Brooks NFL.com: Brooks: Can Taysom Hill be a true QB1?

CB
“To counter that, evaluators are placing a premium on finding decathletes with the physical tools and ball skills to compete for rebounds down the field.
"It's a matchup league," the former NFL defensive coordinator told me. "You need to have enough big bodies to handle the basketball athletes on the outside. If you can find a former (high school) wide receiver with some toughness, athleticism and ball skills to play on the island, you want to have those kinds of athletes to compete in one-on-one situations. If they can tackle and aren't afraid to mix it up, you can take those guys and make them stars."
Digging deeper into the 2020 class, Trevon Diggs fits the bill, as a former high school receiver who's made the transition to cornerback. The top-ranked prep wideout in Maryland in 2016 made a smooth transition to cornerback and his athleticism and ball skills could make him an elite player at the next level. With Cameron Dantzler (quarterback) and C.J. Henderson (running back) also having ample experience as high school offensive players, these new-school cornerbacks might be better equipped to deal with the pass catchers who are currently dominating the league.”

Dubin CBS Sports.com: 2020 NFL Free Agency: Best available free agent offensive guards, centers led by Joe Thuney, Brandon Scherff

“Joe Thuney
NE • G • 62
One of the best guards in the NFL, Thuney figures to be a high priority for the Patriots this offseason. Since being selected in the third round of the 2016 draft, Thuney has played in and started 64 of 64 possible games, emerging as the most consistently excellent player on what until last season was one of the most consistently excellent offensive lines in the league. This past season, he ranked fourth among 130 qualifying interior linemen in Pro Football Focus' pass-blocking grades, and considering the importance of passing relative to running, that makes Thuney a particularly valuable player.

Brandon Scherff
WAS • G • 75
Scherff missed five games this season, but he once again played at a high level when he was on the field, even making the Pro Bowl again after a one-year absence. Washington made him a first-round pick with the idea of moving him inside from tackle (where he played in college) to guard, just as their division rival Cowboys had done with Zack Martin the year before, and Scherff has made that look like a smart idea throughout his career. The injury issues he's dealt with the past two seasons are a concern, but he's also a considerably above-average guard about to enter the prime of his career. He should command a nice-sized contract.

Connor McGovern
DEN • G • 60
The Broncos lost Matt Paradis to the Panthers in free agency last offseason, but McGovern stepped in and acquitted himself really nicely. The team's offense struggled for much of the year due to the poor play of Joe Flacco and then Brandon Allen, but the run game was solid all year and the pass-blocking at least kept those below-average QBs pretty well-protected. McGovern's steady presence on the inside played a big role in both of those things, and he should be one of the top available centers this offseason.

Greg Van Roten
CAR • G • 73
The Panthers' season was undermined by Cam Newton's near-season-long injury absence, but the guys up front did a strong job clearing the way for Christian McCaffrey all year. While some of the offensive linemen (ahem, Daryl Williams) struggled throughout the year, Van Roten at least looked pretty good in pass protection, ranking 31st among the aforementioned group of 130 linemen in PFF's pass-blocking grades. You could certainly do worse than Van Roten when looking for interior help this offseason.

Michael Schofield
LAC • G • 75
A couple of years ago Schofield's career looked like it was on the downswing, but he has rebounded with really solid play over the past two years. He's still only 29 years old and doesn't turn 30 until the latter part of next season, so he should have several years of average or better play left under his belt. The Chargers badly need to keep any solid pieces on their offensive line so it may be tough to pry Schofield away but with Philip Rivers leaving, the team may just be undertaking a rebuild anyway and so might not want to shell out for a player who is pretty good but definitely not a star.

Stefen Wisniewski
KC • G • 61
Wisniewski stepping into the lineup in place of Andrew Wylie was a pretty big boost to the Chiefs' offense, and with both players free agents this offseason it seems likely that KC will prioritize the guy who ended the season (and the Super Bowl) as the starter. But they are under a bit of a cap crunch so if someone comes in with an offer that's just too big for the Chiefs to match, they might be able to pry him away. Teams should be careful about paying too much for Wis, though, as he has bounced around a bit and isn't always as good as he was last year.

Andrus Peat
NO • G • 75
Peat is coming off an injury-marred season where he did not look anything close to his best and yet still made the Pro Bowl despite playing in only 10 games. We have seen look far better than he did in 2019, and it wasn't all that long ago that he looked like a considerably above-average guard. The Saints always have cap concerns and might not want to lay out the money to keep him, but he's an important part of their offense and it's likely they'll approach his free agency that way. Given that he has missed nine games due to injury over the past two years, there is some risk here.

Matt Skura
BAL • C • 68
Skura was a valuable piece of one of the NFL's best offenses, holding things down inside and working as a major component of one of the more complicated run-blocking schemes in the league. He's not the best pass-protector and so could be a bit of a liability for non-Ravens teams, but in Baltimore, the offense is so much based around the run -- and the threat of the run -- that he makes for an excellent fit and carries a bit more importance than he might elsewhere.

