
He is not playing under his current contract

He wants top $$ which is why he sat out last season. If they pay him he will play if not they will either have to trade him to a team willing to upgrade his contract or he is done with the NFL.

The upside is that he gave his body a much needed healing/rest period
why does it feel like

The reason he sat out was because of the mishandling/diagnosis of the medical staff on a growth on his head. Turns out it was cancerous, but the Washington medical staff didn't think it was serious. I'm sure he wants to be paid, but that is secondary to his main reason. He felt his physical health was put in jeopardy. Absent the dismissal of the medical staff, I don't see Williams returning.

Washington will likely have to trade him or he retires. Washington with no LT (Penn was on a 1 yr contract to fill in for Williams) and a sweaty statue at QB, they are going to have to address line protection for their franchise QB. If Washington is offered a boatload of picks to trade down, they would be able to address LT along with other roster holes.
How is this an exception to the “no contact with coaches” rule?

Is it because Rivera has GM responsibilities?

A thousand times no. He almost died from shitty medical care from the Redskins doctors.
