hard to think of a better defensive play in Giants history. Only thing close would be Seahorn pick 6 vs. the Eagles in '00 for its sheer athleticism. Like Parcells explains on the championship video, the most impressive thing was that was the end of a ridiculously long drive and Martin an older player had been on the field forever(though him and McGriff platooned)
Remembering also how nice it was to have an Offensive Line
But no one has ever thrown a more perfect ball than what Eli threw to MM..
yep agreed absolutely especially when you factor in the distance and importance of the moment. Just saying Simms did it more consistently in the 20-30 yd range.

I have a picture from a Giants calendar that I actually cut out and framed. It is a picture of taken from the Safety's perspective of OJ Anderson running over the right tackle.
Maurice Carthon is leading the way and the OL beautifully opened the lanes left and right for OJ to run through.
The picture has him just getting to the lane.
I wish the Giants of 2020 could do that on a regular basis like that late 80's team could do.
I still recall how nervous I was before and during this game. That Redskin team was really good. This was among the best regular season wins the Giants ever had.

We toyed with the Skins. I recall being up 24-7 until the waning moments when they scored a meaningless TD to make the score closer than it was
Most enjoyable season I've experienced as a Giant fan...
...start to finish, there was a lot of uncertainty - Parcells told an AB&G bartender he didn't believe the Giants were 'there yet' in training camp that season. The pre-Free Agent league had some serious hurdles for the Giants that season, schedule, but the games against the REDSKINS were the biggest match ups that season, MAJOR hype preceding them and just fantastic games. Fond memories of that Monday nighter where the crowd kept cheering for the Met World Series games they were tuned into on their radio's. Of Brad Benson shutting Dexter Manley's pie hole.
That season, they played Marino, they played Fouts, they played Plunkett, Elway, Montana.
Had to go through JOE MONTANA AND JOHN ELWAY in the playoffs.

I would argue that THAT GAME was one of the most important in the entire history of the team.
The Skins were the second best team in football that year. This was a Giants team that had not won a division title in 23 years. I was a nervous wreck that day.
Going into the playoffs, I was almost regretting beating them twice...
...in the regular season. Beating that Redskin team ONCE was an achievement... TWICE was amazing, but Three times???
Just didn't seem likely on paper.
But by that point, the 86' Giants had ended their season with 20 and 31 point wins against St. Louis and Green Bay, the Redskins were going up against the best football team in a given moment that New York had ever fielded.
The insane wind swirling, a large, revolving tornado of paper - made it seem as though the God's had taken notice. And the Giants played that way as well.
They were better than the Redskins. They were better than the Montana Niners. And there was no way they were going to be denied at the Rose Bowl.
My favorite will always be the music intro when Brent, Phyllis, Irv, and Jimmy composed the pre-game show. Mid-'70's. My second favorite is the mid-'70's intro on MNF. Gifford, Cosell, and Dandy Don. 60 seconds to air....
The Packers stunk that year, too. The Giants jumped out to a 24-0 lead, then let the Packers get back into the game in the second quarter. Parcells came into the locker room at halftime and dumped a garbage can out in the middle of the floor, telling them that since they wanted to play like garbage he was going to give them garbage.
They then outscored them 31-7 in the second half. I'm pretty sure 55 points is their highest score in my lifetime.

I watched the first half of that game at a bar at Reagan National until my flight took off. Entered the plane pissed off when it was 24-24 and when I when I arrived at my folks house found out the final score. 55 points!!!!
Terry Kinard injury. Needed the safety. Parcells later regretted it, got Phil back!
I don't think that's correct. Wasn't McConkey a training camp cut? I think they traded for him because they were having trouble finding a punt returner who could catch the ball, and also because Manuel got hurt.

Yep....Flynn was simply a depth move pickup (waiver wire?) when Kinard got hurt. Herbie Welch actually took over for TK.
The Giants learned today that Lionel Manuel, their best wide receiver, would be lost for at least several weeks with a sprained left knee. They found a replacement by trading with the Green Bay Packers for Phil McConkey, a wide receiver and punt returner the Giants cut in training camp.

What a great, great season.
They didn't play the Fish and Marino in '86. The Fish were on the schedule in '87, but that game was the only one which got cancelled (not counting the 3 strike games). The Giants played Marino and Miami in '90 at Giants Stadium and beat them 20-3.
One minute and 10 seconds of perfection leading into the game. They hit every major storyline, all of which proved critical to the game.
Washington's heralded offensive line was absolutely obliterated by LT who wrecked the game. Brad Benson and the unknowns on the Giants line nullified Dexter Manley while Simms threw 3 TDs.
People forget too what a great ball Simms threw. That pass from Eli to Manningham in the SB? Simms dropped them in there like that all the time.
I remember seeing interviews with Simms where he talked about developing his own mechanics to cut the ball through the Meadowlands wind. There was a distinct home advantage in those days from the physical conditions, before you even factor in noise.
RE: RE: Most enjoyable season I've experienced as a Giant fan...
1) Most of the games the Giants had been in that year were nail-biters. They never seemed to be able to pull away from anyone for the most part until that game. Once they got a big lead that game, they never had another close game again.
2) Boy, did the Giants have mediocre wide receivers. Bobby Johnson and Stacey Robinson?!? Can you imagine social media today after that first interception when the receiver didn't bother to contest it?
I remember it like it was yesterday. Geez who on that front 7 wasn't at least worthy of a look for the HOF?
Jim Burt and Gary Reasons, but they were also fantastic.
Despite the fact that LT was NFL MVP that season, Banks outplayed him in the playoffs. I love watching Carl Banks performance against Denver in that SuperBowl, just blowing up literally EVERYTHING they ran to his side.
Simms threw beautiful seam passes. He could really get that ball over the LBs and under safeties.
For one snap, that was it............
The call by Jim Gordon/Dick Lynch is classic!
CBS' old broadcasts were tremendous, much better than anyone's today.

Yep, the NFL Films shot at ground level of him blocking it AND returning it was classic........

NO Dante' Marino that year, you're thinking 1990.

Yup. And Flynn actually had three TDs as a Giant off of blocked punts...Bears and Skins games too.
The only game I didn't get to watch was the Seattle game and sure enough they lost that one.
My favorite season, and really its not close.

Isn't that crazy? That's only happened once in the last 35 years (and yet we also have 4 super bowl titles in the last 35 years, oddly enough).
Also, besides it happening in '81, '84, '85, and '93, its never happened to the Giants in the entire rest of the super bowl era.
2) Boy, did the Giants have mediocre wide receivers. Bobby Johnson and Stacey Robinson?!? Can you imagine social media today after that first interception when the receiver didn't bother to contest it?
Thanks for the post.
