NFT: Die Hard: it was pitched as a Christmas Movie from the start

Milton : 2/13/2020 2:12 pm
Apparently there were cameras in the room when it was first pitched to a studio exec.
Die Hard Pitch Meeting - ( New Window )
This again??

And it is not even Christmas!
Debate settled.

I love these Pitch Meeting videos

They crack me up.
there is a difference between a movie set during Christmas
Greg from LI : 2/13/2020 3:24 pm : link
and a Christmas movie. Movies such as Die Hard and The Ice Harvest are not Christmas movies despite it being the setting.

Breaking Bad Pitch Meeting - ( New Window )
Of course it's a Christmas movie; it's full of

Is White Christmas a Christmas movie?
Eli Wilson : 2/13/2020 3:57 pm : link
The movie has nothing to do with Christmas and could have happened at any point in the winter.

Point is - what makes a movie a Christmas movie?
to me
Greg from LI : 2/13/2020 5:16 pm : link
A Christmas movie has Christmas as a major theme that's part of the plot. Bad Santa, for instance, or Elf, or A Christmas Story.

If you removed all references to Christmas from Die Hard, it's exactly the same movie. The only notable difference is they'd lose the "Now I have a machine gun, ho ho ho" joke. Nothing else would change.

I mean, Lethal Weapon is also set during Christmas but no one says that one is a Christmas movie.

I mean, that is a pretty good line.
Just curious...

Well they do suggest debating it for the next three decades or something.

Fucking LOVE The Ice Harvest.

What about Bad Santa?
Nothing says fun holiday movie fare...

like a terrorist blowing a hostage’s head off. Really evokes Christmas spirit.🙄
That was pretty funny.
Pete in MD : 2/13/2020 8:04 pm : link
The part about Officer Al. "Don't worry, at the end he regains the confidence to shoot people again."
Yes, Bad Santa is a Christmas movie
Greg from LI : 2/13/2020 10:24 pm : link
It's an essential part of the plot.
The debate will continue, as there are still people who believe
mfsd : 2/13/2020 10:46 pm : link
Die Hard isn’t a Christmas movie.

Just as some people believe the Earth is flat. In some circles that debate still rages...
What difference

does it make?

Do they get some sort of prize?

Because there’s no cooler guy at your work Christmas party than the guy who can’t wait until someone asks him what his favorite Christmas movie is, like they are pulling the wool over everyone’s eyes.

Not a Christmas movie.

Nah. Incidental to the plot.

I'm just highlighting that like Diehard, other movies have Christmas themed scenes or plot lines, but that doesn't necessarily make them a "Christmas movie"
aha
Greg from LI : 2/14/2020 9:12 am : link
It's just amusing to me mainly because of the similarities between Die Hard and Lethal Weapon - two action movies that came out within a year of each other, each one featuring a wisecracking tough guy, each one set during Christmas, and yet a lot of people vehemently insist one is a Christmas movie and absolutely no one says the same thing about the other.

That’s a funny point. I hold the line on the Die Hard = Christmas movie thing simply bc it always riles people up. It is a silly debate after all

Maybe bc Die Hard actually revolves around an office Christmas party

A few years ago. How come lethal weapon is not considered one??
