Sources close to the Detroit Lions have confirmed to Local 4′s Bernie Smilovitz that trade talks concerning the quarterback have been underway for a couple of weeks.
Detroit would be looking to draft a QB. With the $32M in dead cap for Stafford for this year, I just assumed that he would serve as the bridge for this year. Of course, they have the space to take the hit.
Removing the dead money from his contract makes him very attractive as it pertains to starting QB salaries. $8.3M for 2020; $20M for 2021; $23M for 2022 (all yearly cash earnings).
49ers can easily move on from Garrappolo cap wise. I'd be all over Stafford if I were them.
Heck if Garrappolo is such a good teammate he can stay and be Stafford's injury risk backup as the 49ers would plow through the NFC if they can get a veteran QB who throws a viable deep ball
No one's getting traded and Chase Young isn't coming here. Everyone's getting their hopes up. Every year, the media over values the QBs and then draft night rolls around and these guys drop like rocks.
Giants will be picking 4th and the only trade will possibly be with the Lions and Miami. Lions hold all the cards.

Im not saying its likely that Chase Young drops, that there is a flurry of trades, or anything like that. But i will say its foolish to speak in absolutes about the draft. Every year fans and media think they know how it will play out and every year there are up to half a dozen 1st round curveballs that most didnt see coming.
the NFL QB landscape is going to really change this year.
This year's QB crop (draft/FA) is forcing a lot of teams to look hard in the mirror and ask themselves, "Do we think we can win a SB with Carr/Stafford/Rivers/Tannehill/Bridgewater/Jimmy G/etc"?
If the answer is no - it's time to move on.
There's only two kinds of QBs that win Super Bowls now-a-days...1.) QBs on rookie deals AND 2.) future HOF QBs
that he is in Win Now mode, or does he gamble that a rookie QB can buy him time?Thats the key IMO.
The second I read this, McAdoo flashed into my head. Had he played the rookie, instead of Geno after sitting Eli, he might, MIGHT have, bought himself time/another year.
Stafford is a very good QB. Any contending team with a shaky starting QB will definitely take a ling hard look at him. He'd be a great fit for Arians in TB.

Any rumor of a trade of Matt Stafford is pure folly. The Lions, in the way they have structured repeated contracts, have made him untradeable. Would cost them $32M in Cap for him to NOT be there.

He may maybe very good, but he is hurt all the time.

McAdoo likely knew Davis Webb was trash as he was a forced pick by Chris Mara

The pitch to Mara was for Webb to play, not Geno.
When Eli pouted and decided to sit himself rather than start the game and let Webb play the 2nd half it opened the door for Geno. Why Webb did not play the 2nd half is a question for McAdoo as that was the request.

That's a fine theory, but one would think the answer to the key question about winning a Superbowl -with Stafford the answer should be a resounding YES!
HE just turned 32 this month, has 40,000+ career passing yards, and if his health is good and body strong should pass 60,000 career passing yards... Or at least could likely pass for that many.
He's HOF quality if he'd land somewhere with a serious supporting cast.
Lots of comeback wins and game winning drives on his CV.
is more proof that we are officially in the "silly season." As others have noted, the Lions would have a $32M cap hit by trading Stafford. There is no way they are eating that, no matter how much cap money they have. That doesn't mean they won't take a QB, although I'd still be surprised if they do. But I don't see them trading Stafford.
I think Stafford will stay in Detroit b/c no one is going to take on that deal.
If I'm the Lions front office - if I could find someone to take it - I'd eat the dead money on Stafford and start over with a rookie QB and take this year to ship off some of those aging expensive vets like Slay and Harrison - see what I can get via trades. Take all the dead money hits in one year and get it over with. That roster is injury prone - aging - and expensive.
Of course - Patricia isn't going to want to do this with his job on the chopping block...so...it looks like they'll punt this move down the road a year and start over with a new QB in the draft next year and a new head coach/GM combo.
Detroit would be looking to draft a QB. With the $32M in dead cap for Stafford for this year, I just assumed that he would serve as the bridge for this year. Of course, they have the space to take the hit.
His cap hit is $21.3m this year though. Yes that is a ton of dead cap, but it only "costs" them $~10m to move on. The chance of them having the #3 pick again is low.
Wasn't there "little to no chance" that Josh Allen was going to fall to 6 last year? Granted the Giants opted for Jones, but to echo what j_rud said, to speak in absolutes when it comes to the draft (outside of the number 1 pick maybe) is silly. You never know what can or will happen.
as a QB, he just missed the last half of the last season due to multiple fractures in his spine; that actually happened the previous season. And he also had a hip problem.
While he's not real old for a QB, a broken back and bad hip could move up his retirement clock, possibly by a lot.
If I were the Lions and liked one of the QBs coming out, I'd be picking one. Whether they can trade Stafford is a diff story.
Dude has been playing in the NFL for 11 years has ZERO playoff wins.
He's 32 yrs old coming off major a major back injury..and that team as a whole is not very good.
Stafford can sling it - don't get me wrong - but he's done nothing in his 11 yr career to make me think he's a Super Bowl winning QB.
Well you agree he can sling it.
I think you're making a call mmon error here when judging Stafford by playoff W/L. It's a team game, and he's been playing for Detroit all these years.
Lucky for Barry Sanders few people judge his career by playoff victories, eh?
There's only two kinds of QBs that win Super Bowls now-a-days...1.) QBs on rookie deals AND 2.) future HOF QBs
Nick Foles was just a couple years ago. Jimmy G was a QB for a team leading in the 4th quarter. Matt Ryan was a QB on a team leading in the 4th quarter.
When Brady comprises a good portion of the SB winners, it tends to skew opinions.

Jimmy G didn't win one - nor do I think he ever will.
Matt Ryan is a future HOF.
Nick Foles is the anomaly in the that statement - of course - Wetz (on his rookie deal) essentially got them into the playoffs, BUT you are correct - he did win it.

Jeff George could also sling it.
Stafford's career record is 69-79-1.
Of course, he has played for one of the worst franchises in league history and the teams he has played on weren't other worldly good.
I hope your not one of those DG/PS your record is the most important factor in whether or not you're good.

Wonder if his ultimate landing place is near Foxboro?

It would be incredibly counterproductive to not refute it.

Yeah, that's not far from California. They have beaches there.
If Stafford is traded, the dead cap for the Lions for 2020 would be $32 million.
As for Stafford, Patricia can try to save his job all he wants but whether Stafford or a rookie is starting they'll still stink too.
Eat the cap hit and draft a new QB.
