Ben McAdoo new Jaguars QB coach

CromartiesKid21 : 2/11/2020 7:53 pm
Good for him and good luck

Maybe he’ll get a suit that fits

For when he talks about protecting the Duke
Wow

Maybe he'll have more success. Very few people make good head coaches. (And even those guys get fired.)
Wow, he couldn't even get a coordinator job.

He's a position coach.
I wish him well

Situation probably

He was better than Shurmur

The 11 personnel got ridiculous and he'll always be known as the guy who started Geno Smith and ended Eli's streak. On the other hand, he took a very flawed team to the playoffs and was ready to move on from Eli before anyone else in the building was which, in retrospect, was accurate.
Eh. Cool. Good luck, Big Mac.

The way people retell history here, you'd think that McAdoo was the only guy in the franchise thinking about replacing Eli.

How it actually went down was that he stuck with Eli even when the losses piled on and the team disintegrated. Then when the team had no chance at the playoffs, he came up with his harebrained scheme to treat regular season games like preseason.

Both Mara and Reese had already discussed getting a look at the other quarterbacks on the roster while they eyed drafting a rookie replacement. They both messed up by signing off on McAdoo's flawed plan, but it was McAdoo's own inability to lead the team that got him fired.

The 2016 Giants was infinitely more talented than any of the rosters Shurmur had. They both sucked but McAdoo was worse.

Lots of folks were big fans of Mahomes. That's why he was a top ten pick.
Always wonder if he would have lasted

Also, the very bare minimum number of people were big fans of Mahomes to make him a top ten pick, since he was picked #10.

McAdoo could coach circles around Shurmur. The only difference in their respective legacies is that one of them fucked up in dealing with NFL royalty, and the other had the luxury of coming after the guy who had already broken the royal veneer.

He may not be HC material but he certainly did well for himself as a support coach.

And since the Giants have shown themselves well to suck with McAdoo and without, some of you should think about taking your fangs out.

Evolution not revolution!

And people need to stop with this idea that bc he liked Mahomes he is some kind of underappreciated genius.

He had a good first year. He came back in year 2 acting like an arrogant douche, and soon lost the fans, the media, and the locker room.

Hopefully he’s been reading a lot of his self help books during his time away, so he at least has some new leadership cliches to use in Jax

Yeah, except obviously the rest of the NFL doesn't see it that way since Shurmur was immediately snatched up as an OC while McAdoo latched on as a position coach after a couple of years of not being in demand.

Shurmur is a well respected and proven OC in this league. McAdoo rode the coattails of Rodgers and Coughlin's offense. And for those saying "McAdoo recognized Mahomes was good", McAdoo is also the same guy that thought Geno Smith somehow was worth starting.
Again,
an_idol_mind : 2/11/2020 10:45 pm : link
the Giants were already looking for Eli's replacement. Everybody but McAdoo knew Geno Smith wasn't it.

I hope McAdoo does well, but let's not sugarcoat how bad he was in 2017. And as bad as Shurmur was running this team, at least his offenses could crack 30 points.

He definitely was. Not even a question now that we know how it all turned out.
He’s a good offensive play caller
Tuckrule : 2/12/2020 5:04 am : link
Much better than shurmur. Eventually that is where he will be. Calling plays for some offense in the nfl that’s his ceiling. Some guys just are not head coaches sadly we hired 2 of them back to back. Hopefully Joe Judge is the real deal
Our offense was a complete joke
mattnyg05 : 2/12/2020 6:43 am : link
In 2016 and 2017. It was horrendous.
While it's nothing I can prove, my reading of the tea leaves
shyster : 2/12/2020 7:57 am : link
in the '16 HC search process was that there was a point where John Mara wanted Doug Marrone for HC, with McAdoo remaining as offensive coordinator.

Reese did not want Marrone; McAdoo wanted to be a HC somewhere; and events went from there.

The world does a few orbits and McAdoo has a job working under Marrone.
That's a good spot for him.
Section331 : 2/12/2020 8:01 am : link
He did really good work with Eli's footwork his first year here.

I disagree. For all of his faults, the offense was decent with Shurmur. McAdoo was more of a mixed bag. O was very good when he was OC, but downright terrible when he was HC.

When he was OC, he used a lot more motion and stacked WR formations than he did as HC. That leads me to believe that TC had significant input.
QB coach may be to big a role for him
PatersonPlank : 2/12/2020 9:45 am : link
Asst to the QB coach might be a better fit
He was a better game manager than Shurmur
mfsd : 2/12/2020 9:50 am : link
Situational decision making, clock management/use of timeouts, etc. he was NOT a better play caller than Shurmur

Shurmur was an uninspiring head coach, but still ran an offense that was pretty good, despite an injured Saquon, a rookie QB, and a horseshit OL.
Him and Shurmur are the same guy
Rudy5757 : 2/12/2020 10:28 am : link
they have to run their system no matter what and can't adjust to the talent. You have to play with the cards you are dealt and he and Shurmur were unable to adjust. He could be good with the right pieces.

100% correct. Shurmur's offense was leap and bounds better than McAdoo's. McAdoo ran 11 personnel 85% of the time and was very very predictable. Even opponents acknowledged this repeatedly.
McAdoo..
FatMan in Charlotte : 2/12/2020 11:14 am : link
actually ran the 11 personnel 91% of the time the final season.

I think the NFL has spoken pretty clearly on how they view Shurmur vs. McAdoo as assistants. Shurmur is highly sought after as a coordinator.

I think both were lousy HC's, so really acting as if one was demonstrably better than the other isn't really going to hold water.
I'm sure McAdoo would have maximized Mahomes' talent
DieHard : 2/12/2020 11:47 am : link
By having him throw 5-yard slants on every third and long.
McAdoo has interviewed for several jobs since being fired

We knew who in the franchise were NOT thinking about replacing Eli: 6 months after McAdoo was fired, the new GM chose to acquire players (draftees or FAs) to give Eli better protection and weapons; and 18 months after McAdoo was fired, with D.Jones already on the team, the owner publicly proclaimed "... may he never see the field this year."
You can debate whether McAdoo’was a good OC but there is no debate
Ivan15 : 2/13/2020 8:49 am : link
that he didn’t connect with his players as a HC.

That’s why he lost the team.

I hope he succeeds in Jax. He won’t be able to hide behind his play card.
