The next 7 days will solidify some things, teams hanging on to wild card hope will fade and become sellers (Canadiens) and other teams will thrive and become buyers CBJ, PHI
There will be injuries (McDavid, Bouwemeister) that could make some teams in contention become buyers or other injuries (Weber) that enforce other teams should be sellers.
Right now the Athletic has articles of both the top players (from Custance) likely to be traded and top prospects (from Pronman) likely to be traded.
The players include Kreider (#1), Kovalchuck (where did his resurrection come from?), Hoffman, Georgiev, etc.
and prospects include Puljujarvi, Lias Andersson, Honka, Bracco (etc.)
I thought this year the deadline might be active, but the list of names seems really bereft of marquee players, so who knows.
I don't know what to expect.
Seems like a sellers market though even if NHL teams are hesitant to trade for rentals.
Hunger strike in support of the Wilpons.
I bet STL would be a destination for a D.

Acquired Marco Scandella for a 4th in January, trade him in February for a 2nd.
(to the Blues, who I had pegged as a D destination).
I wouldn't be surprised if they add another D.

With 2 games to go before the deadline it’s sound likely that the #NYR will likely scratch Jesper Fast or Chris Kreider for newly acquired Julien Gauthier. The 22 year old beast of a forward is #NHL ready.

It’s not done yet, but VGK and LA are working to try to finalize a deal that would send defenceman Alec Martinez to the Golden Knights. Most telling sign will be if Martinez is in or out of the Kings’ lineup tonight vs. WPG.

saw a clip of him getting very emotional over the idea of leaving San Jose, seemed genuine and like a good dude. Sucks i have to root against him now.
The Av's make so much sense unless the Islanders overpay.
The AVs make a lot of sense for a package. They are literally 'hurting' in goal and forward and Georgy plus one or some combination of Kreider, Fast, Strome could make for a blockbuster.

FYI this was a bogus report from a fake Devils page. Be careful of that this time of year. Don't feel bad though Fox sports1 got faked out too they had it on their scroll during the Penn St.-Illinois game that's where I saw it.

Chris Kreider is watching practice from the bench in a hoodie. A handful of veteran types aren’t skating. No Jesper Fast, either, along with Mika Zibanejad, Artemi Panarin, Pavel Buchnevich, Brady Skjei and Marc Staal.
All 3 goalies are here. #NYR

Elliotte Friedman on CHED630:
NYI, COL still interested in Kreider. BOS preferred a RW vs LW. Kreider more likely to be traded than re-signed. If WSH could move Nick Jensen maybe they would go in. STL lurking. People think Pageau wants to stay in OTT.
Over his past 15 games Blackwood has a .930 save % and over the past 9 games it’s at .949. For the season he is up to .916 sv% despite a slow start due to an injury. Blackwood’s numbers are more impressive when you consider how bad the Devils defense has been this season.
One of the main reasons the Devils season fell apart was because Ray Shero didn’t have a contingency plan in place in the event that Cory Schneider struggled. Had the Devils signed Robin Lehner it’s possible that they could have been battling for a playoff spot with Lehner and Blackwood splitting time.
With all that said I would love to see the Devils try to acquire Sorokin if the Isles have really made him available. Sorokin and Blackwood would give the Devils a great tandem to split time. The Devils have plenty of picks to get a deal done or he could be part of a package for Palmieri.
Canes lose two goalies and top 4 D, Pesce.
Rumored to be in on Bogosian (cleared waivers) and many goalies.
Seems like an intra-division match with the Rangers and also the Canadiens.

Agreed. Also very encouraging is the play of Bratt and Nico recently. They are really taking that next step. The goalie #'s For Devils goalies besides Blackwood this year are: 3-16-3 with a GAA of well above 4. Thats not bad, thats worst in the NHL bad. I've really embraced building around kids. While I like Palms and be fine signing him to another contract after next season, I'd also be ok if we got a similiar package for him as we got for Coleman especially if it includes a Foote level type prospect on defense.
Bratt's performance lately has been a big relief. If Palmieri is traded Bratt may very well find himself on the top line next season if he continues to play this well. Obviously he is better suited as a 2nd or 3rd line wing but he will be one of the Devils best forwards after all the trades.
Nolan Foote will be in the NHL next season along with Ty Smith. Also it sounds like the Devils will try hard to sign D Reilly Walsh to an ELC. The other prospects who might sign are D Kevin Bahl, C Mitchell Hoelscher, and Aarne Talvitie. 2019 2nd round pick D Nikita Okhotyuk has already signed his ELC but will likely begin his career in the AHL.
The Devils will struggle with all the youth but it will be fun watching all these young kids develop. Hopefully the Devils land some solid young FA's to add some much needed experience to the roster.
The Devils need to move Vatanen and Simmonds for whatever they can get. At this point I would be happy with a 2nd for Vatanen. Carolina might have interest in Vatanen now and perhaps they would consider Cory Schneider if the Devils eat most of his $6 million cap number this season and next.
The Devils will once again have a lot of cap room this offseason which they can use to their advantage by helping out cap strapped teams in exchange for draft picks or players like they did when they acquired Palmieri, Johansson, and Gusev.
1 of Wilde/Bellows/Sorokin (would depend on what he's asking for in negotiations)
If Zajac is willing to waive I wouldn't mind adding a pick to include him too if NJD retain some $.
Between those 2 and Greene it would be kind of funny because it would basically turn the Islanders into the Isles plus the Devils 3 captains/AC.

I was a big fan of Bode Wilde in the draft. I wanted the Devils to draft K'Andre Miller or Wilde with the 17th pick that year because I didn't expect Ty Smith to fall that far. It sucked to see both of those players end up with the Rangers and Isles.
I don't know much about Bellows but I would be happy with Wilde or Sorokin and an unprotected 2021 1st. This years first currently has more value but we know that pick will be in the mid to late 20's. Next season if the Isles suffer several injuries, the goaltending struggles, older players lose a step, etc. that pick could be much higher.
As for Zajac he will veto any trade. The Islanders and Devils reportedly had a trade agreed to a few weeks ago but he blocked the trade. He would have been a good fit for the Islanders. He isn't a dynamic offensive player but he is excellent defensively and on face-offs. For some reason he doesn't want to leave the Devils despite being 34 and on a rebuilding team.
I wish more players felt that way about being a Devil but part of me wishes he would accept a trade so that they acquire a draft pick and it would give him a shot to win the stanley cup. Zajac's experience and leadership will be useful because the Devils are a very young team that will continue to get younger.
The Devils currently have their 1st, which will likely be in the top 10 possibly even top 5 with some more lottery luck, and two conditional 1st's (Canucks and Coyotes). If both conditions are met the Devils will get both of those teams unprotected 2021 1st's. Hopefully with some luck at least one of those picks ends up in 2021 and that team struggles mightily landing the Devils a top 10 pick.

to come back to MTL? Kovy is a FA after the season. I'd welcome him back and if anything I think trading him to a contender would make him willing to return.

The Habs intend to be bidders on Kovalchuk come July 1 if he’s free and hasn’t re-signed with the Caps. They genuinely loved what he brought to the organization on and off the ice over the past two months.