Ronald Leary
DEN • G • 65
Leary came into the league with injury issues and only even landed in Dallas (where he began his career) due to concerns that his knee might have a degenerative condition. Those injury issues have followed him throughout his career with both the Cowboys and Broncos, but when he's on the field he is a very solid guard who excels in both the run game and pass protection. Given his advancing age, those knee issues might be even more concerning than they were when Dallas let him walk a few years ago, but on a short-term deal, he is a strong option for teams that need help inside.”

Benjamin CBS Sports.com: 2020 NFL Free Agency: Yannick Ngakoue, Jadeveon Clowney headline top available pass rushers

“Yannick Ngakoue
JAC • DE • 91
If you're going to pay any pass rusher big money this March, it should be Ngakoue. At 24, he should just be entering his prime. And you wouldn't be paying just for upside, either. The Maryland product has yet to match his Pro Bowl production from 2017 (12 sacks, six forced fumbles), but he's never had fewer than eight sacks, and his 2019 performance was strong within an otherwise poor Jaguars defense -- eight sacks, 17 quarterback hits and six pass deflections. His run defense might not be prolific, but if it's an edge presence you're looking for, you can't do much better in free agency.

VIEW PROFILE
Jadeveon Clowney
SEA • OLB • 90
Clowney's still never quite lived up to the hype that followed him out of college. That doesn't mean he's not worth a big deal. Despite logging just three sacks in 2019, the lowest mark since his four-game rookie season, he forced a career-high four fumbles and remains one of the most physically imposing run defenders at his position. He's also only 27, so there's plenty left in the tank. Even if his current trend of modest sack numbers continues, Clowney's the type of athlete who can instantly give a D-line some juice.

Arik Armstead
SF • DE • 91
For the first three years of his career, Armstead was shaping up to be a first-round bust, missing 18 games and totaling just six sacks in a part-time 3-4 hybrid role. Since then, he's completely redefined his image, emerging as one of the NFL's top-graded run defenders in 2018 and then breaking out as part of San Francisco's ferocious pass rush in 2019 with a career-best 10 sacks. Prying him away from DE mate Nick Bosa might raise concerns, but Armstead is also just 26 with freakish physical tools. Even if he doesn't eclipse double-digit sacks again, he's got the makings of a well-rounded starter.

Matt Judon
BAL • OLB • 99
All indications are that Baltimore is intent on keeping Judon around, with CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reporting the Ravens are prepared to use the franchise tag on the 28-year-old rusher if they can't strike a long-term deal. If, however, he hits the market, there's plenty to like. Judon didn't become a full-time starter until 2019, when he had a career-best 9.5 sacks and four forced fumbles, but he also boasts a bigger resume than former teammate Za'Darius Smith did upon hitting 2018 free agency, with at least seven sacks and 40 tackles in three straight seasons.

Robert Quinn
DAL • DE • 58
No one aspires to empty the bank for 30-year-old defenders in free agency, and Quinn will be 30 in May. But he might be the most underrated pass rusher available. Traded for low-round picks in two straight seasons, the former first-rounder has quietly averaged almost nine sacks per year since 2017, and his 24 QB hits in 2019 were the most among all 4-3 DEs set to hit free agency. On a two- or three-year deal, he makes a ton of sense for a contender in need of a quick fix off the edge.

Bud Dupree
PIT • OLB • 48
Like Armstead, Dupree would've easily been classified a bust if not for his recent come-on. It's not like the Kentucky product was a non-factor on Pittsburgh's front, but he'd settled into "average" rather than "great" -- until 2019, when his numbers hit personal highs in pretty much every category. You don't want to overpay for an outlier, but Dupree wasn't only better at sacking QBs at 27; he also forced four fumbles, racked up 51 pressures and made 68 tackles. As a mid-risk, high-reward target, he's solid.

Shaquil Barrett
TB • LB • 58
Speaking of outliers, Barrett trumps everyone in terms of a breakout no one saw coming. Buccaneers coach Bruce Arians has insisted Tampa will prioritize its own defensive pieces this offseason, so Barrett may never hit the market, but if he does, teams will have a boom-or-bust candidate on their hands. On one hand, the guy's relatively young (27) and is fresh off an incredible year -- 19.5 sacks, 37 (!) QB hits and six forced fumbles. On the other, he's got four total sacks in five other NFL seasons, during which he could never crack a full-time lineup. The recent flashes are worth a gamble, but how much?

Dante Fowler
LAR • DE • 56
Fowler's career trajectory has its similarities to Barrett, albeit with a bigger name. The former third overall pick never materialized with the Jaguars, starting just one game and peaking with an eight-sack sophomore campaign before being dealt to the Rams in 2018, then breaking out with a personal-best 11.5 sacks with 14 starts in 2019. At 25, with some rock-solid playoff experience now under his belt, he might command even more money than you'd think.

