Can conditions be put on traded draft picks (as in the NBA?)

DannyBoy : 2/14/2020 8:31 am
Curious for you guys that know. How come we never see teams trade e.g. 1st round pick w/ conditions e.g. top 5 protected? We see it in the NBA as commonplace. Is it against the rules? Or?

Thx,
DannyBoy
We see conditions all the time

The Giants did it with the trade for Williams. For example, a 6th can become a 4th if player x starts X games.
Yeah

we're finally going to get that Saints 1st round pick this year from the Shockey trade.

But conditional picks are traded all the time (player makes the team, starts, etc...) never seen a "top 10 protected" pick though.
You can have conditions

but you have to actually own the pick when you make the trade. So if we owned 2 3rd round picks and one was ours and one was jacksonvilles you can make the condition that they get the lower of the 2 picks. But you cant make a trade that has comp picks taken into account because they are not official until the season is over.
Danny Boy May be asking if you can protect a pick such as — —

Giants will trade their first round pick in the 2021 draft as long as it isn’t a top 10 pick. If the 2021 first rounder is a top 10, the terms of the trade would change (such as their 2022 first rounder instead).

I don’t think I can remember a trade like that. If teams started to make deals like that, the commissioner would have to have a lot of veto power, even more than currently.

Thx for comment but I understand that. My example was more to the point- How come we don't see e.g. top 5 protected picks? I wondered if it is legal in their rule system.

Yeah, bingo. Interesting about the commissioner becoming involved.

For certain situations it would seem to allow for more trades. Perhaps due to the shorter life of NFL players, it is never done? (i.e. condition 1st round picks, like top 10 protected.)
I don’t think commissioner involvement is the problem

I just think it’s hard to structure overly complicated trades in what is usually a tight time frame (deaftday).

Also most of these guys are at X football players, not investment bankers, not exactly the most sophisticated lot.

Lastly I remember BW Posted an article that said you can actually have language that includes pics you don’t have. For example you can include in a trade “the lowest of your third round picks”

You can write it up so that a top ten pick is protected....

But you have to get the other team to agree to that and therein lies the rub. What are you willing to give up in replace of the top ten draft pick that the other team is willing to accept? If you go down that rabbit hole you'll see why it's so hard to get two teams to agree on a trade like that.
