Shit NFL teams pull is so dumb. We must not reveal our most closely guarded secret!!!!!!! Assholes, either trade him or don't. And Stafford's wife needs to STFU.

If Stafford's cap hit is 32 million
gidiefor : Mod : 2/13/2020 11:13 am : link
if he's off the team and 21 million if he's on the team -- I don't see why Detroit would trade him this year -- It doesn't mean Detroit won't pick a QB in the draft -- just means the financials of cutting or trading Stafford are a little weird and unfavorable

I don't know why another team would trade anything of much value for Stafford either -- he's a good QB but can't stay on the field - which is a huge issue

It serves the Lions for there to be uncertainty about their plans at QB given their position in the draft.

This was the first year he missed games in his last 10 seasons.

That's true, but the reason(s) he missed the last half of last season are serious and potentially career shortening. Multiple fractures in his back and a bad hip are not good.
The Lions being in a tough spot because of Stafford's contract
santacruzom : 2/13/2020 12:58 pm : link
Is just another thing Terps predicted years ago that wound up being accurate.
No team is going to pay him 32 million dollars
blueblood : 2/13/2020 1:53 pm : link
to NOT be on the team.
He is a really good QB!
DonQuixote : 2/13/2020 1:57 pm : link
Why in the hell wold the lions blow the #3 pick on a QB with a guy like Stafford on the roster? Not going to happen.

I think that it is possible that you dont fully understand cap hits. The Lions would take a hit but not $32M.

That might be a first.

..and the leadership is going to trade a proven downfield thrower to draft a rookie they will start or put behind a vet backup. I need to stop listening to radio shows and podcasts that make sense because I just don't fit in.............
OverTheCap
fkap : 2/14/2020 9:44 am : link
has a discrepancy in its numbers.
It lists 7.8 mil salary, 13 mil pro-rated signing bonus, 6 mil roster, and .5 mil workout. That totals 27.3, but OTC lists 21.3 as the cap hit.

If he's cut, or traded, prior to paying the roster/workout bonus, it costs 4.7 mil more on the cap than it does to keep him on the roster (I presume the roster/wo go to the new team if traded).

On the positive side to trading/cutting is that Lions don't have to shell out 14.3 additional dollars. Doesn't matter to the fans, or the cap, but it does matter from a business perspective.

And, it may be worth it to lose 4.7 mil in cap space if it means additional draft picks/assets. Didn't the Jets eat some of Williams' cap hit to facilitate the trade (gain draft picks)?

Bottom line is that IF the motivation is there, he can be traded.
According to this article
Scyber : 2/14/2020 10:33 am : link
There is a guaranteed bonus this year, which counts as dead cap if he is cut, but if he is traded before the bonus is issued the acquiring team is responsible for it.

That would put the dead cap at $24.7m this year if traded before the bonus. That is only around $3m worse than keeping him on the roster. Not ideal, but certainly better than $32m in dead cap.
