I'd like to see them play it conservatively in free agency. I would wait until 2021 to be aggressive in the off-season. Give the coaching staff a year with the team to truly get a handle on just where the roster stands. 2020 isn't the year to get into bidding wars over A-list talent. Wait until the smoke clears and then go bargain-hunting. The remaining excess cap room can be rolled over into 2021 and that's when the Giants can pounce!
As for the draft, I can't really say without knowing what the Giants draft board looks like. If the board says be aggressive, they should be aggressive; if it says be conservative, be conservative. Always do what the board tells you to do, that's my philosophy.

I agree with You Milton, although dumpster diving in free agency got Reese in trouble.

The only issue with this thinking that I think a lot of fans aren't taking into account is that there is no CBA in place for 2021. There's no guarantee that the cap rollover rules will still be in place.
A lot can happen between now and then.
Surprising? Going away from Jones would be...... Â

You can pretty much guarantee the CAP rollover will still be in place. There is no way the NFLPA let's the owners keep CAP savings, nor do I think the owners want to lose the CAP rollover.

I really don't understand this take. Here are my points. I am not one to spend foolishly but if there is an A list talent or 2 that can be a building block for us for the next few years we should go after them. We have the cap space. You build a team over time. Secondly, I don't get why 2020 isn't the year but 2021 is? We have some room this year. Spend it smartly but like I said if there is 1 or 2 A listers go for it. Who knows what 2021 brings, who will be a FA, etc. Also if you go after an A lister there will always be a bidding war whether this year, next year or 5 years from now. What I don't want is going after these so called bargains that turn out to be a waste. We have dumpster dived too often in the past with bad results.
then on draft day Washington receives a haul for their pick from Miami and Miami takes Tua, Detroit takes Herbet and the team we traded with gets Young. The Giants wind up with the 3rd OT in the draft and recoup the 3rd rounder from the LW trade because we signed him to a mega deal.
BBI is extremely excited during FA that we were able to trade back and get back the 3rd rounder and then after the 4th pick in the draft is Young and its not the Giants BBI implodes because Eric hits the servers with Erick Flowers old helmet. maybe not so surprising afterall.
so we can actually score more points to lead and win games. Secondly, select players that have solid defense fundamentals, tackling, running, and covering. Lastly, draft well and coach up instead of selecting old FAs that will not last.

My point is that you always have to overpay for an A-list free agent. There are times when it is wise in the long run to overpay a guy and times when it is foolish. It's a new coaching staff, new systems on both sides of the ball, I think it would be best to use 2020 to evaluate the roster we already have. In 2021 they will have a much better handle on what the roster has and doesn't have.
It's like the advice they give you when you buy a house. You may already have ideas for home improvement (knock down a wall, add a sunroom, finish the basement, etc.), but they say you should first live in it for a year before investing in improvements. Same with a new coaching staff taking over an old roster.
But all that being said, if there are smart, but costly moves to make that don't feel like a roll of the dice, go for it I guess. I just wouldn't be rolling the dice this year.
equal to "just missing a singular capability" to gain entrance to postseason or win it all. You see the Patriots do it all the time. They look for a diva WR or a RB to meet a "number" they have.
In our case, we are so f'd up with needs everywhere that we could spend infinitely if it was possible to fill the holes.
This coaching staff is cleaning the Augean stables, and last time I looked Hercules does not exist to clean up the shit by himself.
Name 1 long-term FA that looks like a future good piece for this rebuild? You can't. Because so far DG has been grossly incompetent in this area. Two years you can't find one freaking young player in FA?
Hopefully "the computer guys" can teach this arrogant GM something, and especially regarding positional value. I have a concern that this GM is caught up in old style football and wants to show everyone how smart he is as Resume Dave rather than listen to new ideas.
I don't even need to see them make the playoffs next year nor do I need to see a "9-7 record." But just show me that there is an understanding of positional value along with youth when you are trying to rebuild-- then I would be enthusiastically surprised.
I do NOT expect this, but that would be the most pleasant surprise I could imagine.

The Skins do need a lot of help. If they traded for a ton of picks, chances are we'd get a shot at a future "Gold Jacket" player.

End up getting Chase!
A trade down and HR in FA.....paying less for players.
I rather not get any post 30 year old players.
I'd really like that.

I'd get in the car and head for the Verrazzano if that happened.