Markus Golden
NYG • DE • 44
The Giants defense was atrocious for much of 2019, so purging a starter from that unit wouldn't seem wise. Golden should be an exception. Once a promising up-and-comer for the Cardinals (12.5 sacks in 2016), the former second-rounder saw his Arizona future fade away following back-to-back injury-riddled seasons, but his 72 tackles and 10 sacks in 16 games for New York on a prove-it deal marked arguably the most consistent year of his career. The health history warrants concern, but he's got a high ceiling.

Shaq Lawson
BUF • DE • 90
If you're looking to mine a diamond in the rough, Lawson might be your man. As a former 16th overall pick, he's obviously already got a reputation, but his production has never exploded enough to guarantee a lucrative payday. Still, at 25, with consistent numbers and a jump in sacks (6.5) as a rotational rusher for Buffalo's shutdown "D" in 2019, he could be targeted for his untapped potential.”

“Signed as a free agent after an impressive performance in a preseason tryout camp at Fordham, Chandler proved to be a valuable addition in his rookie season. When starter Bob Hyland was injured in the season opener, Chandler stepped right in alongside rookie guards John Hicks and Tom Mullen and did a solid job. All told, he started four games during the season and appeared in all 14 as a special teams player as well. Line coach Ray Wietecha feels Chandler has top potential.
Chandler earned varsity letters in both football and wrestling at Princeton, playing offensive tackle with the Tigers. In wrestling, Karl had an imposing record, losing only two matches in three years and setting Princeton records for points scored, career.
Karl was born in Delaware County, Pennsylvania and starred at Newton High School in Newton Square, PA where he still resides. He is a fine handball and squash player, likes to sail and plans on entering the construction engineering business after his football career."

“1. Ottawa, 1950: New York Giants 27, Ottawa Rough Riders 6. The first half was played under Canadian rules before 15,000 at Lansdowne Park, with 12 men to a team, a 110 yard long field, three downs instead of four and no downfield blocking. Ottawa scored the first touchdown of the game, worth 5 points at the time. Giants’ assistant coach Allie Sherman suited up as the New York quarterback, while Tom Landry scored the only “rouge” of his career to make the game 5-1. At halftime, the Giants led 13-6 and boundaries were set down to accomodate NFL rules. Forrest Griffith scored two touchdowns in the second half to win the first of several NFL games in Canada.”

1950 season

“Forrest Griffith plays halfback the first half of the year. Jim Ostendarp takes his place the second half of the campaign. These youngsters both have their moments, but the halfback who is key to the attack is the Gene "Choo Choo" Roberts. He gains only 125 yards rushing on 45 carries the first seven games, then explodes setting a new league record. Roberts explodes for 218 yards against the Cardinals. Choo Choo does not catch as many passes as he has in the past, yet he is still a weapon when called upon. Roberts like all Giant backs is a willing and effective blocker...”

Jim Ostendarp HB UDFA-Bucknell NYG 1950-1951 Born 2-15-1923 Died 12-15-2005

Bucknell HOF:

“An honorable mention Little All-America halfback who set a single-game rushing record that stood for 28 years, James "Smokey" Ostendarp played two years with the New York Giants and was head football coach at Amherst from 1959-91. He rushed for a then-record 211 yards against NYU on Oct. 1, 1949. That total included an 88-yard TD run, which today remains the third-longest in school history. Ostendarp's 6.9 yards-per-carry average in 1949 is still the school single-season record. He is a former president of the American Football Coaches Association.”

Max Reed C FA-Frankford 1928 NYG 1928 Born 2-15-1902 Died 6-27-1973

Bucknell HOF:

“Max Reed was an outstanding offensive lineman on Bucknell football teams coached by Pete Reynolds that had a combined 22-14-2 record in 1920-23. He was also a third baseman on the baseball team. A four-year letterman and captain of the 1923 football team, Reed played both center and guard for the Bison and was one of the first Bucknell alumni to play in the National Football League. After playing with both the Frankford Yelowjackets and the New York Giants, he returned to his hometown of Lewisburg to serve as an assistant coach under Carl Snavely. Reed later assisted Snavely in the latter's highly successful tenure at both Cornell and North Carolina, and he was an assistant coach with the Washington Redskins. Snavely, who had a 42-16-8 record in seven years at Bucknell, often credited Reed with being responsible for a great deal of the success his teams enjoyed.”

I've wanted the Giants to sign Stefen Wisniewski for the last few years. I hope they bring him in to compete for the starting center job. McGovern would be my top choice but with the lack of options I think he will receive a massive deal. Wisniewski and a 3rd round pick would go along way towards fixing the interior.
