A Christmas movie has Christmas as a major theme that's part of the plot. Bad Santa, for instance, or Elf, or A Christmas Story.
If you removed all references to Christmas from Die Hard, it's exactly the same movie. The only notable difference is they'd lose the "Now I have a machine gun, ho ho ho" joke. Nothing else would change.
I mean, Lethal Weapon is also set during Christmas but no one says that one is a Christmas movie.
Because there’s no cooler guy at your work Christmas party than the guy who can’t wait until someone asks him what his favorite Christmas movie is, like they are pulling the wool over everyone’s eyes.
I'm just highlighting that like Diehard, other movies have Christmas themed scenes or plot lines, but that doesn't necessarily make them a "Christmas movie"
It's just amusing to me mainly because of the similarities between Die Hard and Lethal Weapon - two action movies that came out within a year of each other, each one featuring a wisecracking tough guy, each one set during Christmas, and yet a lot of people vehemently insist one is a Christmas movie and absolutely no one says the same thing about the other.

That’s a funny point. I hold the line on the Die Hard = Christmas movie thing simply bc it always riles people up. It is a silly debate after all
Maybe bc Die Hard actually revolves around an office Christmas party
Breaking Bad Pitch Meeting - ( New Window )
Point is - what makes a movie a Christmas movie?

I mean, that is a pretty good line.
Fucking LOVE The Ice Harvest.
What about Bad Santa?
Just as some people believe the Earth is flat. In some circles that debate still rages...
Do they get some sort of prize?

Not a Christmas movie.
Set during Christmastime. Extremely not a Christmas movie.
Nah. Incidental to the plot.
